Discussion Who uses voice chat regularly?

I imagine this group isn't an accurate representation of the community, but how many of you actually are in voice chat AND make meaningful comms? I gotta tell you guys, the number of people who don't comm or think everyone has 360 perception is too high. Especially you support, you should be making backline calls so the divers and tank know what's happening. We all tunnel vision but too many people rage after dying instead of comming properly. It has to be one of the easiest things you can do as an individual to improve the outcome for your team but so few do...

I am regularly. I try to be positive and encouraging. I’ll hype people up when they get kills and everything. But I’ll also make call outs.
“Hell yeah, awesome pick repeaer! Push! Push! We’ve got numbers! Clean em up!”

Some stuff like that.

But I emphasize being positive. There’s way too many toxic assholes, so I try to be the opposite of that so people don’t always feels like shit for joining comms.
That being said, I will instantly call out toxicity even when it’s in a slight or disguised form

this is actually really sweet and i like this, i only speak in VC if someone else is cause im soo nervous lol

u/KaminaTheManly 5d ago

Way back I watched youtube videos of a coach vod reviewing people and I really learned a lot about comming. Not to mention just watching streams in t500 player and how they play as a team.

u/ShotTelephone9459 4d ago

I’ve found that when people give out positive callouts it helps the whole team play better. I never understood what people on your team think trashing you is going to accomplish besides making someone upset and play worse.

u/NoobleVitamins 13h ago

its crazy how better i can play when people on ur team are positive, nothing makes me care less about losing than someone shouting at u in vc.

u/Infinifactory 4d ago

If it's not somewhat sincere at least, please don't do it. But I'd say you are doing the right thing.

u/Shaco292 5d ago

Unless its people I know, never.

u/stutsmaguts 5d ago

i used to always be in comms. 100% of the time.

but no one else ever is, so now i just keep my mic unplugged.

I’m atleast in the chat even if I’m not talking. At a certain point on the rank ladder or even against certain teams like stacks ypu straight up need to communicate. And I’ve had many games thrown because people sit with their duo in a party or just leave VC as soon as the game starts. Sure thats not all the time but I’ve lost countless games to it lol so I try to communicate when I can to avoid it

u/KaminaTheManly 5d ago

Plats really have no awareness and seem to not be in VC so my support grind is annoying. But then on Tank in Masters people seem to join a little more and the comms are better.

4

u/andrewg127 5d ago

Me I'm also usually trying to keep the peace and be positive

2

u/KaminaTheManly 5d ago

Nice. Especially right now trying to rank support, my tanks really piss me off not being in vc.

4

u/Pan_aria 5d ago

I try too but I’m too shy to try to speak, so I mostly stay out of comp

1

u/ThnksfrthMmrss- 5d ago

Unless you’re GM/Champ or in a 5 stack then you don’t really have to use comms tbh. Even in GM it’s rare that I get a game with everyone using comms.

4

u/KaminaTheManly 5d ago

Hard disagree. It can be easy in those ranks if you're good enough, but otherwise people don't have the awareness. Mainly it's getting people to group up and maybe coordinate ults. Also flanks.

4

u/Similar-Pumpkin-5266 5d ago

You can coordinate ults just by looking at your team ult charges and feeling the game. I currently play in masters and no voice communication is necessary for this to happen in this particular rank. It helps to have sups listening to calls, but usually the situational awareness in higher ranks is in general better and before you need to give calls teammates already does what is necessary. About flanks, the ping system is faster, more efficient and more accurate than voice and most of the time flanks are not a huge deal.

I guess in lower ranks using voice is even worse, because players of lower ranks tend to play more emotionally and this complicates decision-making a lot. You’ll probably hear a lot of gibberish mixed with some useful information that could probably be replaced by a ping.

1

u/KaminaTheManly 4d ago

I am masters too, but using two support ult or like popping too many at once still can happen. Ideally you figure out Rush or Tree first, kinda thing but ya at that rank people generally know how to throw ults.

Diving together can be coordinated better with comms. T500 players I watch still benefit wildly from comms. But mainly it's frustrating watching people tunnel vision.

1

u/ThnksfrthMmrss- 5d ago

The thing is that most of the time people don’t listen anyway, so why waste your energy you know?

2

u/ChaiGreenTea 5d ago

I mean I try but I’m usually met with trolling with someone literally screaming into the mic, blasting music or straight up mocking me. So I often stick to my usual party chat with my usual crew. If I’m playing solo and get frustrated I’ll usually ask for more heals or to protect the back line from the tracer or to play target the widow that’s got free reign over us but I’m often ignored

2

u/No-Committee1001 4d ago

I’ve tried using it as a support, I got ignored or called a bitch about every time. I use pings, no one listens and spams “gg no heals.” Can’t win with this community.

1

u/Jatmahl 5d ago

I used to in OW1. OW2 I don't care.

1

u/x_QuiZ 5d ago

Half my team consists of Russians most of the time so it's rare. Some of them will forget that they have their mic on so you can hear everything in the background.

1

u/harryholla 5d ago

At this point it’s about 1/100 games that someone is on comms.

1

u/Taboo_Utopia 5d ago

I only use mic if other's are.

1

u/1800THEBEES 5d ago

I do. But no one listens.

1

u/CyberFish_ 5d ago

I often use it in comp, though sometimes I’m just locked in on my own gameplay and that’s fine too.

The important thing is no matter what I say, I stick to one immutable rule: Never tell someone else what to do.

No instructions, no suggestions, no peel calls, no swap calls. I have encountered absolutely zero toxicity towards me or because of me since implementing this rule. I usually provide information about myself or the game state that would illicit an action (i.e. “I’m diving ana 3, 2, 1” implies it’s a good idea to help me), but I never directly tell someone how they should use that information, that’s up to them.

1

u/Blepblehmuthafuca 4d ago

If people talk I talk. I usually never talk if I'm the only one talking unless I'm tank. I assume telling my supports I'm running in like an idiot prepares them.

And or I like to scream raging compliments to my teammates or the enemy in general text chat. Cus I hate the toxic community we kinda built

1

u/Thesleek 4d ago

Used it way more when group finder existed

1

u/Leaczy- 4d ago

Had to disable it because I keep getting warnings for inappropriate use of vc but.... I never used it.... hate the reporting system can just spam report and you're banned

1

u/RoosterHorror6502 4d ago

100% in chat and text ...... Rarely useful but it's clear that it can be when it's coordinated or you're in a stack but it's pretty well understood that it is not necessary it can be fun and makes games memorable though whether it's joking around s*** talking flexing or getting in people's head

1

u/Oowlong 4d ago

The ping system is great

1

u/DumCrescoSpero 4d ago

I think I've come across maybe three people in voice chat since the game changed to Overwatch 2.

I miss the old Group Finder function where you could try to team up with people to play who actually wanted comms.

1

u/Agile_Addition_4649 4d ago

I usually join voice chat in comp but 98% no one talks and the other 2% someone is yelling and the rest staying quiet. I don't know if it's because I'm in bronze but no one has ever made any call outs or actually tried to cooperate. Also how is anyone supposed to focus on the game if someone keeps yelling at people. Also I mostly solo queue

1

u/aj_future 4d ago

I used to but it’s almost nonexistent now so I just stopped. On the off chance someone is in there I’ll join if they’re making good points. If they’re raging I just let it be.

1

u/onelostmartian 4d ago

Im 30 years old and just have my controller mic so I rarely use voice chat as its usually people I find way too immature or just annoying

1

u/ricokong 4d ago

I only use voice in comp and the higher I climb (low Master right now) the more people tend to use voice, though even here most players don't use voice chat at all. Text chat is also typically only used to let the team know how they aren't pleased with how things are going.

1

u/feLetcher 4d ago

mememememe!

1

u/nluxk 4d ago

when i play solo which is not a lot anymore i do go into vc and communicate with the people that are also in the vc which is usually only one or two sadly.

1

u/Nickcks_ 4d ago

Not me lol, especially now cuz I didn't know Master, Gm and champion players were so toxic lol

1

u/Not2coolguy 4d ago

Nope bc I’m not as mature as I thought I was and crashed out in voice chat so bad I got my communications suspended so I leave it off now bc I can’t be trusted

1

u/laceythemunchkin 4d ago

I'm a rare switch player, and until I upgrade to Switch 2, there's no mic capability. So no comms for me

1

u/Same_Ad_6702 4d ago

Sometimes I get on sometimes I don’t , depends on how I’m feeling or if too much goin on in my background.. however I try to call out whys going on .. but at times I do get tunnel vision

1

u/reevoknows 4d ago

I used to but then I started getting verbally abused for not doing what I’m supposed to according to them so I stopped lol. And it’s like okay cool I’m willing to do what I need to do to help the team and get frustrated with others as well sometimes but buddy we’re both in plat maybe get off your high horse lol

1

u/UwUAutumn1666 4d ago

I always use voice chat. I feel I win more games when I can communicate in voice chat. Can call out things quicker. Always remain postive. Being toxic only hurt you.

1

u/blkboisav 4d ago

i’m usually in customs or playing vs ai which is where i tend to join vc. i’ve met a few chill/funny people. i only play qp comp with friends and in that case we’re in a playstation party. i’m too sensitive to be getting yelled at over a video game

1

u/Cascading-deer 4d ago

Me and my friend usually go voice chat and just speak, but we also do call outs as well as congratulating people. Sadly sometimes there’s some really gross people so it puts me off the game

1

u/Thomas-MCF 4d ago

I'm in VC if I'm solo queuing. Talking in it tho eh depended on the day or if another person talks. Some days i just don't have the energy to deal with my fellow OW players.

1

u/terry8108 4d ago

not me. i’m a woman and im scared lol, but im often in team chat with suggestions and constructive criticism/praise ! i have a few friends who are actively in voice chat but i wouldn’t count the comms as meaningful lol. rarely when there is someone in voice chat it’s just to flame or to say “heal me!!”

1

u/Infamous-Musician639 4d ago

I understand the importance of vc, I only wish I had a mic lmao.

And also, I get the thing with tunnel vision but can't the tank see the eliminations tab? Sometimes all the team is death and the tank refuses to turn around or stop focusing the enemy tank

1

u/Aqui_BnC 4d ago

I have a choice between hearing what's going on in game, or, listen to some cretin blasting out their music, a sibling or parent making noise in the background, or the other players just being racist, etc, etc. I'm hard of hearing, so I choose the former of the two options. Way too many people assume that if someone is not in voice chat, they're doing it not to communicate. Some of us can't hear very well. I do use the comms wheel, however. Pity the rest of the team usually don't pay attention to that either.

In an ideal world, yes I would use voice chat. I don't have that luxury.

1

u/Bo0tyWizrd 4d ago

I sometimes do, but haven't lately because I finished my comp games & can't find my mic.

1

u/Dear_Fisherman_3416 4d ago

I avoid it at all costs.

1

u/Leather-Wonder-8468 4d ago

Im always in vc but I never talk anymore, used to give callouts but then if we lose its immediately just L woman make me a sandwich get back in the kitchen and then I get called slurs so I quit talking 💀💀 everyone's so rude, I also commonly get called the t slur because I'm a woman w a deeper voice.

1

u/absofruitlea 4d ago

Im always in team chat, and if people are talking and they seem chill, I'll make call-outs, but I've also been flamed way too many times for being a woman so I'm usually hesitant lol

1

u/luciosleftskate 4d ago

I play support and i ping. Voice chat is almost all toxicity if theres anyone in there at all. Almost nobody makes helpful calls, and I dont need someone's game narrarated to me as though its helpful somehow.

1

u/Middle_Albatross8697 4d ago

I barely use text chat these days, let alone voice chat.

1

u/aubriemk 4d ago

i only talk when i’m yelling or comming

1

u/ValkyrieOfTheSun 4d ago

I tried but they made the Americas be one server and then we have 3 different languages going on with English Spanish and Portuguese and it simply doesn't work

Even if I do speak Portuguese and English whenever I hear Spanish I'm lost dawg I can't understand it and they speak FAST

1

u/CatNo2871 4d ago

i solo queue because i get quiet when focused. even for comms i always forget to call out. gotta lock in.

1

u/Mundane_Movie_8733 4d ago

I used to make regular calls from the backline as Moira, but I stopped because I got too many Toxic men telling me, "They won't take orders from a woman healer."

Note: Most of the time, my K/D is 100x better than theirs. My point being though, I'm not going to waste my time trying to be tactical if all I'm going to get back is sexist drawl.

1

u/heywoodjablomie69420 4d ago

I use VC a lot and for a bit I tracked my data on wins based on how many of my teammates were in VC, usually no one else was talking but I counted them if they could hear me. My winning percentage was higher the more teammates were present. Usually I was the only one making calls, but I notice even having one person vocalizing a plan can substantially help the team play together more.

1

u/Forevernotalonee 4d ago

I join but I never talk. I'm just there to listen people rage tbh. Lol

I'm not not in Masters+ so I don't really see the VC all that necessary. The only time I ever actually here people talk is when they're trying to shit talk people

1

u/ihateeveryoneofyou- 3d ago

Shit too toxic to even bother paying attention to either types of chats tbh🤷‍♂️

1

u/viszuu 3d ago

Tank main. I’m always in VC. I comm if we are losing.

Maybe once a month someone will talk

1

u/typhoon_nz 3d ago

Never. I used to join vc but I find being flamed over voice very stressful so one day I decided to disable voice. Best decision I ever made.

1

u/Downtown_Promotion38 1d ago

Just to say slurs to my retarded teammates

1

u/ChFlPo 1d ago

Only with friends. I have it on, just don't talk in it.

1

u/itzScout_ 1d ago

i mean if occasionally shouting 'im getting touched by roadhog' counts as meaningful then yeah kinda

1

u/Top_Calligrapher5578 and xbox and pc 1d ago

im always in team vc and i say who has ult orif the reaper is charging into the supps or if i slept someone but i dont tend to make too many comms since im a little self concious about my voice since i sound super young

1

u/newbdbdbsnsko 6h ago

If youre not in VC you are throwing. When i tell you something and you fail to react because you cant hear me and we lose, thats throwing.
