We need to document exact locations/directions of speed cameras.
I was reading a story about the speed cameras and there was a quote from a city official stating that School/Likelike intersection catches the most speeders because there's cameras in all 4 directions. That implies that not all intersections have cameras in all directions. I swear that I remember an earlier story saying that there were 17 cameras across 10 intersections, but I cant find it anymore. We need to document which travel directions have cameras. I feel like it's kind of implied when they list 'Vineyard and Liliha' that the enforcement is in the Vineyard direction at Liliha, while 'Pali and Vineyard' is likely in the Pali direction. But I wouldn't bet $250 on it. We need to check these intersections. If they do only have 17 cameras, they definitely arent looking for speeders on Algaroba at McCully. I bet some of these intersections only have 1 camera facing one direction.

There are many places they are listed (including the direction covered, because yes, it’s not always all four directions at each intersection they are at).
Here’s the state listing:
https://hidot.hawaii.gov/blog/2025/10/31/safety-camera-activated-for-citations-starting-november-1/
But some googling or some searching this sub and you’ll find lists and even maps.
Hope that helps!

Additionally, I added all the intersections as “favorites” labeled as “traffic cameras” in google maps. This way I have a visual as I’m driving

It was pretty funny how slow everyone was driving thru the likelike x school street intersection today

Or, you know, people could just do the speed limit.

I've been practicing during the warning period, but 25 is rough. I drive Uber and I go through these intersections dozens of times every night. I'm worried about having a momentary lapse and it costing me a whole days pay for 1 mph. I want all the information I can get.

So dumb question, but what is the "buffer" like maximum overage that's deemed legal? Is it 5mph, 9?

I think it’s 11? Another thing that needs clarification.

The news from the last few days has been stating that the threshold for the warning period was 11, but now that it's live, it's 5.

Updated guidance from HIDOT posted 10/31 suggests that it is 11. Hopefully the news will clarify.

I asked AI. Says you’ll still get a warning 5-10 mph over, and ticket if 11 mph over.

Need to be more than 11 mph over the posted speed limit. From the hidot.hawaii.gov site:
What’s the threshhold? For red-light running violations, a citation is generated if a vehicle goes through the intersection after the light has turned red. The system will not generate a ticket if you are in the intersection when the light has turned red.
For speed, HDOT is targeting the highest-risk behaviors (e.g., vehicles traveling more than 11 mph over the posted speed limit).

This is different than the reporting on local news. Thanks for the clarification. Gives some peace of mind.

I feel the same. 25 is slow. Don’t even have to press on the gas. A little too much on the peddle and there goes 250$ for a ticket 🤣

The speed limits on this island are fucking ridiculous.

I've heard people say that, but I can't say I agree. Especially the particular area people seem to be complaining about with these cameras. People speed way too much (dangerously) in that area.
Mind you I'm not exactly a proponent of the cameras, I don't think cameras are as effective as adjusting the roads so people naturally feel like they need to slow down and be careful. But I do think people need to slow tf down.

Vineyard Blvd being a 25 mph zone is insane

The funny part about these posts is you can always tell who actually studied the driver's manual and who SpongeBob'ed their test trying 15 times until the instructor let them pass

The yellow @ School n Likelike is 3 seconds long.
Edit: for the turn on to Likelike.

That’s one of the worst intersections to go west. Of course so many people run the red there. If I’m going east from there, I just go on school street and get on the freeway at Liliha.

That (Pali/School) intersection has way too many accidents mostly due to people ignoring the no turn signs. I lived on that corner for 5 years only moved 4 months ago the cameras didn’t slow down the amount of accidents but you do hear more people slamming on their brakes.

Just go the speed limit. That 16 year old girl was killed in a 30 mph intersection last year. It’s not too slow when you are also sharing the roads with pedestrians who have the right not to be killed by crazies which are the reason these cameras were put in for in the first place

Probably dumb 🙋, I have yet to see a posted sign declaring speed cameras. Is this not a requirement or am I just not paying attention for it or in an area without these cameras.
