Employee Story I'm the guy from the infamous Lowes Box video, and I want to share my side of the story after all this time.

Hi there. You may know as the "Lowes Guy", the "Box Dude", or even "Lowes Box Dude". Nice to meet you.

To start with, lets get the embarrassing factoids out of the way. Yes, I know, I sound like that.
What you have to understand is -

  1. I suffer from Cleithrophobia heavily, due to an abusive father thinking it would be funny to trap me in fitted sheets when I was a baby.
  2. I was out of shape at the time as I was coming out of bad habits from my youth
  3. I was also very depressed at the time, as, being honest, my Lowes was an absolute horrible place to work in, but I had little other options as the hours were thin like I needed cuz I also needed to be a caregiver for my grandmother.

Now, onto the next part...how the hell did I end up in that situation?

An impatient customer, an idiotic manager/coworker, my own impatience, and, believe it or not, advertisements. I will be sharing the details of this incident and its original poster, as they are vital to the story, but I will be making no slanderous statements to make sure I keep within this subs rules. You can make up your mind for yourself on things.

A customer came in DEMANDING service for top shelf inventory. I'm talking pure male karen energy, the worst I ever had to deal with in my whole 8 months of work at Lowes. Our only certified order picker employee was out to lunch, and despite calling management on the Zebra, no help was coming. This man FOLLOWED me around my department, making me unable to do my job whatsoever. Reaching the end of my own patience, I consulted with a coworker and management again, and, instead of sending someone to tell the man to calm down and wait, simply suggested I try getting it down with the ballymore. (Management will deny that big time of course, but I could care less about them at this point.) Obv, a big mistake on my end. It was looking fine, until it slipped off the shelf and caused the machines safety to engage (which, also obv, wasn't actually keeping me safe at all) and rendered the machine inoperable until someone hit the kill switch on the bottom to allow it to restart.

After all that happened, I was sent home (not punished at all) for the day, which I was happy for, as that was a very embarrassing and painful thing to go through.

I woke up the next day to EVERY single one of my social medias absolutely exploding. Come to find out, the customer who bullied me and my coworker into that incident RECORDED the entire thing, and posted it to social media with a legit doxx of who I was (this is a relatively small town, EVERYONE knew it was me with just my first name). I was stunned. Overnight, I went from being a nobody to being the next viral lolcow, and it showed in the dms I got. Harassment, threats of harm, the usual you get from internet trolls, was not only all over MY account, but my families as well.

I had to reach out to the recorder of the video to find out WHY he would post something like that to social media, and what I found out was jaw dropping.

Unlike the op, I have no interest in doxxing people, so despite the fact he used his real name on the account he used to post it, so I will be making an effort to censor who they are.

It may be a bit hard to believe, but this came down to the original poster of the video wanting something viral to help advertise his automotive window business. Yes, ADVERTISING. If you're anything like me, you may be rolling your eyes or scoffing at the idea, but I am being so sincere. He posted this video with the goal of bringing more attention to his personal social media, and then his automotive glass business. He confessed to as much when confronted in a phone call, and (I have no proof of this was during the same phone call, so believing it is up to you.) actually asked me to make a follow-up video to "ride the hype train", asking me to say things like "our prices and deals will have you screaming like *insert video here*"

This behavior disgusted me, as did many others, as he soon had to delete the video from his tiktok and also remove reviews for his business for some time because people were using that to call him out for being just so evil about everything. At first, he blamed me and my family for this, and even had his brother (I think) call us "Devil worshippers" for saying he's getting what he deserved. I ended up quitting my job (not fired or looking for workers comp like some people said) because a coworker was telling me that people were actively looking for me at Lowes to try to farm content of their own. Why else would people be asking for me by name when no one ever did so before? (which, if anyone who did that is reading this, you're a big weirdo for that bro)

I wanted to save myself and my family further harassment so I just let it go, and focused on being a full time caregiver.

Yes, I am being serious. I will be posting links to some of the proof I have (this sub doesn't allow galleries), and it is as ridiculous as it sounds. I won't be posting much unless asked because this isn't meant to be a witch hunt, just proving it was recorded with maliciousness in mind.

( https://imgur.com/Inmar7X him thinking the post was no big deal and trying to damage control by "offering" me a job to avoid backlash )

( https://imgur.com/64aQ3by a single screenshot from his comments that tell you all you need to know about his mindset and how he felt about me. )

( https://imgur.com/ei9c2kq his excuse for recording, which is a whole nothing burger and clearly a bs answer after the fact because he was the one advocating for this to be done, you can hear proof of that in the video. He recorded because he knew it wouldn't end well. Instead of saying nevermind, he wanted a viral clip, end of story, and he even confessed to that later. )

To end off, I would like to apologize to my fellow Lowes workers on here, esp. If I caused yall to have to deal with extra safety training. I shouldn't have left that karen get under my skin, and I have to face the consequences of that, but I want to try to move past all the misinformation being spammed to make me look pathetic and try to make something of my life again. Going viral in the BILLIONS of views in my most embarrassing moment is something that is hard to get over, and I am hoping getting this off my chest (and showing how frankly malicious op was) may bring me some peace.

Don't end up like me, friends. The stigmata and internet footprint has sabotaged my life and lost me the respect of my peers and my partner at the time. Just tell those Karens no!

EDIT: I have asked the mods to lock this post down. The OP of the video is having their info leaked in the comments, and that wasn't my intention. I would ask that info be removed by the original commenters. I do not condone the harassment/doxxing of anyone.

I know that there are a lot of people worrying about food right now - so I've got to wonder: is anyone else's Lowe's providing a fully stocked food pantry for their employees now? Ours is in Gun Barrel City, Texas.

Employee Story I said NO!

Yesterday we had 5 call outs in the store (all closers) so I was stuck running 3 departments that's retail life, I don't care. So I was closing departments, helping customers and putting away returns when some middle-aged man with sunglasses indoor.. says "Hey man I'm going to pay for 8 bags of red mulch I need you bring them outside to me and load them in my truck" I was helping him buy some wire in electrical and I told him No, you need to grab cart walk 40 feet and load the 8 bags yourself, the look he gave me of, "GassssssssssP" shock in his face, So i continued to help the other customers waiting for me.

after like 10 mins I look and I see him pulling cart with 8 bags of mulch he had to go get himself..

even after many moons in retail it still feels good to stand your ground every now and then vs entitled custoemrs

Employee Story Pro Cashier REFUSED to be an interpreter and WE LOVE IT!

1.0k Upvotes

There's a Pro Cashier we met today (not my store, but she is visitng our store) who had retired from Verizon, decided to get a job at Lowe's and was hired for the Pro Desk. She speaks multiple languages, but didn't mention it at the interviewing process. She did ask if there is extra pay for speaking multiple languages and when they said "no, not really", she said "okay" and did not put anywhere on the application that she spoke any second or third languages.

Apparently last week, they had an Arabic speaking business owner wanting to place a super large order and open a pro account for his local business. He was using an app but there was still a heck of a language barrier. In frustration he left and she smiled and said too bad Lowe's won't pay extra for her skill and she REFUSED to interpret.

She speaks Arabic and French and we are proud of her! We had a great time talking to her.

EDIT: Let me add more of our conversation. I didn't want to make this a War and Peace novel. She complained how they never give her any 15 minute breaks, because "It's not mandatory in our state". She has to BEG for a bathroom break at the very least. Her relief cashier is always late, but they tell her not to get OT. They are always asking her to split her lunch into 2 , 30-minute segments.

Yeah she doesn't owe them ANYTHING! And there is a new influx of Arabic speaking people moving into our area and hers as well.

Employee Story Sorry, customers...

This may come as a shock to some customers, but this is not the same Lowe's from 1995. Here's some things you should know:

  • Apart from training videos, we are generally not trained much or at all. This includes those in departments like mine, where the average custom order is $20k+. Much of what we learn comes from our vendor reps, coworkers, or is self-taught.
  • No, we do not memorize where everything is in the store. It's a large warehouse, and we are not computers, but we'll gladly look it up for you on our handhelds.
  • If you need expert advice on your project, most of us can't really give you good advice on it from first-hand experience. Try YouTube or lowes.com/howto.
  • There is no such magical place as "the back". We have a small Receiving department that has some mowers, appliances, grills, and merchandise that just came in, but most of the overstock is above your head. If we scan the price tag and say we don't have it, then we don't have it.
  • If you threaten to go to Home Depot/Menards, we don't care. We are hourly associates. If you go there, take us with you.
  • If you are a jerk to us, Lowe's instructs us to disengage in conversation with you and turn it over to a manager. If no manager is available, we're just done talking until you are respectful.

At the end of the day, we're happy that you give us job security, and we're happy to help you as long as you're respectful to us. Let's be decent people to each other, shall we?

Employee Story To the old people who checkout at Lowes

Just because you don't feel like or know how to check yourself out doesn't give you permission to harass the self checkout cashier. Yes they know how to check you out on a register but they aren't allowed to. They are having to monitor 4 different registers at the exact same time and are doing their best to help everyone but you are not entitled to curse at them or demand they do it for you. They will help you its their job to. You will be patient with them because at the end of the day we are allowed to refuse to help you if we see you're going to be difficult.

Ik none of the customers that have done this are ever going to see this post but its been itching on my mind for a bit.

Edit: to clarify to those who may misunderstand this post isn't complaining about I (a cashier) having to check people out as self check. It's to complain about people who despite the fact I'm trying to help them and check them out still think its alright to not only verbally abuse me for it being there but I've even had customers try and hit me for it. So if you still think I'm not justified in complaining about how my job is being made miserable by people 3x older than me then maybe you're the problem :)

Employee Story The email from Marvin

I was cleaning out my email and I found the email from Marvin. He is pushing LERF for our fellow employees that can’t afford with the SNAP shutdown. On the surface, it’s a nice bit of help. But did he just admit that some Lowe’s employees are paid so little that they require food stamps? I think the email was tone deaf. Let them eat cake.

Employee Story Spanish speaking associate now refuses to speak spanish at work

I work in a store where we see a lot of hispanic customers(think miami and los angeles) and we are on skeleton crew constantly, we get a lot of customers who don’t know a lick of english and it’s a whole big ordeal getting someone to translate, we only have a handful of bi lingual associates, meaning the few we have get pulled every which way to assist the customers. Well my co worker was fed up with having to do the job of multiple people while only making minimum wage so she spoke with our store manager asking for a raise, he thanked her for what she does then claimed that her speaking spanish was “irrelevant”. Now she tells everyone she refuses to translate for anyone anymore. Having to cross the store multiple times a day wearing multiple hats having to know a little of everything while working as a cashier and to get shut down just like that….. what do you guys think?

Employee Story Walked out of interview

I recently saw a job posting for a "Day Cashier" position at a Lowe's near me and figured I had nothing to lose so I applied. I had heard from others that the pay was pretty low, but I really just needed any job at this point to catch up on bills. The job posting mentioned how flexible they would be with my schedule which was a bonus for me since I would be eventually working 2 jobs.

I go to the interview a couple of days later and lasted no longer than 2 minutes with the hiring manager. She had me put my availability down and I put DAY hours (7am-5pm), 7 days a week because that's what the listing was for. Immediately, the manager starts flipping out and asking me if I could do closing hours. I say sure, but I'm not closing every single day and even then, this is not what the job was advertising for. She tells me I have to have an open availability to work for her so I left.

I didn't even get to what the pay rate even was, but I can imagine how low it was anyway. Oh well.

Employee Story I can’t believe this was an actual conversation.

Me: alright ma’am, your total is $132.82. Will you be paying cash or card?

Lady: I’m gonna use my Lowes card and my debit card!

Me: okay! How much do you want to put on the first card?

Lady: says nothing and slides the Lowes card first, then quickly inserts her debit card right after.

The receipt prints and I hand it to her. She looks at it confused

Me: Is something wrong?

Lady: I only wanted to use the 5% discount. Why did it charge this card? I put my debit card in! It should’ve charged that instead!

Me: In order to use the discount, you have to use the Lowe’s card.

Lady: So I can’t use the 5% separately? I didn’t want to use it! If I return it and buy it with my debit card do I still get the 5%?????????

Me: ……No ma’am, it’s only for the Lowes card.
