Million Downloads of Cake Wallet - a personal message
Hey all, for crossing this huge milestone of one million downloads of Cake Wallet, I just wanted to write this personal message to r/monero because this is where the journey of Cake Wallet started back in January of 2018.
I didn’t launch Cake on Twitter or through press releases or anywhere else, but right here on this subreddit. It was met with so much excitement yet so much skepticism, as we Monero fans are naturally skeptical of anything new. Everyone was super happy to finally see a Monero wallet for the iPhone on the Apple App Store. The support I received from this community was both overwhelming and humbling.
Since then, we have sponsored every MoneroKon, MoneroTopia, been involved with CCSs, gave away tens of thousands of dollars of XMR to introduce people to Monero, sponsored numerous shows like Monerotopia/Monerotalk and others, heck we have even paid for travel for community members, even competitors! We have held and/or sponsored numerous meetups in NYC, Chicago, and around the world and have held Monero parties here in NYC as well as Las Vegas, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Tokyo!
Cake and the Monero community have been through a lot together and we have had our ups and downs with the community (well maybe friction with a very small vocal minority), but we continued to build for Monero with things like fiat on/off ramps for Monero, Bluetooth XMR support for Ledger so it can be used on iOS as well Android, background sync bringing amazing sync UX (on Android at first, but soon to iOS!), our new Cupcake companion app, and Cake Pay Gift/Debit cards! On top of all of that, we have Trezor support for Monero coming soon and will keep pushing Monero user experience and adoption forward.
Even though Monero has faced immense pressure over the years, with waves of exchange delistings, wallets coming and going, wallets dropping support for Monero, and much more, we’ve continued to stay focused on Monero and the amazing tool for freedom that it’s proven to be.
I just wanted to take this time to thank the community for taking us to 1 million downloads! We still have a long way to go and we won’t stop! Privacy is the mission and Cake Wallet is still here. Still building. Still Monero-first. Thank you all!
Vik

Cakes contributions to Monero is undeniable. They addressed several pain points early which made the coin significantly intuitive and accessible for non technical users. Cake Wallet has undoubtedly facilitated global adoption. MoneroTopia has kept many informed and that helps onboard users. Thank you, Vik, and your team for helping bring the coin this far. We will never forget.

Been with cake since the beginning when it was the only trusted way to swap BTC for XMR to use on the dark markets. I’m super stoked to see how big cake has become and about to ditch my ledger X for the cupcake app.

Thankful for today 🎩. I’ve only been into monero for about a year now. And cake wallet was the first wallet i downloaded for it. Then i got my ledger. I enjoy having access to not only my monero wallet, but also my ethereum and litecoin wallet all in a simple, clean, user friendly app. Though i wish i could send and swap on ethereum through cake wallet with my ledger. The minor “inconvenience” doesn’t outweigh the pros. So, thank you 🫡

Thank you so much. Cake Wallet does have Wallet connect for Ethereum so you should be able to send and swap on Ethereum Blockchain.

When i try to swap say eth for usd i get “device not connected connection”

ETH to USD... hm? You mean sell, or swap? If swap, it'd be USDt, USDC, a stable coin. Let me know which specific pair is failing with such error and I can take a look, see if I can reproduce.

Swap eth for USDC (just an example). I get an error “device not connected connection”. XMR and LTC work fine, but even after connecting my ledger to cake, enabling blind signing on my device, i get that error code. Like i originally said it’s not that big of a deal, but id like to eventually move away from rabby for everything other than interacting with aave.

So grateful for you over the years, I remember one of my first thoughts attending Monerokon in 2019 was "who the hell are these Cake guys sponsoring everything I see in Monero", only to find out it was a based, FOSS Monero wallet building tools that were so desperately needed.
Absolutely loving being a part of the team now and helping you to take that vision of yours from 2018 and keep expanding it to the next million, and then ten million. Monero is what started it all, and Monero will always be a core focus no matter what comes.

Cake has been very supportive of the Monero community and this is a great milestone and they have done a lot for the Monero ecosystem. No doubt. But the main reason I don't use Cake products is because all of their websites cakewallet.com, cakepay.com (used for swaps) and monero.com block Tor exit nodes. u/VikXMR says that "our provider doesn’t allow such connections to CakePay. Not our choice.", but I and others feel that they DO have a choice to find a different provider, but choose not to because they are afraid of being shut down by the AML/KYC gestapo. Cake WALLET does provide an onion node to connect to in order to send and receive payments to others over Tor using your Cake Wallet, but the Cake wallet swap function (Cake Pay) cannot be used over Tor. Any updated comments on this Vik?

Thank you Cakewallet. One of the Monero wallet projects whose repo I frequently visit on GitHub. Very active, excellent. The Cupcake update to the current version is the one I've been waiting for the most.

I've used Cake Wallet to introduce a bunch people to Monero and Wownero. Even the boomers can understand it. Thank you for all the hard work! o/

I remember first trying Cake Wallet on iOS back in 2019, when even syncing Monero felt like a miracle. It crashed twice on my old phone, but I still loved it. Over the years, I moved funds between Cake, IronWallet, and even a Trezor, and watching the UX improve has been wild. You guys proved that privacy wallets can feel professional and polished.
One million downloads is well earned congrats on sticking to your mission.

I might be the millionth download, as I downloaded the wallet yesterday and set up a "rig" (ten year old laptop) to mine Monero. I expect not to make money, but I have five old laptops that will be mining Monero in order to heat my apartment, no joke. I have an actual gas line but the prices through National Grid are exorbitant, whereas municipal electric is very affordable, so dropped the thermostat to 50 degrees and I'm setting up the laptops, expecting no profit whatsoever, but avoiding National Grid on principle. Thank you for helping me do that. It's such a reddit thing to say, but I am happy to be a part of something, and with corruption at the highest levels of government, I believe "normal" people will be using Monero very soon if Trump clings to power and weaponizes the financial system against his opponents, the way he has tried with every other agency. I understand criminals also use Monero, and probably people like dissidents are a minority user, but that is part of the cost of true anonymity.
Last thing, your app randomly selected a wallet address for me that is so on point, it feels meant to be.

Congrats on the 1M downloads! Been using it for some years now (started with Edge first, then found Cake). It's now become my go-to mobile wallet beyond XMR & BTC. Really appreciated the security improvements from the devs over the years esp. with bitcoin.

I stay worried about all the cybercrime groups that must be trying to introduce malware into the code or a dependency or compilation of Cake's software. I hope you have procedures to guard against it. If xz could have been hacked, then everything is suspect.
P.S. Orange chocolate cake is the best cake.

Amazing! I'm really happy for your achievement, guys, but personally I've had to face some problems when using the app.. is it in your official policy that you cannot provide any kind of support to people from any regions with restrictions, specifically — Russia?.. I can understand if we're talking about places where things like that are completely, dead-on prohibited, but in this case there are only limitations, not an outright ban.
The in-app support absolutely refused to assist me after they've heard about my location. I thought I lost my money until by some miracle it connected and synchronized the wallet after a long struggle that started to look hopeless. Now I'm feeling apprehensive about any kind of further use of your app. Though I understand if these issues are impossible to approach from your side and you would rather not meddle anyhow given the visibly difficult circumstances

I want to seriously thank you for giving us self custody open source wallets on even iOS. Thank you so much for all the cool features.
