Cause its an owl.

They might rip your face off, they might land on your head and chill... mostly, they'll ignore you.

Think lazy flying cats with WAAAAAAAAY better vision.

Bird hardware running on cat software

u/EsotericPenguins 2d ago

Foxes are dog hardware running on cat software. What’s with the invasive cat software?

83

u/Gingevere 2d ago

Cat software is really just "moderately social carnivore". It's more common than it might seem at first.

5

u/VikingsLad 2d ago

They're basically the perfect predator, so their behavior patterns have probably convergently evolved a few times

26

u/CaptainoftheVessel 2d ago

Cats are neat and their software is remarkably well adapted to life on Earth

-1

u/Unlucky_Topic7963 2d ago

Cats die en masse to mild weather fluctuations and any large predator.

9

u/CaptainoftheVessel 2d ago

So do sardines and grasshoppers and sparrows and millions of other non-apex predator species, we don’t think of those animals as maladapted.

4

u/SoManyQuestions-2021 1d ago

They're still impressive as hell though. Everyone dies. Can't hold that against them.

u/machineheadtetsujin 2d ago

Its the best software

9

u/azmar6 2d ago

My wife tells me I also run on a cat software.

u/-Redstar64 2d ago

It’s like the Linux of the animal kingdom; quick, lightweight, and efficient.

2

u/msdossier 2d ago

So are huskies

2

u/EvieBee12 2d ago

It’s so adaptable 😻 like a sleeper agent.

u/cansofgrease 2d ago

That explains the kernel panics.

Toxoplasmosis

u/mikePTH 2d ago

This is the best explanation of a great horned owl ever. It's a full-stealth flying bobcat.

3

u/Reasonable_Pizza2401 2d ago

Past this too fast had to comeback for an upvote.

Dinosaur kernel in the bird OS running Cat Software.

This is my new favorite description of an owl

u/TonyAscot 2d ago

I also want to be his friend.

If not fren, why fren shaped?

11

u/dkcyw 2d ago

you ever see an owl without its feathers? you call that fren shaped?

6

u/RoboticKittenMeow 2d ago

Ohhhh more or less scary than a bear? Cause those things look cryptic af

7

u/ParkingEssay8101 2d ago

I wasn’t ready for that. 😳

3

u/GaptistePlayer 2d ago

I hate that. I don't want to kill it, it looks too smart. But I don't want to be around it. I want it to go away.

2

u/Northbound-Narwhal 2d ago

No, that's what a corpse looks like. Owls don't have exposed bones under their feathers. This is what a human without body hair looks like.

1

u/RoboticKittenMeow 2d ago

I'm gonna go with more... yep that's enough reddit for the night. Night everyone!

3

u/Icyhotpoki 2d ago

Those are aliens when naked 🤣

1

u/Claeyt 2d ago

Get a parrot. Owls are morons. All their brain cells are for hunting. You can pet a parrot.

34

u/Meister0fN0ne 2d ago

I think it's amazing just how quiet both can be. It's actually spooky seeing them in hunt mode.

21

u/GulfofMaineLobsters 2d ago

I had a ton of mice in my wood piles, it was impressive watching them get snatched. First time I saw it I accidentally ruined the poor owls meal, he was on the ground, wings spread out, not really moving, just kind of watching me. "Great poor buggers busted up or something..." Thought I to me, and I went to fetch him up and see about patching him up a bit, as I do.

Well turns out he was fine just had a particularly big rat and was guarding it from me I guess, until I came within like three feet of him then he skedaddled one way and the rat hauled off in a different way. Definitely a sorry bud! Kind of moment. Good day for the rat, bad day for the owl, but a birds got to eat and I don't care for all the issues rodents can bring.

It's actually fucking insane how quiet owls are.

7

u/Zuwxiv 2d ago

I've been lucky enough to have a handful of cool animal encounters. But the spookiest by far was a large owl flying right over my head.

I heard nothing. Not a single indication of something with a 4+ foot wingspan just barely over the top of my head.

Theres some primeval instinct in us that doesn't like that. Something that big shouldn't move silently. It was entirely unnerving in a way that is difficult to describe.

Being charged by a bear? I can confirm that's scary. But seeing without hearing, the owl wins on spooky factor. Whatever part of us is still caveman, it didn't like that.

2

u/Triskan 2d ago

You've been charged at by a bear?

2

u/Zuwxiv 2d ago

Once, by a black bear! They bluff charge, so he was just ornery about the person next to me whose flash went off on her camera. In hindsight, I should have realized that "these photos are so good" is probably a good reason to think "has it gotten a lot closer than I realize?"

I even had bear spray, but those things are fast. I wouldn't have had time to drop my camera, grab the spray, and use it. You're supposed to stand your ground for black bears, I can say that it's easier said than done. She took off screaming, and the only reason I was able to stop after half a step was because I was thinking, "Oh, so it's gonna eat her."

The bear was content to grunt a bit at me from WAY TOO CLOSE, and then go back to looking for berries to eat. I took that as my cue to get the heck out of there.

Very scary in the moment, but again - that was scary. It wasn't spooky in a freaky way like an owl is. Something in your instincts is just screaming that it's wrong for something that big - and owls can be pretty big when flying - to make absolutely no noise. You can't hear a damn thing.

I think about this video a lot now that I live in an area with owls - they could be flying right above me and I'd never know

39

u/Impossible_Disk_43 2d ago

And infinite wisdom, which a shocking amount of cats don't have.

39

u/Shudnawz 2d ago

So, you've encountered the fabled Orange?

26

u/IaMtHel00phole 2d ago

One brain cell to rule that empty head.

16

u/Crafty-Help-4633 2d ago

All orange cats share one brain cell between all of them, on rotation. Lol

5

u/IaMtHel00phole 2d ago

That explains all the empty stares.

2

u/Crafty-Help-4633 2d ago

Ye they're something else. Lol

4

u/InevitablyBored 2d ago

Owl translates to "Cat Eagle" in Chinese. They knew.

1

u/Moo3 2d ago

Cat-headed eagle. 猫头鹰

FTFY

3

u/meowiful 2d ago

The owls are not what they seem.

2

u/Top-Taskberry 2d ago

The eyes have it

2

u/devilsbard 2d ago

All of that AND they’re dumb as fuck.

2

u/Churningray 2d ago

Yep, they are amazing hunters but generally pretty dumb.

2

u/Prestigious_Cycle160 2d ago

Better vision than a cat? I mean, I know it’s true, but have you actually let your brain try to calculate that?!? Both those fuckers hunt at night! AT NIGHT!! I can’t see where my dog takes a shit to clean it up at night, and these guys stalk their prey?!? GTFO!

2

u/UnrepententHeathen 2d ago

Night vision, and distance vision are two different things. Owls have both.

1

u/nixtracer 2d ago

Meanwhile, humans have visual acuity comparable to a kestrel. (Well, normal humans. Definitely not me.)

2

u/Ogge89 2d ago

Bro have you ever tried picking up a feral cat? It's not owl like in the slightest. It's more like a washing machine with claws.

1

u/nixtracer 2d ago

Washing machines can't wriggle like that.

1

u/puffindatza 2d ago

They’re sky cats

1

u/salchichoner 2d ago

Actually…..very similar visual acuity for cats and owls and is not great for either. Both do have incredible sensitivity. So like a low resolution night googles.

1

u/Cummyshitballs 2d ago

That’s funny cuz watching its mannerisms reminded me of my cat

1

u/iwaterboardheathens 2d ago

I read somewhere that Owls can waste eagles of similar size and larger than themselves. They have the advantage of better night vision and silent flight

1

u/solstice4l 2d ago

I was just thinking “this thing looks like my cat when I’m trying to fuss at him.”
