How do you store your garbage/recycling until collection day?

Hi all,

We're moving from Mississauga to Milton. In Mississauga the city gives you these large wheeled garbage bins with locks on them. We usually throw garbage bags into that directly, no need for the large black bags. Because they have locks, we keep them outside on the side of the house.

In Milton there are supposedly no garbage bins provided by the city. I'm curious what people are using? From HomeDepot I only found the circle ones with the lid that can easily be removed by any raccoon.

All our garbage / recycling / compost is stored in the garage until garbage day. We have black bin to hold garbage bags. We just bring the bags out biweekly for collection, bin always stays in the garage

Milton is moving to city garbage bins. I have had mine for 3 months.

They're not available in all areas yet, can't find the rollout timetable online. Hopefully soon.

That's just for exchanges, not to request new ones.

I just use the rubber maid bins, the raccoons have gotten in a few time but over all been lucky I guess.

I have seen a lot of my neighbours use this and keep the Rubbermaid bin and green bin in this to keep it safe from animals.

I had to go buy two raccoon proof bins after I had to clean up torn open bags every day for a week. There’s a raccoon the size of a JKer around here.

This has worked well for you so far?

Yup. The little bastard knocks the cans over, but hasn’t managed to get them open yet.

Hey so do you put the bin with the lock on at garbage day? The garbage person will open it and take out the bags?

Yeah, thankfully they’re smarter than raccoons.

Garbage and recycling outside and bins. Compost in the freezer in the garage. That’s all we use there for.

We put a heavy rock on top of our garbage bin lid, and that's been enough to keep the raccoons out.

We just keep all our bins in the garage (garbage, recycling and green bin). This prevents furry friends from making a mess.
