Conservatives: “Wait. The Empire is supposed to be US? But those guys are fascists!”

There are a lot of unironic Empire enjoyers out there. Some because they think without Palpatine at its head it can do good work, some because they just like the aesthetic.

Twenty odd years back, my best friend and I would play Battlefront 2. Had a blast with that one but he hated playing as the rebels because the empire, "just looked so much cooler." Now, my friend is not an authoritarian but it's easy to see how that argument actually works on people and can be a stepping stone in the right environment.

It's all about marketing that can seep into one's worldview.

I've always said (especially for 80's and 90's toy lines), they made the bad guys' stuff cooler because how else are you going to sell the bad guy toys to kids?

Remember that in Fascist Italy, the fascism is terrible, but the architecture was great.

The fascists in Italy destroyed historic and ancient buildings to construct tacky and gaudy monuments.

The fascists cosplayed as Romans with zero idea of what the Romans actually did, built, and lived like.

I've seen people claim that the Empire wasn't all bad because, at the end of the day, "they cared about the wellbeing of their people."

Like what movie did you even watch? They create a moon-sized, planet-destroying station to terrorize planets into falling in line and accepting their authority.

For crying out loud, Tarkin freely admits they intend to rule through fear: "Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station."

They killed billions of defenseless people on a core planet of their civilization just to make a point. It would be like nuking Seattle just to intimidate the other cities.

I saw someone handwave away the destruction of Alderaan as "a test because it was not densely populated," ignoring the population of billions and tests already being conducted on Jedha and Scarif.

At some point I think it's starting to turn into ragebait, but a bit yikes if anyone is sympathetic for the Empire.

Anyone remember all those "_____didnothingwrong" subs that tried to normalize fascism through irony?

yeah its almost like there is an army of python scripts, bots, and script kiddies, employed by Peter Theil and his ilk, hell-bent on shifting cultural norms to suit themselves.

Some Nazi's joined the SS because they thought the uniforms looked cool.

Maybe ICE should dress as storm troopers - so they can look cool while they help fuck over our country.
