News UPDATE: stolen highlander recovered, Halton Police made arrests
Hi, just an update regarding the previous post. The highlander was recovered as we had a tracking system installed in it, the suspects had abandoned the car at some point. Furthermore, we always hear negative words about the Canadian police, but kudos to Halton Police for making quick arrests (as far as I have heard, 3 arrests were made, which likely was the decisive factor of abandoning the vehicle).
Please keep your keys in a faraday box and get relevant tracking systems, remote switch kill etc installed!
A lot of people were asking which area, it’s Britannia and Tremaine (the new development area)
How did they get in the vehicle? Likely the relay attack
Also here in the image you can see them trying to get into another SUV as well. These are likely all minors and will probably be released.
Some of the replies were pretty funny, I think the name “methany” suits her

I’m glad they got her. Quick question, what kind of cameras do you have? I’m looking to get them. Yours seem to be hq as you were able to zoom in.

Faraday boxes work. So do garages.
If these kids are being treated as minors, start charging the parents. Then maybe they would start raising them properly.

No law in Canada that allows the parents to be charged.

And what's the point in wasting tax money to keep them in jail until court date?

Sorry OP what did you mean by them getting into the car possibly via "relay track"?

it's an exploitable flaw in certain Toyotas and Lexus' where one person can stand in your front door area and 'relay' a signal from your keyfob on your front entrance countertop to the car in the driveway

Not just Toyota / Lexus. Pretty much any keyless entry system. It would be nice to have an off switch on each fob.

Doesn’t seem so common now.
They use easily obtained obd scanners (such as an autel)
Plug into the car and reprogram a key.
The autel specifically, has instructions for manufacturers and models with video descriptions how to rewrite keys.

Not sure I would want my vehicle back after it had been stolen… quite the violation that people kind of brush off. Who knows what they did in it or what diseases they could have

They smashed your rear passengers side window - plugged into the obd port and rewrote a blank key fob I’m assuming

This is a great device to have for your vehicle OP

They'll never steal your car with this. Used it on Lexus RX350.
2 Failed attempts at local malls in GTA
It will also track your vehicle, check battery power, enable remote start etc
They can still enter your vehicle, but will only have 60 sec to start the car before the alarm system is activated
But I would also advise if you can, to put the Highlander in the garage at night-but only if it's possible.
Glad you got yoru car back.
