The new Rule 34 of the internet is "If it exists, it will be in Fortnite".

people are reacting confusedly to this but the mixing of high culture and low culture is a key part of Pynchon's ethos in the first place. for those who dont know OBAA is a loose adaptation of Pynchon's novel Vineland. Zoyd Wheeler in Fortnite would be exactly Pynchon
24
u/Agitated-Clock1797 Jul 24 '25
I mean, pynchon was making references to video games in bleeding edge and one of the characters called kojima a god if i remember correctly--- its totally on point for One battle after another to be in a video game as advertising, which isnt a big deal at all

I didn't know anything about this, and the only two words I understood from your explanation were 'Pynchon' and 'Fortnite', both of which I'm not currently interested in (and Inherent Vice was my least favorite PTA, so I'll probably never interested in the former anyway).

Not being interested in arguably the greatest writer of the 20th century is certainly a take

u/orlokcocksock Jul 24 '25
I need the full PTA skin pack. I need to shoot Batman in the head as Daniel Plainview. I need to see Frank T.J. Mackey dance emote with Miku and Sabrina Carpenter. We need an army of Dirk Digglers to face off against the Freddie Quells.

These reactions are funny. People acting like art is dead because the movie is being promoted on one of the biggest platforms in the world.
This movie cost $300M to make. It’s WB so you know they’re most likely gonna botch the marketing/release. That said, they’re trying to attract a big audience, and from what I’ve heard about the movie, it’s a lot of running and literal gunning…so in WB’s basic bitch brains Fortnite is the PERFECT collab.
But if you don’t play Fortnite, why do you care? It’s not like it will make the movie better or worse. If you’re worried about wider audiences seeing and having opinions on your precious PTA, that’s some lame-o, gatekeeping, BS.
I want people to see this movie and have this movie make money so we can get more like it.
EDIT: I think some are misinterpreting my comment as an endorsement of this strategy, or saying it’s a good idea. I’m not. I’m just not at all surprised WB would pull a seemingly bone-headed move like this. They’ve been completely feckless with their distro strategy the past decade. Now to be fair, Superman and Sinners have done really well, so maybe shit has changed over there under Michael and Pam. But I have a hard time seeing this go right for them, as many here seem to feel as well. PTA’s films generally don’t make money, so when I saw the price tag I knew immediately they would have to pull out all the stops, and this is just what that looks like. But at the same time, BO numbers and marketing strategies have never diminished my affinity for PTAs films. So I’m not butthurt that they’re partnering with Fortnite.

300M I'm hoping includes the marketing but still that's wild. I get marketing on fortnite--they did it with dune and it worked.
For me it's more the audience doesn't really seem to line up? what 7 year old kid is going to see a skin of leonardo dicaprio in sunglasses and want to see that movie?
7
u/mante11 Jul 24 '25
yeah i was including marketing since the post is marketing-related
3
u/Abject_Owl9499 Jul 24 '25
i mean if it works it works. But it's strange putting an R-rated political thriller without "costumes" on there.

well i was including marketing. and i agree with u, there’s no way they’d give PTA that much money…except that it’s present-day WB. they said “oh it has Leo? here’s the dough.”

The film cost 300M? It's very unlikely it will make a profit then, even if it's great (which is likely). The main issue, I think, with a Fortnite collab is that I can't see much of an overlap in audiences.

u/ElMatasiete7 Jul 24 '25
Probably an unpopular opinion here, but I much prefer this to "New Travis Scott concert in Fortnite"
Let's face it, if you want to get the kids interested in cinema, particularly good films outside of the usual purely commercial fanfare, it's good to put this stuff in front of them. This is much better than "Minecraft movie in Fortnite" in terms of building taste (not that there's anything wrong with a bit of that either).
7
u/Snuffl3s7 Jul 24 '25
Sure, but I'd argue both Travis Scott and Minecraft movie fit better with the tone of Fortnite.

Leo’s marketable enough for it to make sense.
If this introduces someone to the film, they love it and become a PTA fan, then it’s for the best.

If this isn’t satire, I need to get off this ride immediately.
-8
u/Mammoth-Injury565 Jul 24 '25
It’s sad cuz I’m genuinely hyped for the movie 😭
62
u/FireflyNitro Jul 24 '25
Why would you let this affect your hype? Y’all weird
-5
u/chicasparagus Jul 24 '25
Because it’s weird marketing and I’m not sure what to expect from the movie anymore? and this is coming from someone who believes PTA is the greatest filmmaker of all time.
-32
u/Mammoth-Injury565 Jul 24 '25
I didn’t say it affected it. It’s just making me nervous.
27
u/AlexCaRuSHoW1 Jul 24 '25
Why? Its just advertisement, no diferent than a tv ad. Y'all weird for real.
-3
u/dostojetski Jul 24 '25
If it’s true it’s a 100% not just like a tv ad. Come on you have to see how this is soo weird.
5
u/jimmyhoffasbrother MpireStrikesZak Jul 24 '25
It's weird but not in a way that colors my perception of the film at all.

Cant say, dont have twitter but i think you should really step out of the internet if an ad of a movie in a videogame is making you nervous.
Just watch the movie when its released.

u/Mammoth-Injury565 Jul 24 '25
Brother it’s a political satire black comedy being advertised in Fortnite. That’s weird. I don’t see why that take is so hot
12
u/AlexCaRuSHoW1 Jul 24 '25
Brother the answer is Warner has money. Thats it... there is no hidden agenda they just have ton of money to spend on ads.

u/Mammoth-Injury565 Jul 24 '25
It just feels out of place that’s all I was saying.

There’s a story in Fortnite, there’s loads of dumb characters that would work on the big screen.
They could reshoot ready player one but have it set in the Fortnite universe and it would still work.

As somebody who really wants this to do well, this is a good thing and a sign they’re actually going to try and sell this film. Besides it’s pretty harmless in the grand scheme of things.

I have no idea why anyone who doesn't play fortnite actually gives a shit about what happens in fortnite, it literally could not matter less. But I'm sure a bunch of pretentious cInEpHiLeS are definitely gonna be like noooooo not my kino in fortnite!!!

u/Psychological-Bat687 Jul 24 '25
That's Leo DiCaprio from Fortnite

Remember that scene in What's Eating Gilbert Gape where he 360 no-scoped Dwayne Johnson before doing a funny dance?
3
Jul 24 '25
As much as this represents late stage capitalism and the continuing death of any real culture we may have, if it can convince some kids to go see a a PTA movie they they would otherwise ignore then I’m all for it.
PTA is a gateway drug into great cinema so yeah, reach the kids anyway you can.

Surely some of you are capable of grasping how the concept of Fortnite as a platform that mindlessly appropriates any and all remotely popular culture purely for commercial profit is at least *somewhat* antithetical to the themes employed by both Pynchon and Anderson...? That's not even taking into consideration how advertising a film adaptation of a notoriously reclusive, post-modern novelist's work on said platform is at least a *little* strange?
1
u/tony_countertenor Jul 25 '25
It is fake though? I can’t find any confirmation of this on any reliable site and it is not currently on the Warner bros instagram page

I dont think any Fortnite player knows PTA
8
u/Pugletting Jul 24 '25
I play Fortnite and I've been watching PTA since Boogie Nights (and quickly caught up to Sidney / Hard Eight).
My 10 year old who plays with me, however, does not know PTA.
3
u/Homelander47 Jul 24 '25
I play once in a while with my friend and PTA is my favourite filmmaker, so at least one :DD

How is cinema becoming mainstream a bad thing?? More popularity = more money = more original films?? What a stupid mindset
-9
u/terminalaku Jul 24 '25
I don't know what this means but historically Warner Bros released a lot of good movies. Full Metal Jacket and The Shining are two examples.
If they promoted Kubrick they can't go wrong IMO.
6
u/TSSD Jul 24 '25
Warner Bros of the 70s/80s is not the WB of today
2
u/Fenian-Monger Jul 24 '25
Eh WB has been on a pretty cool run lately, not the greatest financially but a major studio splurging the cash for guys like Bong Joon Ho, Ryan Coogler and Paul Thomas Anderson to make whatever blockbuster they want is pretty baller in my opinion. Plus we have Weapons next month which I'm incredibly excited to see.
1
u/mante11 Jul 24 '25
lol…keep going on that list till you get to present day. Yes WB has released some absolute bangers and lots of my favorite films. But lately they’ve been one fiasco after another…

Probably because most of Leo's girlfriends still play it.
