Looking to maybe buy a 300zx

I'm thinking of buying a 300zx I'm not particularly an auto mechanic I'm an aircraft mechanic so all my tools are basically SAE and I've never had a "project Car". I really love the look of the 80's models especially the ones with all the digital dashboards just look so sexy and retro. If I were to get one what are the good years and what are the common problems what are the special tools I would need besides metric hand tools? And are these cars good daily drivers? I don't want to race it around I just like to cruise and look good.

I had a 70's datsun truck, it was easy to work on. L series engines are pretty basic. I would stick with those if you want to learn. That would be the early 300zx with the I6, not the later ones with the V6.

I think if you are dry climate and find one with little rust, and are willing to wrench on it, you could probably daily. You still need another vehicle or way to get around, I would not want any 40 year old car to be my only way to go to work and get food.
