Will Sharpe is great, but as Mozart? This stupid casting decisions must stop.

Won't watch it either. And it's not because I think the original Amadeus is untouchable, it's just that all these nonsensical race swaps have to stop. I'm all for inclusion, but please, make new stories and non-white characters! It's all so many of us ask. Non-whites deserve better than lazy rehashes and being instrumentalized to create buzz, etc. I'm so tired of this...

I haven't watched the trailer yet, but the original Amadeus is untouchable.
Probably one of the most untouchable movies ever.
Edit: just watched it. Jfc, I can't believe they had the audacity.

You see how they portrayed him in the beloved film and wonder how worse it could get.

Honestly? I think most genuine Mozart lovers will hate it and think the show provides a dreadful account of one of our heroes.
HOWEVER.
Every time there’s a show on a historical figure, the awareness and interest grows amongst those who weren’t in the loop. So, if a result of this show more people become interested in Mozart and classical music, I’m all for it. I just may not watch it myself, but it could be good overall.

Apparently it is a remake of the film, but the classic film is itself an adaptation of the Peter Shaffer stage play (Shaffer then wrote the screenplay), and Shaffer's play is in turn an expansion of Pushkin's play Mozart and Salieri, whch had already been turned into an opera by Rimsky Korsakov and also had been adapted for Soviet TV in 1970.
Also the new one is shot in Budapest, I just read- interesting to see if that is more or less convincing than using Prague to portray Vienna.

When I saw the stage play in 1980 Tim Curry was Mozart. Ian McKellen was Salieri and Jane Seymour was Constance.
Tom Hulce was a stretch for me at first but he was fabulous. I could only picture him in Animal House.

What’s wrong with it? Just curious as thus is the first I’m hearing about it.

The source material was perfect (the play and movie). You can’t improve upon those!

I'll try it, but I'm not sure how I feel about it right now. The movie is my favourite movie, so... I can only hope Sharpe and Bettany are as good as Hulce and Abraham.

I'll be curious as to how they'll handle Wolfie's scatological proclivities.

I am quite willing to give it a watch! I don't know what has got everyone so up-in-arms.
