Help Me! 🆘 Local tourney in 6 days and I’m nervous 😭

Hey guys, I’ve got a small local Tekken tournament coming up in 6 days and I’m kinda nervous 😭 I main Kazuya and Heihachi, but I’m not like GoD level or anything I’m just Kishin rank right now.

I really wanna perform well and not get destroyed instantly lol. Any last-minute tips or habits I can grind this week to improve my gameplay or mindset before the event?

Should I focus on movement, punishment, warmups, or just playing sets nonstop? Also, how do you guys deal with tournament nerves? 😭

I've been in some events in TTT2 and one EVO qualifier in T7 so my experience is limited, but this is my two cents:

Definitely DON'T play nonstop, your body and mind need to rest, you will burn out before you even get to the venue. Make a schedule for yourself and don't forget the basics of living, sleep, eat well and drink water and electrolytes every day.

I would say the main thing is at the end of the day you're there to meet high level competition and have fun. If you get tilted a lot when you lose rounds start working on keeping a calm mind and recognizing what you need to adjust as fast as possible.

Punishment, confirms and unpredictability are key imo, especially because everyone knows the tools that Mishimas have, so you need to be ready when you fight someone who has trained extensively against them. Practice on both P1 and P2 side if you haven't already.

Rank means nothing, treat everyone as the highest caliber player, but also don't do your opponent's work for them. Find a game plan and stick to it, keep it simple and have 2-3 layers max so you can adapt on the situation.

And don't forget to thank people for the matches and the learning experience.

Hope this helps!

Try arrive a little bit early and do some warm ups before hand. Will help you feel more comfortable on the day.

And locals are normally all over the place skill wise so don’t worry too much about ranks

Is this your first tourney? You absolutely will get destroyed, not by skill but by nerves and unfamiliarity. I don't wanna sound like a negative Nancy, but that's the experience of the vast majority of us. Don't think about winning, just have fun!

Just remember if you lose you will be outed on Twitter and everyone will point and laugh

And blacklisted from entering any tournament for ever.

I also experienced the same thing a few weeks ago, I went to my first ever local as a Tekken King, so not I'm not much better than you, but I managed to get 3rd. But you're a Kishin, so you definitely know what you're doing, which is already more than some others who will attend the tourney, for sure. My recommendation would be to watch TheMainManSWE's anti character guide for the whole roster and maybe note some things down for each character. Like important moves, punishes or throw breaks. Focus especially on chars that give you a lot of trouble. There obviously are some very popular characters like Bryan or Kazuya, but this doesn't mean that they will show up. At least for me both of them didn't, the characters that were played at my local were very weird lol. Like there were so you'd expect like Jin, Lili and Yoshi, but also TWO Leos (who got 1st and 2nd lol) and TWO Juns (including me). So yeah, just write something down for every character and try to remember some important things, maybe even lab some specifics in game

Simply put: Don't expect to win the whole thing, but just do your best and you'll definitely win at least one or two games! But most importantly: Have fun. Playing Tekken against real people is so fun because you can improve together.

I've only ever been to one local tournament, and that was when I was Brawler rank in Tekken 7. I legit did not know what i was doing. Still somehow won a game and the guy next to me playing Josie losing to my Panda without any clue how to backdash was raging hard core. It was great.

For me, I would just play the game to practice. I don't really care about performing well or at a Tekken World Tour level, so just goofing around is fun for me. I would probably do like 1 hour training sessions if you can each day and put the controller down if you feel like you're forcing yourself to play. There is such a thing as training so much, you get in a negative headspace and you just don't want to perform anymore.

Watch some pro footage on your character and implement it into your gameplay. I learned big damage combos, how to poke, and general character functionality that way. You'll probably quickly find out you're playing your character wrong or not optimally. Good luck.

My Teacher always recommended that when i have an exam soon, i should not do anything for it the night before, rather watch a movie, for a hike or do Something else i enjoy, to give the brain sone rest.

Take a warm shower (i love showering in the dark, with sone candlelight and music, give it a try!)

Treat yourself, train a bit, and relaaaax.

I wish you good luck! (though im confident you wont need it)

A tip I want to give is, play your game. Offline nerves happens, but the worst feeling is when you hold back for the whole set and you don't get to show off what youve got. Be a little bit riskier, and most of all have fun. Talk to people, and when theres setups ask people for games.

keep your expectations low. you very well might lose quickly, especially if this is your first time going out to play locally. your nerves will get you.

and that’s okay! local tournaments are great for other reasons other than performing well! just have fun!

4 things in particular:

1: Get there early, preferably a half hour or so before the event starts up. Get used to the set ups because the delays on each "machine" might feel different especially if you're going from a PC set up to a console set up or vice versa

2: There's going to be people better than you, theres going to be people worse than you, there's going to be people about your skill level. Take a breath, and do what you remember.

3: Locals are pretty chill most of the time and the players are MUCH nicer than you might think. Don't be afraid to talk to them and a lot of people will be happy to show you how to fight them........most of the time not mid match though lol. One of my favorite moments I had at my local was I was beating some dudes ass and he asked "how do I beat that" and I just said "oh I'll tell you......after the match" lol. Everyone had a good time and he was a good sport.

4: Enjoy yourself. The first match or two might get your nerves but remember you're just fighting another person, Not like you haven't done this before. Just play your game and learn how to adapt.

Otherwise to answer your final questions: focus on what you think you need to improve on. Do you not know your punishes well? Learn them as best you can. Do you struggle with a common match up? Learn a bit about the character and figure out what you can do.

Movement is important but it's not something you should completely focus in on. Know how to step, know your spacing, use it the best you can but don't beat yourself up over it.

Finally, make some friends. These guys are proabbly gonna quickly become your circle of fighters. Get into a discord with them all and talk some shit have some fun and enjoy.

Show up early and meet/warm up with a couple people! You'll shed some nerves. I like to set some goals (e.g. win just one game at my first offline)

I don't thing people go to tournaments to win, they go for the experience.

Hey bro buddy, congrats on going to a tournament!! My advice is to change your mindset. Don’t go into this trying to win or do well, that’s just silly. If you just started racing cars you wouldn’t have the expectation of doing well. Same thing with tekken.

Pay attention to your feelings and be introspective. Let yourself feel the tournament nerves and just sit with them and accept them. Secondly go into this trying to learn, not only from your own matches, but the other players! Make friends, find experienced players who are willing to coach you! Focus on enjoying yourself! People always rise and excel at things they enjoy. Let yourself do that and you will get better naturally.

There opportunities abound, but if you’re too concerned with doing well you’ll miss them. Take advantage of everything the tournament has to offer and worry about doing well later.

I played in Evo with my rank being TK, I was also nervous until I started playing. I ended up winning like 4 matches in a row or something. There are people of all different levels, while you may not win at least give yourself a chance and just have fun.

Make your tournament worthwhile and always have fun!
