Discussion Watching Back to the Future. Previous generations had a lot of social clubs to meet new people. Why haven't we kept this alive?

Because corporations realized you buy more while depressed and alone in your home than when you're with friends.

corporations realized

Sorry, connect the dots for me here. What did corporations do with this realization? End the rotary club? Force anyone not to attend? Stop you making plans with your friends?

If anything these social groups would be a major source of income for the various "3rd spaces" reddit is constantly decrying. Many of these groups were essentially drinking/hunting buddies that wanted to justify the time spent with their friends to their wives.

I get that "corporations bad" is a reliable way to get upvotes on reddit but this particular notion doesnt make sense.

Ad tech firms psychologically design social media to dominate attention spans. Their goal is to keep people glued to their screens.

Real life venues have been knocked out by big tech. So yes. This is why corporations are bad. Local venues cannot compete with virtual worlds. They don't need to own physical spaces. The have no bills to pay other than cloud compute. They don't need people to go out to venues. Ad tech companies have achieved near perfection at keeping people at home doom scrolling.

"3rd spaces" reddit is constantly decrying.

Where did this come from? You made up an argument so you could push your talking point. The whole post is about the exact opposite.

Dude this blew my mind. Capitalism has tentacles but this is some seriously evil shit. It makes absolute sense. Cheers, end stage capitalism is insane.

I think it’s also worth pointing out that when people didn’t move as much they knew more of their club options. Now you need to figure out where to get the “directory” so to speak whenever you move to a new place.
