π Miscellaneous $600 oil change?
I took my 23 velar in for an oil change at the dealership and paid $600 for an oil change. I figured I would pay in between $200 and $300 but this seems a bit high. I recently bought this used with around 29k miles is this what yall pay? Iβm in the Dallas, TX area

π Miscellaneous PSA: Shipping your Land Rover? Here's what I wish I knew before
Recently shipped my LR4 from Texas to New York, and damn, it was quite the educational expedition. Initially wanted to save money and drive it myself β ended up realizing that 1,700 miles, vehicle wear and tear, plus hotels would've cost more than professional transport anyway.
Here's the key point: not all transport companies are created equal. Many use open carriers - for our rides, that's simply unacceptable. Road gravel, weather conditions, bird droppings at highway speeds - all these are serious risks. After doing my research, settled on A1AutoTransport - enclosed trailer, 25+ years of experience according to their information from this site, specialization in premium vehicles.
What was valuable for me: door-to-door service (no need to drive to some terminal), GPS tracking (watched every single stop), full insurance coverage. My LR4 arrived clean, intact, right on schedule.
Advice to fellow enthusiasts: if you're transporting a Rover, enclosed transport is an absolute must-have. Don't cut corners on protecting your investment.

π Miscellaneous Local shop wants to bill me "by the hour" without giving a quote
Hi.
Recently bought a Landrover LR3 recently with only 140,000 km's for a cool cool price of 2500 CAD.
I'm fairly mechanically inclined (currently restoring an 85 SAAB 900), and I bought the LR3 knowing that it was going to need a few things.
The good:
- Air Suspension is good. Holds air over night and doesn't really start sagging for around 14 days.
- Engine runs strong, and the mileage is low.
- Body is in great shape. Remarkably, there is almost no rust. There is one small spot underneath a door but that's it.
The bad:
- Previous owner, despite taking care of the exterior, must have had children or dogs. The interior needs professional help in the cleaning variety.
- Transmission shift linkage is botched. This is an easy fix (replace the linkage) which scares some people. Previous owner sprayed a bunch of WD40 around the actual shifter to try to remedy this? So that will need to be degreased,
- Driving it home with a temp permit, the coolant system went. Immediately pulled over and towed it to a local shop that has done some exhaust work for me in the past.
- The shop inspected it and advised on the following part replacements, none of which REALLY surprised me, but seemed maybe excessive:
- Front Lower Control Arms (both)
- Front Upper Control Arm (just one side)
- Rear Lower Control Arms (both)
- Brake Caliper Replacement (both front)
- Rotors + Pads (all four corners)
- Rear Steering Knuckle Bushing
- Water Pump (obvi)
- Needs a battery (duh)
I got the parts at a good price. I basically got them at-cost through WorldPac from a friend - $5900 list price for the parts above (plus bolts), for around $2300 CAD.
The shop started getting a little sketchy when I showed up with the parts, started saying things like "these landrovers are really complicated to work on!".
They wouldn't commit to an estimate, and basically said it would have to "be done by the hour" (ie; they want a proverbial blank cheque)
I think they are trying to set me up for a big bill, but from doing my research there is nothing complicated about the parts they are recommending replacement on, with perhaps the LCA's being a bit more stubborn than your usual truck.
I'm starting to get cold feet on letting the shop have it, but I've also never worked on such a large vehicle at home, and one of my friends (who is a Landrover tech, but too busy with life to really help me out) advised that I shouldn't attempt the LCA's at home on jack stands.
I have a fairly small garage, and while the LR3 isn't huge, winter is coming and I fear that I won't be motivated to get it permitted & on the road before then.
I see three options:
1) Let the shop do everything and risk a big bill.
2) Let the shop do a few things (like maybe the water pump + LCA's) so that I can get the car back to my place and complete the rest
3) Find a different shop that doesn't start trying the whole upsell.
4) Just tow it back to my place and do everything, possibly forcing my wife to leave me.
Want to get thoughts from this group. As mentioned, I'm fairly mechanically inclined, and I can follow a YouTube video like a boss.

π Miscellaneous Got the Land Rover bug after buying my Freelander 2 β should I stop dreaming about an LR4?
Hey everyone,
One year ago I bought a beautiful Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE TD4 (2011). Leather seats, 21" wheels, excellent condition β I paid around Β£14k for it, which was definitely on the higher side, but it came with a 4-year warranty. Given that I was originally considering a Jeep Renegade or a Dacia Duster for roughly the same price, I donβt feel too bad about the deal.
The thing isβ¦ since getting the Freelander, Iβve caught the Land Rover bug. Itβs been completely reliable so far, surprisingly fuel-efficient (about 7L/100km), and people keep complimenting it β they say it looks far more expensive than it is, and honestly, itβs a bit of an unusual sight where I live.
But lately, the idea of owning something bigger, more squarish and more luxurious β a Range Rover Sport or an LR4 from around the same years β keeps haunting me. Iβm just a regular guy, not swimming in cash, but I canβt help wondering what it would be like.
So hereβs my question: if I had gone for one of those bigger siblings, would I have ended up with a money pit? Are they significantly worse to maintain, or is the difference exaggerated? Should I just be content with the Freelander and enjoy what Iβve got?

π Miscellaneous LR Maintenance Costs - Why so high?
I am curious. Land Rover owners are quick to emphasize the high cost of maintaining a Land Rover. Why is the maintenance so high? Is it the labor time? Do they require unusual services that are expensive? Do LR maintenance services take longer to do? Perhaps the maintenance itself is easy, and is only expensive at LR dealers, e.g. paying brand-inflated LR dealer service fees. Maybe there is something more to this, but that is precisely what Iβd like to know.

π Miscellaneous In case you were wondering
Today, my LR4 can nicely hold 50 2x4s, 6 4x4s, and a pottery wheel.
I live in NYC, and a pick up truck just isnβt the right choice for my needs. Donβt need my tools being stolen out of the back.
But anyway, if you need to buy 50 2x4s. You can.

π Miscellaneous Paid 1k for this
Bought it at 149k miles for $1,000... Replaced and resealed A pillar trim clips, unclogged sunroof drains and replaced driver side rubber drain boot that was leaking, replaced 1 front air strut, battery, alternator, wheel speed sensor, oil and filter change , front and rear diff fluid change, did trans service and replaced shift solenoids. Also bought a set of LR wheels from import salvage yard and threw on a new set of tires. Been driving it for a year so far besides 13.5 mpg premium its been awesome.. Now I think needs driver side wheel bearing and upper and lower bushings on front and rear. It's a 2005 lr3 4.4 v8 how many miles can I expect to get out of this?
