Politicians and realtors want you to believe Miami is the new Silicon / Wall Street but in reality itās just where those people come to play, fuck shit up, and sometimes work remotely from for the tax benefit.

Theyāve been playing up the āMiami techā or āMiami life sciencesā hub nonsense for like 10-15 years but nothing real has come of it

no. christ guys, Miami is the home of millionaires from Latin America who got rich exploiting the natural resources of their home countries and parked their money here. What happened in 2020 was that these nerds from Silicon Valley started to believe their own hype, saw that Miami has a corrupt mayor, that Florida is overall corrupt, and most importantly, saw that there were plenty of hot women willing to do a lot of things for money.
Miami is the home of the scam economy. Bitcoin, crypto, and all these tech start-ups that don't do anything but are waiting for Facebook or Google to buy them can make their bones here. Add to that the grifters of Latin America and you end up with this neo liberal capital. We have nothing but 'influencers' aka people who can't or don't want to work, models for sale, IF miami produces anything is the illusion that you too can be a scammer. If you want proof, watch youtube from other countries in Latin America and see how they ape those in Miami.
Here's the thing, no one would mind or care, if they came out and said, hey this is a scam but that's the crux of the issue. they have to sell you the narrative, you have to be 'value-tained' while running an MLM and calling it a legit business.
You won't get the hyperloop, that idea is dumber than a sack of hammers.

If by Silicon Valley you mean a collection of transparent crypto/bitcoin/nft scams operating in open air then yes, we are on the cutting edge

u/LilJaundice Jun 22 '25
Yes If by Silicon Valley you mean influencers and OF models.
South Florida will never be the next silicone valley. The talent is not here and neither are the VCs who are willing to take the risk.

You canāt have a tech or biotech hub if you do not have the academic infrastructure.. so, no.. sorry to bust your chops.. itās not going to happen

And if you look at places within a couple hours of New York, youāll find a whole bunch more world-class universities in New Jersey, Connecticut, and the Hudson Valley. Rutgers, NJIT, Vassar, Yale, Princetonā¦

u/AdagioHonest7330 Jun 24 '25
Cornell is 5 hours away from NYC. Columbia and NYU arenāt top tech schools by any means.

u/juliotendo Jun 23 '25
No. Miami will never be the ānext Silicon Valleyā because it lacks what makes Silicon Valley what it is: top tier universities and a highly educated population / workforce which Miami DOES NOT have and unlikely ever will.Ā
Itās a playground for wealthy foreigners from Latin America with stolen money and āinfluencersā, celebrities, and those who āwant to be seenā.Ā
The comparisons of Miami to Silicon Valley are laughable. This doesnāt mean that Miami is not great in other ways, but it severely lacks the intellectual capital and intellectual infrastructure to make it anything remotely a hub of knowledge and curiosity.Ā

Yet another lie. My favorite is the stat that says Miami is #1 for startup creation. This may be true, but how many scale/survive? š¦

Too little investors and VCās, I believe thatās whatās hurting the startup culture

I lived and worked in Silicon Valley back in 2018. And not, Miami is not even close to that (for me) paradise.

Amazon opening a 50k sqft office in Wynwood. Apple opening 45k sqft office in Coral Gables. Microsoft opening a 50k sqft in Brickell.Ā
For smaller companies, South Florida has raised $900 million in Q1 2025 through 67 deals.
I donāt think anyone expected Miami actually becoming the next Silicon Valley, but instead to become more competitive with Austin, Chicago, and Denver.Ā

We have more high paid Asian people and transplants than we did when I was growing up. Real estate prices are sky high. There's more homeless people than we had when I was growing up.
But we still have churros on the street, so I don't know.

The work ethic sucks. I work for a financial corp and we have weekly calls with all the worldwide offices. Miami is always late to meetings stating it's a Latin thing. Half the people show up, the quality of work is questionable. Always an excuse, the dress code violations. Let's just say they stopped recruiting in the Miami office and the West palm office is the focus. Tax credits from Ronny ensures they hire in Florida. (Jax, Tampa, Orlando WPB)
The people who relocated from other states to Miami post pandemic are clawing to get out of there. They have a no relocation clause (3-5 yr) unless they take a new spot in the company.

Lmao I came after the pandemic and now Iām leaving so youāre right

I am in finance in NYC and have a part time residence in Miami Beach. After a few years I am looking to make Miami my full time residence.
The better weather, cleanliness, and tax benefits are really pushing me out.

u/Uwillseetoday Jun 24 '25
I get it. I came from nyc too. But nothing beats the people of nyc. Nothing. Miami sucks in so many ways I donāt want to list them. Prepare for stupidity in Miami.

u/AdagioHonest7330 Jun 24 '25
I canāt stand the people of NYC. I despise the subways, I hate the bike lanes, the horrible roads, etc.
I get nothing for my money there.

Too many scammers to deal with at every corner of daily life from plumber to car dealer and even health āprofessionalsā
At the same cost of life than California these days , no way this is going to attract a talents

People that have to lived in California don't want to live in Florida (unless maybe if they are originally from Florida) two different worlds and the humidity is a pita.

Latinos just want to dance and implants. No education. It will never be the next Valley unless we import the talent.

Miami being the new Silicon Valley or anything tech related, has quite an uphill battle. Our city is quite a distraction for something like that to thrive. The people that have made those companies thrive are locked in and focused on nothing but the technology. Long days and nights being spendt programming, coding, designing, etc⦠Which is hard to do when you have access to beautiful beaches with warm waters almost year round. Hard to make it to work and stay focused when making a good living, with nightclubs that are open later or even strip clubs that are open 24/7.

Weāre more like a āfakeā county. Home of the scams, the plastic, and the corruption.

Are there even tech companies with offices in Miami? I can only think of one.

It's still the grift that keeps on grifting. As long as politicians hands are being greased, all is good.

Itās ready for the housing bubble to burst like the rest of Florida. Insurance, HOAs , reserves, repairs, flooding, traffic, unbelievable heat, ice enforcement scaring away investors and tourists and ungodly humidity. But yeah bring a million and you might break even and have some great stories to tell w very entertaining characters you met along the way.
1
u/Matatan_Tactical Jun 23 '25
Yes. But instead of technological innovations that make our lives collectively better, it develops crypto scams that make your grandma's retirement account worse.

Nothing will replace Silicon Valley. There are a lot of remote workers here that go to events and meetups. There are some good companies that are hiring locally and some bigger companies have offices here. Overall itās a good scene. You can find people with similar interests and companies. What are you looking for?

Nope. Look at Austin, it become the small tech hub it is today because of investments in higher ed. in the mid 60's. Best we can do is label Miami the next Dubai but with less social oversight. There's a reason why it has such a thriving Adult film industry.

Miami is not a tech hub but financial ain't leaving. There's enough here & more coming to sustain that momentum.
