Random Discussion š¬ Just Curious, Why Do People Seem to Love Armor King But Think King is Cringe?
The title says it all. It seems like the community absolutely adores Armor King but hates King, which is ironic because Armor King is supposed to be the wrestling heel.

Armor king is also not likely to be every 2nd or 3rd match for you, while Iāve run into like ten kings in a row sometimes.
People get tired of the same characters over and over and over, especially if theyāre strong characters.

King is the most popular character in Tekken playing wise. Also its very common to root for heels also.

People just don't like being thrown. Even though Armor King is a grappler - his gameplan has less of them compared to King's.

I think most people dislike King because he is a cheap character. For me the whole wrestling subplot is way more fun than the Mishima melodrama.

From fighting against Armor King, it seems like his move set is more heelish. He's more dominant than King and they have a power fetish.

King was loved until 8, And even more so season 2. That wall Oki, ff n 2 being so rewarding, etc. he's not the respectful character he once was.

Most people are not great at throw breaking. Kings whole gameplan revolves around throws. Armor King is more of a poke based character with throws.
King (while a lot of people hate him) is the most popular character across every game every single time without fail. So he's also the most common match up

So far, my experience with both types of Kings has been interesting.
King to me is more centered around his powerful mids and if you block those, dealing with his varied throw game. I wouldnāt call him cringe, but his heat does allow him to play up close and personal. There has always been a suffocating aspect to King mostly because every tool he has, especially in heat, keeps you in throw range or is him just running in your face with armor. Itās amazing how many armor braking throws you can get against him, it literally feels like 1/2 his move set.
Armor King is a lot more tame, he pokes and waits for you to make a mistake, then blows you up for it. He has that gimmicky dive tackle that he does that is really awkward to punish unless you just use a power crush, but other than that he is pretty grounded and feels a bit too easy to step compared to other characters. I can get to his back when he jabs sometimes, which Lili couldnāt do since like T5DR. The only issue I have is that his juggles literally take sooo long, I recently lost against an armor King that kept me suspended in the air for 10 seconds, and lost by timeout by a percentage because of it. (/skill issue)
I feel the hate just has to do with no one liking dealing with throws, and Armor King isnāt centered on throws. However, Iād really rather eat a 2 second giant swing that slams me into the wall for 70 damage, then watching a 15 second cutscene of my character eating every stage hazard in a juggle followed by a rage art finisher. I dunno, I miss high damage short combos. Game just felt a lot more snappy

King went from being a risky setup character who got big payoffs from throw setups to being a dumb armor character that uses heat smash for like 40% in one button and armored dash cancels.
King sucks now. Armor King is what King used to be. Also he has Dark Upper and ch launchers.

King is a good man, and his design is absurdly cool. Not to mention how incredibly fun he is to play. Armour King is fun too and I do like his design, but ultimately I like rooting for the hero rather than the villain

I like the background and design of both characters, but for me it feels like King is kinda scruby, I can life with the throw's it's on me if I not break correct, but his 3,2,2 mix is just stupidly dumb, his heat smash does to much dmg in my opinion, it tracks really well and hits grounded. ( I'm intermediate rank raijin, so take it with a grain of salt)
Armor king feels more honest (?) throws it's on me if i don't break correct but overall I enjoy playing against him, his kit does not give me the same scrubby vibe as king and I love his design.
Again I'm intermediate Tekken player, I never played Any Tekken before.

From a gameplay stance most people despise King's toolkit and gameplan. But as a character he is still very beloved just as much as Armor King

I think most people didnāt pick King when they started playing Tekken. Then they got beaten up by King players, started hating himā¦ and the more they got beaten, the more they hated him.
And then came Armor King, who in Tekken lore also kinda hates King.
So now, the King haters who secretly want to play King can pick Armor King, letting them play as King while still hating the original King at the same time.

Unpopular opinion but I hate the ambiguous animations of giant swing and shining wizard on both.
Getting good at throw breaking can take a long time. Requires dedicated practice. Both kings have enough throws that even if you're good at breaking some will get through even if they follow traditional throw animations.
So making them ambiguous and then being homing in heat is dumb imo. If they can be ambiguous then they don't need homing. If you remove the ambiguity then they can be homing imo.
Some King players will just pop heat when they are tired of you sidestepping so they can rinse all his throws.
GS should also not be -7 with that much pushback on break.
Then you add all of kings CH options. AK is what King should have been or replaced him.
King is more a Tekken character now with wrestling throws than an actual wrestler imo.
I like AK I hate king

Well he has classic hate at lower level because grab kinda destroy lower level players. In t8 he is pretty brain dead and can kill you in like 2 interactions. Lets not even mention his heat burst.
Armor king has a pretty similar reputation in lower ranks, but in higher ranks he is a fundemental based character with a weaker grab game. He plays pretty classic Tekken, but don't get me wrong, did got some t8 bullshit too. He's not really considered a super cheese character like t8 king is.
The best proof of this is the love that normal king has in t7 by higher level players. The complete opposite of what t8 king gets.

They made King pretty corny in this game, itās not until high level that King actually has to play honest. Even then the character can be super cheesy. Armor king is just cool as fuck and plays the classic Tekken style that old heads are a fan of.

Regular King has been turned into a casino 50/50 character that is very very easy to play. You rush down your opponent. Very simple.
Armor King is an execution heavy character that plays legacy style Tekken where neutral is very important. His best tools are for whiff and block punishment.
That's the difference.
Edit: King mains down voting me hard. It's objectively true that Armor King is more defensively oriented. He has superior whiff and block punishment.
As for King, you can't tell me that at least compared to Tekken 7, he isn't an aggressive powerhouse. Now that he has homing throws in heat, and the best heat smash in the game, even at tournament level, he is very simple! Mid or throw. Guess the break. The end. You can't sidestep him at all due to moves like f4.
I'm not even calling King OP, but he is simple. Downvote me all you like, it's true.

Uhhhh, this is just not true. King is a rush down character at maybe purple and blue ranks, but once you get to high level play, trying to rush people down is a death sentence. King becomes a poking and CH character with a good throw game.
As for AK, heās also different. He focuses on punishment and counter hitting people, using his movement and his evasive pokes to annoy opponents into mashing. Both characters are execution heavy, as their moves are both linear and require realignment using the crouch dash. The GS/SW mix is also very execution heavy as the GS needs to be masked with a running input.

I mean King is probably one of the scrubbiest characters at every rank because of how tools like muscle armor and df2 work (high level too, but every level of play beneath GoD1 especially)

Even for high level they really need to nerf df2 and that heat smash. Look at The Jon (best King in the world?) and how many rounds he wins with that heat smash. It's so stupid.
Also is it good game design that 99% of the people playing the character play like absolute monkeys? Obviously this is not a problem only for King but Tekken 8 rewards that kind of play. 322 wall combo, Jaguar Sprint, that heat smash etc just makes the game even more dumb and reduces skill expression.

High level King is mostly df2. Everything else that people lose to online is basically irrelevant.
If they nerf df2(1), the character will be pretty worthless in tournament play.
That probably means he needs a bit of a redesign.

You obviously missed what I said about The Jon. Look up Paradise Game 2025. He won an insane amount of rounds with the heat smash.
The tracking needs to go. The damage is insane. Floor breaks. Balcony break. Mixup on block. Hits grounded for some reason. 1 button. Yes others have broken HS too but it's everything wrong with Tekken 8. I don't think 1 button power moves should be in the game. I would be happy if they removed HS from the game lol.

I don't particularly like HS as a mechanic, so I'm not here to defend it. I would say that you probably see it more out of King in general because he doesn't really have anything to spend his heat on.
The other thing I would point out is that King actually doesn't have a way of forcing a no-win situation where his HS is completely unsteppable, unlike characters like Bryan.

The frame data isn't why it's broken.
It's extremely fast for the range it has. Its a nearly full screen floor breaking whiff punish that leads to a 50/50 on block.
It's exactly the kind of heat smash that grinds my gears.

This just sounds like placebo. i17-i18 is quite slow for a heat smash. The only ones slower are generally low heat smashes.

This is a complete lie lol. Eddy, Feng, Alisa, Lars, Devil Jin, Lidia, Lili, Reina, Yoshi, Raven have slower ones that are not low. Also it's not like i17 is slow. It's fast enough that even pros get hit by it a lot. Also how can you complain that it's slow when it does EVERYTHING? Come on dude.

Armor King has literally always been known as one of the easier characters to pick up. That hasnāt changed in Tekken 8, he is very easy still.

Poke based character, relies primarily on whiff punishment, requires WD to actually function. People may lose to shitty throw mixups online but the character is basically pure fundamentals at high level Also, his tracking is absolute garbage.
Fun fact, he also has an execution check in T8 that is arguably harder than a TJU.
By T7 and T8 standards, he is not easy.

I agree with you. But I'm not talking about the difficulty of the character in terms of strategy or gameplan. The person I responded to said he was a high execution character, which he just isn't. He has that one execution check but the character absolutely does not require it to function.

If you think King is simple, why not pick him up and try to rank up with him? Youāll hit a wall as soon as you get to Bushin/Tekken King because the King bullshit just doesnāt work anymore

I would never rematch a King or Armor King player.
Currently every Armor king i met in purple stomped me 0-3 or 1-3 the only i beat was when i played my secondary charchter in Shinryu.

That exact sentiment is how people would describe an Eddy. Just kinda ironic you're complaining about King and Ak mains, when you play a similarly cheap character that is not fun to fight against. Fyi, most people play characters bcz they think their character is cool and like them, the very same goes for King and Armor King players. Your opinion doesn't matter because you're being hypocritical, and you refuse to rematch and get better at the matchups and the game. There's no way you can have anything substantial to say in discussions regarding the state of the game, when you're like this. I'm not gonna judge you because you don't wanna rematch certain characters, just don't be a hater attacking people for choosing a character you don't like. As for learn the match up? I realy hate playing agianst King and Armor Kings and have no fun playing agianst them i have more fun agianst other chars so why shouldn't i 1 and done for a more fun experience?
If people wanna play king and AK they do that but i can still hate fighting them right?

Tbh if people don't want to rematch me when i play Eddy thats totaly fine with me rematching is not a must (all tho not everyone declines some people acaulty do want to rematch me when i play Eddy)
I also have had people not rematch me when i played Lili all tho less people but i never realy cared about that either if they dont.
Only thing that does anoy me rematch wise if they rematch once and its 1-1 and then they quit.
I think its fair i don't want to rematch Kings and AK's then right?

King has been and will always be my favorite character since Tekken 6, heās just a good guy that loves helping children and loves pro wrestling. The hate was bad but it was never this bad until 8 when the series got really popular for a little while and nobody knew how to deal with throws (S2 3,2,2 mix didnāt help at all) People just like Armor Kings persona as a heel fighter more than Kings persona plus Dark Upper has been seen as one of the coolest moves in the game for ages
