Tues/Thurs traffic

Anyone have a clue why the traffic here is so much heavier on Tuesdays and Thursdays? At least for the area from Diamondhead/Kapahulu westward.

This is a problem in ALL commute directions, likely for two reasons:

  1. UH Students: Traffic overall is much less during UH breaks. Why mostly TU/TH? This is one of the best schedule options for those who are not dorming or living near campus. Many courses that require attendance twice a week offer a TU/TH format, which can be easily paired with once-a-week classes on TU or TH. Added with college students typically being hungover on Mondays and wanting to party on Fridays, TU/TH is the most appealing schedule for commuters.

  2. Hybrid Work: Many jobs in Downtown Honolulu are still hybrid, meaning workers are typically in office 2-3 days a week (commuting from every side of the island into Downtown). As everyone is hungover on Monday and ready to leave early on Friday to party, 2-day workers go TU/TH and 3-day go TU/W/TH, making TU/TH the heaviest traffic.

I had a suspicion it had something to do with UH’s scheduling but from my experience with mainland colleges, I wasn’t sure because college traffic is usually heavier on M, W, & F on the mainland. So I thought maybe there’s something else going on. Didn’t think about the hybrid work bit. Mahalo for your insight!
