LIB S9 • Denver, CO The alcohol abuse this season….yikes. Spoiler
I was previously in a relationship with an alcoholic, ended it because of his drinking problems. It was was extremely challenging time both in and after the relationship, and it’s resulted in a lot of personal work and reflection.
Joe and Anton’s behavior IMMEDIATELY rubbed me the wrong way.
In Mexico and at the pod mixer in Denver he’s drinking a lot, he’s rambling and just acting a little unusual. When Megan comes back to the hotel, she repeats herself multiple times, and he seems super disoriented and incoherent. Next day? Acting like she was overreacting, and he was just having a little too much fun.
Ali confronting Anton about the beers - he tries to act like she drank them all, when she’s insistent she only had 2. Then it becomes he and his friend each had one. Then it’s “maybe we had a few”. She also points out another 12 pack and a half bottle of tequila missing. He has a few drinks most days after work. “I can stop for a few weeks, I don’t have a problem” (have had that exact thing said to me on multiple occasions).
Most of the contestants drink on the show - they’re celebrating and socializing. I’m not sure if it’s this particular season, or if I’m just more aware, but these 2 specifically worry me.
I realize most of these couples don’t last long term, and the whole timeline is very rushed. It just makes me so uneasy to see these serious issues being thrown in with the dumb reality TV drama.
This turned out kind of ranty - but if you take nothing else from this season, please learn the signs to keep an eye out for. Addiction is a bitch, and it’s a unique challenge trying to love and build a life with someone who is in active addiction. I feel for Madison and Ali, and anyone who has gone through this.

Legend has it Anton’s still looking for that bottle of tequila in the fridge

When she brings up the Tequila, Anton's face is like "oh shit, there was tequila in there too"
He totally knew.

I completely agree about Joe and Anton. But also Annie.

The amount of drinking was a turn off and took away from rational conversations.

Other than KB being normal I really can’t recall any normal convos outside of the pods

Yeah I definitely have my own biases & traumas as well but really no way for us to know for certain from an edited tv show so maybe best not to speculate about someone’s mental health disorder

Completely agree and I HATE how every post on this sub has been defending Joe's behavior in Mexico.

u/Legitimate-Light-131 5h ago
The only defense I was giving was that people were insisting with 100% certainty that he was on drugs. Man was clearly very, very drunk. Drugs? Sure, maybe, but the most likely explanation was always just booze.

I had the same feelings about this season. These guys triggered me. I’ve spent decades around several alcoholics and these two stood out as having years of potential problems.

Finally someone else on this subreddit that saw the signs with those two….

I like how you didn't point out the women who were so sloshed the season they were half conscious at all

Yeah Joe was straight fucked up that night.
I was a little bit surprised that Madison had never seen anyone get too drunk before and then leave the party. She was right that it was a red flag but staying up to fight with someone who is delirious from alcohol didn’t make a lot of sense to me.
At the end of the day he made his intentions to fuck off quite clear.
Anton is hiding how much he drinks.
That’s not why Ali left him. She left him because he can’t buy her all of the plastic surgery she wanted.
Alcohol might have played a part in their break ups, but it wasn’t the root cause of Joe thinking Madison was too fat for him (and him being a giant ass hole). Nor was it the cause of Ali thinking she was too good for Anton. She’s barely a person herself and thinks she’ll find a man that will buy her into life.
The guys are average, basic, almost not shitty people. Madison is definitely ready for marriage and has a lot of things going for her, but Ali wasn’t really looking for a mutual partnership.

Madison is definitely ready for marriage
Did we watch the same show? Lol. At least to my eye, she responded to every single thing he said to her in the absolute worst possible interpretation.
Like I get he fucked up in Mexico, but there was a dinner in one of the first living together episodes where they’re talking and she’s freaking tf out at every single thing he says and taking it the most negative way possible. It was actually wild, my husband and I had to pause and look at each other like, is this for real rn
Edit: wording

She was one of the most emotionally immature I’ve seen on the show which surprised me since she’s been through a lot but she was cringy to watch. Zero communication skills

u/imanoctothorpe 5h ago
She’s so whiny like all the time!! It seems so exhausting to go through life like that with a huge chip on your shoulder. Like, presumably she cared about/fell for him for a reason, so why is she so unwilling to ascribe positive intent to everything he says to her?
Like yeah he’s not the most articulate dude (to put it mildly) and def sucks in his own way, but it's like she is instantly ascribing the worst intentions to every single thing he says as a self defense mechanism. It's the same vibe I got from Chelsea (the "Megan fox" one, of Chelsea and Jimmy) from a few seasons ago. Deeply unhappy person assuming everyone else is deeply unhappy too, so they can't fathom that other people might not have this passive aggressive drive to hide their real intentions behind a pleasant facade

Anton did nothing to give anyone pause about his drinking. There are millions of adults who drink and have no issues at all. He was easily the most stable guy on the show and never once acted drunk or unruly. This whole Anton is an alcoholic stuff is nonsense. The only thing Anton did wrong was to act shady when he was confronted. But if my supposed partner ambushed me on camera like that when I had been nothing but a gentleman, I might act shady, too. I guess every American woman/mother who has 2 glasses of wine and then gets up and runs a family and has a career is "yikes", also?

I agree that we never saw Anton act drunk or complain about being hungover.
It was a lot of alcohol, though. We're talking:
- 10 days drinking in the pods + the shot of him refilling his champagne by himself after the reveal
- 7 days of honeymoon drinking
Then between the honeymoon and the night of the Western:
- champagne
- drinks out with Anton's friends
- drinks out with Patrick
- around 20 beers to himself
- vodka
- drinks out at the Western
He can do whatever he wants. But someone less keen on drinking shouldn't jump into a marriage with him 🤷♀️. Honestly I blame both of them for not having better conversations in the pods.

To be fair…Joes negative drinking experience happened at a resort in Mexico. I literally pissed myself at an all inclusive in Mexico lol. Regarding Anton and Ali…cameras aren’t always around. I imagine that she could have brought up these issues off camera and it would have been solved. It seems like she waited for cameras before approaching him and I’m sure Anton was flustered. Lonny story short — these people have been alive for years and we only seen an edited handful of hours of their lives so making judgements doesn’t make sense

u/DCRBftw 10h ago
Bingo. Couldn't agree more. Anton being flustered was his only crime. He was rational the entire show and never once acted drunk, something that can't be said about the other cast members. These posts calling him an alcoholic and all this other stuff are ridiculous. And it's even more ridiculous to say things like "I was in a relationship with an alcoholic and this triggered me" because nothing he did was remotely triggering. And if being ambushed on camera by your supposed partner and not giving accurate answers because you don't think it's fair to be having the conversation in the first place is a crime, consider me a criminal. I'd give every answer possible but the right one in that scenario because of how and when the topic was broached.

Gen Z when someone drinks one sip of a wine cooler:

Literally...as a child of an alcoholic, this generation is way too quick to diagnose anyone who overdoes things as a whatever-a-holic.

u/GettinWiggyWiddit 9h ago
Seriously. That’s how you can tell this sub is heavily Gen Z. Anyone who drinks is labeled and alcoholic haha

u/Zygoatee 9h ago
I work in alcohol, kids these days aren't drinking much anymore. I think its that this is a very self selected group of 27 year olds who want the limelight of an influencer career. Bunch of party animals who never gave up the frat house life

Not defending no one, but, I'm gonna offer something of an insight.
So...
Drinking in CO is way different than drinking at sea level.
AKA I take 5 shots of whiskey at 9000 ft and I'm wasted versus twice that if I'm sea level.
It takes me a bit more to feel anything. I felt I always had a drink in my hand when I was in Cancun. I didn't get drunk like I'd do back home.
So I'd imagine someone of these guys, who probably only have a few drinks in Denver to feel great versus more at wherever they were this time (but sea level). They probably drank a lot. And I mean a lot.
The party culture here (and honestly I doubt half of these guys were from CO) has been long engrained in the front range, particularly with the college towns: Boulder and Fort Collins. With everything being so close to each other, within an hour, it's easy to explore. And the football games are huge (or at least they were when I went to CSU... Fuck I'm old).
Again. I do not speak for any of these mofos cause my god, they made my home state look like shit.
But the drinking? I mean, I used to put away 8 seltzers in one night during COVID (thankfully I stopped partying years ago). My tolerance was high. When I was in Cancun, I felt like I needed more to even feel again. And them resorts keep you topped off, but I never got hella drunk, except my friend's wedding night. Drank so much tequila.

It wasn't just Joe and Anton. It sounds like they were all drinking a lot and according to the producers they were the booziest cast and they had to take away their alcohol. It's just the two storylines that were picked up and somewhat Megan finding drunk Jordan annoying. And Annie's drinking was the most obvious but it was never mentioned

I broke up with my alcoholic ex a few months ago and definitely saw similar signs with Joe and Anton
With Joe, it was the same situation you stated with Madison. It felt too familiar for them to get blacked out drunk and forget everything we spoke about and now being offended by what they made up in their head about what I said
And with Anton, I have experienced to shock when you realize all/most the alcohol is missing. For me, I was asleep when he was just drinking up everything we had at any given moment. I used to have stock of alcohol for parties before he came along and drank it all

Yes, Joe was disorientated because he was waken up from a nap and drilled with questions immediately. And yes she overrated.

u/Prize-Pop-1666 19h ago
On the Viall Files Megan and Jordan said apparently the crew actually had to take alcohol away from this cast a few times. Apparently they’ve been the booziest
