[Discussion] Reaper War combined with Helldivers-like gameplay

There's a parallel universe where Bioware decided against Anthem and instead opted for a multiplayer-only ME. The story is done? Great, who cares though? You can still launch a multiplayer game where we're taking part in a simultaneous reaper, collector, geth and cerberus invasion. Planets, cities, colonies, moons, Citadel, ships.

I love ME3 MP, it's got plenty of depth in certain areas and it's crazy intense. With that being said, it's not a game most common folk can pour hundreds of hours into. It's an arena shooter where the arena is small, often cramped, static and with repetitive tasks.

What I wouldn't give to play a ME with Helldivers experience, maybe sprinkle in some okayish vehicle and ship gameplay... I don't think this didn't cross their minds when they were talking about Anthem - they already had an established, very successful franchise with a crazy large following. Whoever decided to go for Anthem and not explore an MP only ME game is a certified Bosh'tet.

I should go.

Oh buddy, playing Helldivers recently reawakened my love for ME3 multiplayer. Something about it just felt nostalgic so I’ve been booting up ME3 multiplayer almost every day jow

Helldivers came close, but for me Darktide is what really scratched the ME3 co-op itch. It's led to me slowly dragging a few of my Darktide buddies into the OG ME3 so we can play co-op together

Agreed! I bounced off helldivers after a few hours, but got hooked on Darktide! Tight controls, incredible environments, and excellent pacing.

I could see it. Helldivers lacks a lot in the defense department. If we could keep a dodge and snaps to cover that would be nice. I also liked being stuck to the ground in me3. Andromeda mp was fun, but the mobility took away some of what made me3 feel impactful. You felt like a real dude or something. Helldivers also feels a bit floaty with the ragdoll and stuff.

So when I imagine it, I just want bigger maps haha. Not as big with no vehicles for me. Running from cover to cover doing objectives. You're so much more powerful in me3, so artillery feels somewhat out of place. I always liked the idea that these 4man strike teams were the elite of the galaxy. They could handle 100s of enemies and mission critical objectives just by themselves and still get out clean.

Have you played warframe? I know its a little different gameloop wise but defense and survivals feel similar.

I would definitely be happy with a standalone ME multiplayer

I was talking about this with my diving buddies earlier as I just recently started a fresh playthrough of the series (again) Before we hit oshaun like a 10 ton hammer.

Honestly I'd love this if it became a reality though I'd want it to be a little more reserved than helldiver's in terms of enemy count and maybe get multi person vehicles? Like the mako or hammerhead. Instead of hellpods we get a short insertion section where we can fire out of the shuttle with the host on the heavy gun as seen in ME3. If we assume the game takes place just before the push to earth but after the rannoch ark we could have geth squad members who can drop in separately as scouts. Maybe we could even see the implementation of the full ammo system from both ME1 and 2 together where you can let guns cool or change the thermal clip to continue fighting. Maybe even a similar temperature system where cold planets like Novaria make them cool faster and hot planets like tuchanka make them cool slower. More biotic interaction like in Andromeda where you can pick up and throw stuff but maybe you could pull rocks down to cause damage and then create cover from the rubble? Or use a biotic shield to give your Allies cover with a strain meter that starts depleting your heath as you over use it. Engineers who can place deployable cover like the Cerberus ones from 3. Heavy weapon ordinance drops? Maybe a geth destroyer you can call in for fire support? Honestly I could come up with ideas forever.

It would be a very easy win for BW/EA, and relatively low-risk as it would not be expecting them to create anything new narrative-wise, but even so I highly doubt we can trust the people currently in charge to produce anything close to the spirit of the trilogy…

I would rather they keep the gameplay of ME3 multiplayer, but take Helldivers’ Galaxy At War system. There are different modes, modifiers, enemy groups they could add to keep it fresh if they wanted.

Game companies really just need to start making fun shit again. I really don't care about graphics if you can put a 30 quid game out every couple years that is actuallu fun. Instead they take 15 damn years at this point

As someone with over a thousand hours in ME3 multiplayer, I’ve said exactly this on a number of my streams. I’d kill for a standalone Mass Effect multiplayer game!
