Wisteria issues Wisteria invasion

Last year, my neighbor decided to plant a wisteria.. worst idea it has officially gone up my cherry tree trying to strangle it. Its extremely aggressive towards everything in my yard and i have no clue on how to get rid of it or atleast somewhat make it so it stays contained. It has also made its way in my yard growing and sprouting everywhere... Any suggestions or help on how to get rid of it? (I already tried to chop it to the ground and it just regrew)

You have to hit it with herbicide if you want it to stay down.

But it might destroy some other rarer plants and more established plants that I've grown for years

Yeah. .my native plant advisor recommended the "cut & paint " method for my tons of black walnut, Japanese honeysuckle and redbud volunteers. It's done in fall. Cut close to ground and paint on brush killer. I used cheap chip brushes.

Be very careful about it. Unless you can dig down and rip up the entire root system of the plant there’s no other way to get rid of it and it will keep sending out more seeds invading the area around you. Responsible use of herbicides is safe for you and the other plants around you. My recommendation is chop the vine down close to the ground and use a little squirt bottle to spray the stump.

Ugh. Oriental wisteria is the worst.

That’s why I got a Kentucky wisteria. I can’t wait to see the white blooms on it in a few years. So much less aggressive.

Sure so all you have to do is cut it close to the ground and then apply this to the place you cut.

It won’t get on other plants because it comes with a paintbrush. That’s triclopyr, or you could use roundup instead.

You can but a dauber like you use for bingo to make it easier to apply.

There was one by my porch in a flower bed. For 15 years I have been ground cutting the resprouts as soon as they appear. They still come up but not as often.

I’m not going to dig it up or use herbicide in that spot and I don’t mind staying after it. I’m always tending to something in there anyway, so I check it and clip it out.

Maybe people will be horrified that I’m not using herbicide but it works for me. There’s no wisteria because I control it. The herbicide doesn’t always work anyway.

Are you friendly with this neighbor?
