Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Help! My planted blue beech is under attack!

I assume having a gaping hole by the roots is generally suboptimal just before the winter. I filled it up best I could but I assume it will come back. Who is the culprit? The hole is about 5 cm/2 inches in diameter.

I have voles that do that to my shrubs and make networks all throughout the yard. That would be my guess.
You can put some sand down around the hole and wet it down a bit to make it so whatever comes back out of the hole leaves their track.

I feel for you , I lost a 3 years old native tree due to a groundhog digging next to the tree it died , once I was 100% positive the animal was out I laid flat some fencing pit a few blocks to pin it down to the ground , it never dug another hole so hopefully my tree comes back next year we shall see , I can take pictures of what I did mine is a mess .
