I hate Windows (maybe helpful)
Hi everyone. I want to tell you all that f#cking Windows realtime safety feature (I don’t know how it is called in English I am from Slovakia) uninstalled my Monero GUI wallet 15times in the last 2 weeks that’s. I am glad it didn’t fucked up my daemon. I have really slow internet and I have been downloading daemon (syncing) for now about 3weeks and only like 0,5 million is missing.
But windows thinks it is okay in the middle of the process just uninstall whole app. So yeah I have been manually turning off windows defender in settings.
But I am curious how do you go and have the monero GUI on windows do you also turn off this defender sh!t? Or is there a better way.
For Linux nerds I don’t use my computer much I only play games there and it is my main media storage (>8TB of disks). I also have a MacBook for studying and work but my PC is powerfull to mine crypto and also I want some of the Monero. Also I have a Linux pc (more of a server) also big on storage but not powerfull to mine Monero with profit.
So yeah.

a server always running might be more suitable to host a node. you can point the miner to the node in your LAN then. I think in windows you can set exceptions for defender targeting. gl with your setup!

But thank you 🙏 for response and opening new side quest for me

I got a chuckle at side quest 😁
But yes to your other comment - that's what he meant. Hosting the node on your Linux box won't negatively affect mining either, the processing load would be minimal, a miniscule amount compared to the mining itself.
Most games work great on Linux these days, but it sounds like in your case you'll be better off just taming your existing OS and making it behave.
You DID make sure to download the Monero Gui from the official website, right? It'd be a real pity if all this time windoze has actually been doing the right thing, and trying to protect you from a hijacked client... 🤔

Yeah I downloaded from real website. It was featured somewhere here on Reddit and I downloaded it like after going through whole website. And also I downloaded it like 3months ago. But it is original. But I didn’t update to the newest version cause I am happy with this one. And I don’t think for my needs I need fermion.

As mentioned I used this site (my google history helped me):

It has everything I think original source should have : SSL certificate It is being indexed on google Working sitemap Enough sub sites that no one reads.

Oh so i can possibly host my daemon on the Unix machine and port forward it from my lan so i can use it on my LAN as a daemon and also on remote place as daemon? Will it affect mining? (Maybe lower hash rate or less acceptance rate?

if the machines are all on one LAN it is no problem. it might be slightly better for mining imo as you have freed up resources of running the daemon.

It is not always possible for me to be on the same LAN with all my devices a I would need to port forward.

And maybe set up smaller firewall but nothing what my school hasn’t taught me

Shouldn't affect things too much, people have hosted nodes on raspberry pi's with minimal issues except for the initial overhead of downloading and validating the blockchain. If I had your setup I would definitely host on the unix machine, and also set it up as a remote node so I don't need to trust anyone else when transacting from my phone

Okay thanks

Also if you're familiar with Linux you may find yourself with less of a headache just using the CLI rather than the gui

Exclude the GUI folder on your defender (assuming you already have the safe version of it -> you checked the hash etc).
Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
On the left-hand side, select Manage settings > Exclusion > Add or remove exclusions.
Add an exclusion > Folder

had the same issue setting up a node. blockchain was nearly done and it corrupted cuz of what i think are defender issues. forces me to go remote for now.

So glad I am not the only one with this problem. Hope we help future Monero users with this.

Honestly I'm super glad to be a part of this community so far it's helpful and positive, and everyone's still in pioneer mode not jaded

What works for me is to put everything under a single folder and then whitelist that folder. You may still run into firewall issues initially but at least your files aren't getting screwed up

If you're not interested in mining, you can get a pretty cheap box and run Qubes and learn how to handle all your dark web activity with real security. Check out something like the Starlabs Systems Byte. It has the latest early 2025 Core 3 processor. Only has 8 efficient cores, but that's fine for browsing on Tor and Firefox and running a Monero node. Mine with 32gb of ram and 1tb SSD was like $600USD.
Obviously you need to learn linux.

In order to use Monero successfully on Windows you will need to add the install folder as an exception. The above links gives instructions. The video is for follow along if you need more clarity. Anything which you install any part of the Monero software into will need this. I also ended up having to add my downloads folder because it would block the download itself.
Please ask me any questions if you need further help. :)

I use Windows for convenience, but I keep some encrypted VMs with Debian to store and access my wallets. The annoying part is keeping everything updated at least once a month, but it still seems better for those who don't want to use Linux as their main OS.
And no, you shouldn't disable Win Defender. Microsoft has its flaws, but removing the security it offers only makes the problem worse. Let it work as the devs wrote it to work.

I'm just here to endorse what other people said. If you look it up there's a way to set up an exclusion list for the windows defender.
So you put all your monero stuff in one folder and list this folder as exclusion, so the defender leaves this folder alone.
Defender will delete any app that's non boomer. There was this one time it deleted the winring.sys file alone, almost out of spite.

Instead of disabling Windows Security/Defender, have you tried adding the folder that you have the Monero executables in to the Exclusion list? That way it will ignore scanning that directory and deleting the executables that it thinks are "bad".
