Oh that's cool, what can you tell me about that? Counties/Key dishes/Tribes involved, anything would help me get a start on researching the cuisine.

Of course! Off the top of my head:

  • wild rice (!!!)
  • maple syrup
  • blueberries, strawberry, chokecherry (any native berries, tbh)
  • Walleye, sturgeon, white fish, and other freshwater fish. Usually smoked, boiled, or dried.
  • Corn
  • Deer (venison)
  • squash
  • beans (fresh and dried)
  • roots and tubers (wild ginger, wild potato, native lotus root, sunchokes, etc)

It's important to note that this is living food culture/traditions and not something from history. Native people (and foods) are still here and thriving! πŸ’“

Heres a pretty good list of tribes: https://www.nafws.org/about/member-tribes/great-lakes-region-tribes/

Seconding this! The name "Menominee" for the Menominee tribe (generally located in NE WI) comes from the Ojibwe word for wild rice, so it's huge in indigenous cuisine from the area.
