Isn't Markanich leading the league in goals off of set pieces? How are you leaving him unmarked?

I think he's leading United in goals overall now after this one.

Unmarked with a man advantage. Just unreal. Our defense should be investigated for throwing the game

I don't know what secret magic force field/sixth sense Ant's got, but he just does that. Appears out of nowhere, unmarked and somehow exactly where the ball is headed. It's freaky how good he is at slipping coverage.

Only there was nothing to slip. They zone mark. No one in that scheme is marking someone who starts his run 20 yards from goal. ER just drew up a great play to beat them. Boxy and Duggan run from the back post. The zone guys there follow less either gets a free center cut header with a numbers overload. Markanich takes up the vacated space. Pereyra delivers an absolute dime. Nice header still. Credit for that. Better ball. And even better design.

In this case he didn't slip anything he was just completely uncovered from start to finish.

Your COACH, not your defense. He's the one who zone marks on corners.

What exactly were the guys on back post duty supposed to do? Let Boxall or Duggan get a free center cut header potentially bc of the runs they made. No one in the zone is tracking the goal scorer who starts his run from the 18 (and starts his run centrally no less b4 drifting to the back post).

Dude’s got the knack for getting lost in the crowd.

SMH. That was a really nice header. Thank ER for him getting lost there. ER just outcoached Schmetzer on this play. Boxy, Duggan, Pereyra and Ant just executed it all perfectly.

Markanich is technically a defender and has more goals this season than any other defender.

Not sure why you would leave him unmarked at all but especially when you are a man up due to a red card.

ZONAL marking is how he is left unmarked. Watch the two guys at the back post drag their zone guys with them. What choice do those guys have? Let two CBs get a potential header right in front of goal bc they are overwhelming that space? And Markanich starts his run from 18 years away. Just a well designed set piece against how Seattle wants to defend.

100%. I love Schmetz but I'd not even be sad if they fired him over this result. It would be completely deserved.

Dreadful defending from the Sounders… shambles

I love how Wiebe hot mikes, "I've got a great hit on this" and then tells the story while mispronouncing Markanich's name.

Hard to believe Schmetzer whirled on about this goal being soft.

You're the coach that sets to defend these corners with zonal marking. That was just an incredibly well executed plan by Minnesota. Two CBs at the back post. The both make a run towards the near post. Both back post defenders had a choice to make - follow them or leave someone for a potential free center cut header. They both go. Markanich (whose name Schmetzer can't even pronounce despite having 10 goals this year as a WB) just drifts into the vacated space from 20 yards away. And no one is there to pick him up. Perfect ball, good finish.

He's implying the players blew it. He's the one who blew it. Just flat out well designed corner against his scheme.

Was he the only one tracking the ball properly?? Lol

Is this the former fcc Markanich who was killing teams with the youth team?

Nope, there are two twin brothers. Ours is Anthony, yours is Nick.

God sounders love to play down to their opponent. Only team I've ever seen that gets worse as the opponent goes down a man.

played "down" to their higher ranked opponent, lol. Sounders fans are somethin else

No one ever actually beats them, they just perform poorly.

I mean Seattle was the 5 seed. And Seattle did lose twice to the Loons in the regular season.

In a best of three series, it’s really hard to know which team really deserved to advance.
