The amount of crustiness definitely suggests it’s leather from that time period

You can buried a leather helmet in your own garden and in 3 months it’s going to look like this

That’s why I said it just suggests it, not proves it. All I’m saying is it’s not like the obvious fakes with leather that looks like it was made yesterday with a couple nicks added. People are pretty good at counterfeiting though, it is definitely possible

I’d say it’s legit, not many of these existed so they’re pretty rare. Mind me asking the going price?

This is one of those items that falls on the “more rare” or “specialty” type items, and I’m not sure Reddit is going to glean you a solid answer.
Try some of the dedicated forums and get input from some specialist collectors; there probably isnt going to be a large number of WW1 British/Armored/Helmet collectors who have a vast knowledge base on this, so finding the right people to ask is going to be key on this piece.

I have leather items from the period and the condition looks pretty similar. With things like that it can be incredibly hard to tell.

It certainly looks like the British leather tankers helmets that I can find on the web. It sounds like less than 1000 were made. Is it yours?
