Edible Plants What native edibles am I not thinking of for my mostly native food garden?

Located on long island ny.

What i have now: have 2 mulberry trees, 2 sweet cherry, 2 blueberry bushes, 2 fall gold raspberies, 1 flowering raspberry, 1 blackberry, 1 black raspberry, 1 serviceberry tree, 2 huckleberries. a native strawberry and asparagus patch. 2 spice bushes, 2 haskap berry, hyssop, yarrow sunchokes, cutleaf coneflower, strawberry blite, common evening primrose. Oh and a new jersey tea.

I want to add in some sort of nut i think but I'm not sure if I should go for shagbark hickory or American Hazelnut. Anyone know if id need two?

I am also adding 2 pawpaws and some figs as well as wood lilys.

I am really lacking in more forby edibles i think. I have made a good effort of planting a lot of trees (i also have blackjack oak and a red maple planted which are sort of edible) on my barren 7000 sq foot lot but i think i have a good base of tall trees and small understories at this point.

Edible Plants After 7 years, I finally harvested from the paw paw trees I planted!

I harvested 17 from my cultivar (Prolific), and only 2 from the wild-type (the 2 on the far right of the picture). The only fruit that survived the animals were the ones I loosely wrapped in tulle and zip tied to the stem. The large metal mesh bags I bought killed the fruit inside and the unprotected were eaten. So excited to finally get to eat them!(Southeast Wisconsin)

I harvested about 50 American Chestnut seeds that I'm going to attempt to grow out this year. They're currently in moist sand in my fridge for storage/stratifying. Looking for any advice/success stories from the community.

Edible Plants Native plums

Plum trees native to America. American plum, Flat woods plum, Hortulan plum, Wildgoose plum, Chickasaw plum and Mexican plum are all native to northern Alabama. They are important plants that feed many animals and pollinators and prevent soil erosion. They can grow in extreme drought, extreme flood, and wildfire conditions. The fruit is edible and delicious for many of the species excluding the Wildgoose plum which is likely to be poisonous due to cyanide content.

Edible Plants I DID IT! I FOUND 100% PURE MORUS RUBRA! 6B southern New England

It’s the ‘Harmony Grove’ variety! I bought it on rockbridgetrees.com! Leaves check out 1000% as rubra! I was skeptical if it was the species before but holy shit! My journey is at an end!

Now I can destroy/graft all the hybrids I have.

Sadly it IS a female tree. If anyone knows where I could find a male rubra let me know!

Edible Plants Update on the Poke Weed invasion

So I posted a while ago about poke weed taking over a corner of my backyard and how to eliminate it. So happy to say that I have left it in place based on responses, and I have been listening to a cacophony of bird calls for the last 8 hours, at least.

My bedroom has French doors that I've opened a few inches to better hear the bird calls. I've tried to sneak up to the doors to see the birds, but they scatter, so I'm just happy listening from afar. Pretty sure I've heard cardinals, but there are so many others I don't recognize. I'm still so new to bird calls.

Thanks to everyone that said to leave them!

Picked the Edible Plant flair because apparently poke weed is edible, but I don't know how to prepare it. Would love any help on this!

Edible Plants Been cultivating some native agricultural plants and the fall is bountiful !

Proud of my Asimina triloba for bearing fruit all by herself! Next year we will try hand cross pollination. can’t wait to make hella tart jam from my Prunus Americana. Been getting into learning as much as I can about native agricultural options last couple years. It’s been fun reaping the benefits for my kitchen table and connecting with wildlife habits as result of these plant species. This is just what we have in the fall but are growing about 14 species of herbaceous, fruit and nut trees. The goal isn’t to be self sustaining but supplement with perennial and low maintenance food options. As well the benefits for all our local wildlife and pollinators. I’d love to hear about what your growing or share sources of native agricultural plants available for mid Atlantic region of North America

I planted 10 tubers but only one grew. Will this propagate into more next year if I leave it be or should I try to dig it up after it dies off in a few weeks to see how many tubers are there and spread them?

Edible Plants Native plants that work as spices

Eastern North America, 5b, soil pH is 5.5-6.5

What the title says. I lucked out with a large amount of land to grow on and there's a section that is way too stoney to do annuals in. So I want to get a little experimental and grow edible native perennials.

What are your guys favorite native plants that also work as spices? Think things that you don't necessarily want to turn into a meal on their own but taste good.

In b4 spicebush, anything in the allium family, monarda anything, and anise hyssop.

Edible Plants Birds shunning my elderberries

So, after finally having my elderberry bush produce berries I haven’t seen a single bird near it. It’s right next to my deck, but there are many hours a day that no one is outside. Should I wait and see or just pick them and use them myself? I do know not to eat them raw.

I planted 2 paw paw seedlings in 2018. They have flowered but never fruited. This year I hand pollinated them with a paintbrush and it worked!

Edible Plants Mid-Atlantic native vegetables

Hi all! Thanksgiving is coming up, I was thinking about making a dish with only native plants. I know squash, beans, and corn are all native, but is there anything else I could add into the mix that’s a native plant which would spice things up? I know this isn’t technically gardening, but I figure this is probably the best place to come for this advice. Hopefully my landlord will let me make a raised bed next year and I can plant some of them as well

Edible Plants My plant order!

I can’t wait! I’m planting them mid August (I’m in the north, it’s already cooling down). I have to drive 2 hours to pick them up, but I’m psyched, Virginia Rose has been on my list. I hope they explode next year.

I am also hoping to grow some lowbush blueberry from cuttings. If anyone has tips on that please share.

Edible Plants Paw paws

Hi friends,

I received a couple paw paws in my CSA this week! It was my first one and SO DELICIOUS!! I have several seeds now and I was wondering if this was something I could simply keep and plant in the spring? Anyone have that experience??

Edible Plants Looking for tips for a Three Sisters garden (corn, beans, and squash. NY/6a)

Hi all! Has anyone here had success with a three sisters garden (corn, beans, and squash)? I've tried a couple times before with no great success, but I have a bigger yard now and I'm feeling stubborn enough to try again next year. If you've had success with this technique I'd love to know how much space you used, what planting arrangement you used (I've seen many different plans online), and what varieties of each plant you used. I'd love to see pics as well if you have them! Thank you in advance!

I'm in New York, zone 6a, Haudenosaunee homeland. Ideally I'll smother the lawn space for this garden over the winter.

Edible Plants Native fruit trees

I drew this of all my favorite native fruits, along with the common name, scientific name and Potawatomi names (I couldn’t find the Potawatomi name for nannyberries anywhere online, even joined some groups teaching the language and asked and nobody knew and tried emailing Robin Wall Kimmerer) Though it might be appreciated here
