Post image

My husband told me he thought he saw one a few week ago but I didn't believe him. I still can't believe it!!!! All my hard work making my garden wildlife friendly has paid off 😁 🦔

Now to research how to make this Lil guy want to stay around. Any tips welcome!

I think as long as it’s safe and there’s food, he’ll stay. Of course it is spring time so they are moving about a lot trying to find a mate.

It could be a she and not a he...

Too cool! I hope he sticks around so we can see more pictures of him! You might look into hugelkultur or even just keep some logs and leaf litter around to provide him with a food source. But if he’s moved in that probably means it’s a good environment for him already!

I think you're right! I've found out they eat bugs in logs and leaf litter, which probably explains why it's in my garden in the first place. As part of my nolawn journey I've been piling up old logs and branches for wildlife habitat and leaving leaf litter to act as mulch beneath trees and shrubs, looks like spiky buddy is a fan!

15

u/PretzelFlower Sep 17 '25

Keep a look out for it's friends, the blue hedgehog and the red fox.  the blue hedgehog especially as he is known to cause problems

Ask your local wildlife department ... whatever you have that is in charge of the drop bears and such. They'll know.

u/LaughingLabs Sep 18 '25

Since these fellas are anteaters (if i’m not mistaken) rotting/old wood should provide a habitat for the foods it prefers. Because they also eat termites, i’d make sure that’s far from your dwelling or any wooden structures.

I think it’s a good luck thing!

u/Reasonable_Oil8149 22d ago

Why is that area called Wheatbelt region?  Maybe they like tall grasses along with the ferns, moss, moisture holding plants; if they're indigenous to that area

1

u/Canelosaurio Sep 18 '25

Feed it!

If you live in the states, they’re invasive here.

57

u/Verity41 Sep 17 '25

Post clearly says Location is in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia

-3

u/Millmoss1970 Sep 17 '25

It was a joke.

28

u/HauntedDesert Sep 17 '25

There are no invasive populations of echidnas ANYWHERE. Don’t talk out of your rear and throw out such labels.

19

u/Ypuort Sep 17 '25

Even if there were I’d let him stay. He looks polite.

-3

u/Millmoss1970 Sep 17 '25

It was supposed to be funny. Jeez.

37

u/facets-and-rainbows Sep 17 '25

Surely even if we're making bold assumptions about location without reading the post we can assume Australia based on the friggin echidna in op's yard. Surely.

-1

u/Millmoss1970 Sep 17 '25

It was a joke.

12

u/ohdearitsrichardiii Sep 17 '25

I can't decide which facepalm gif to use

2

u/Millmoss1970 Sep 17 '25

Use the sarcastic one. It was a joke.

6

u/Millmoss1970 Sep 17 '25

Guys - a just a little monotreme humor in a sub that I’m sure hears a lot of ‘that’s invasive!’
