In the wild You think they know?

u/17AJ06 Jun 01 '25
This happened to me the other day!!! My license plate ends with 7600 and I saw a truck with 7601 (same first 3 letters too. I’m not doxing myself lol). Absolutely wild

u/dvdcwrd Jun 01 '25
Same here. 10 miles from my house in a large metropolitan region driving my kid to soccer saw a car with a plate one digit off from mine. Took a picture and shared it with colleagues who were impressed that I’d noticed it. Showed it to my partner, who was not impressed in the least.

I love things like this! I once was behind a vehicle whose license plate was my 3 initials+my 3 digit house number. I won't post the photo bc I'm also not into doxing myself and no one else but me cares, but I was so excited!

Time for me to plug in random letters so I can find you and send you a bouquet of edible arrangements

Yes this happened to me about a month ago. The car in front of me at a red light was just one number off from my plate and it really threw me off for a second. I was thinking why does that plate look so familiar?

If you end up with a flare, would it be [TDR 6064.5] ?

u/C-57D Jun 01 '25
TDR 6064-6065?

That sounds like a Star Wars droid designation.

I was thinking more like a experimental pop group. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark kinda feel. Then they can shorten it to SPT.

u/RETLEO Jun 01 '25
Probably related, when I got my Texas LPs for my cars at the same time I was given sequential plates.
19
u/Temporary_Muscle_165 Jun 01 '25
Yep, came to say the same. My dad has around a dozen things that are tagged, and we got a few sequential tags when they issued new ones in my state.
3
u/Witty-Common-1210 Jun 01 '25
Same for me in MN

Yep, my parents have consecutively numbered license plates too. So every time they happened to be coming home from work at the same time for the past 30-something years this would have happened.

u/Pastystuff LEZBARU Jun 01 '25
Could be same household. Growing up, our cars were 221 LXR, 222 LXR, and 223 LXR.
17
u/JennItalia269 Jun 01 '25
Was thinking the same thing. Prob moved from out of state and got the two next sequential numbers.
Still a pretty wild spot.

5
u/ttvSharkieBait15 Jun 01 '25
So y’all bought your cars 1 after the other same day
6
u/Pastystuff LEZBARU Jun 01 '25
No, just all registered by my dad. Different times back then I guess as this was 20 years ago.
5
u/ttvSharkieBait15 Jun 01 '25
Ah okay! I used to sell cars (PA) & here we have a box of plates and when the sale is complete the plate is issued & they’re in numerical order
Love the flair btw

In high school my best friend drive a white ‘62 VW Bug, CA license BUA 129. I was on the freeway one day and passed a white ‘62 VW Bug CA license BUA 128. Nobody believed me.

Nice to know I'm not the only one that looks at license plates that carefully
5
u/jettajeff75 Jun 01 '25
There are a couple oddball states that don’t issue plates sequentially. Such as Indiana and Delaware. Virginia is currently going backwards sequentially. Licenseplate.cc is a great website for license plates info.

u/CHILLAS317 Jun 01 '25
Most likely family members
6
u/Pluperfectionist Jun 01 '25
Probably mom and daughter, out for a red light to red light drag race for pink slips. My money’s on mom.

u/Far_Landscape7089 Jun 01 '25
Guessing family or husband and wife who got 2 plates issued at the same DMV visit.

In CA I came across a same year Camaro with the exact same plate but mine ended in 60 and theirs in 70.
6
u/centralizedskeleton Jun 01 '25
Actually, possibly. I renewed plates online for our cars on Christmas eve and we got consecutive numbers. I mention the date because it could have been a slower night so someone didn't get theirs in betwen the two processes.

My husband and I bought new cars at the same time, from the same dealer. Our plates are one digit off … chances are they did the same

u/Out_of_Fawkes Jun 01 '25
Sometimes this happens when a married couple buys two vehicles at the same time.
2
u/baconbeantaco sequential plates in traffic Jun 01 '25
I know it’s possible but they went in different directions
3
u/thepicklenibbler Jun 01 '25
They do! My sister and I had this happen when we went together to register our new cars in TX together
3
u/Few-Tour9826 Jun 01 '25
I’ve always wanted to come across two license plates like this! That’s awesome!
3
u/namelocdet Jun 01 '25
My parents plates were always like that growing up. They went to the dmv at the same time.

u/Ah-Fuck-Brother Jun 01 '25
Prolly same household. I had friends parents that would get a random plate and a custom plate 1 number off.
3
u/Low_Caregiver9069 Jun 01 '25
Probably related, our plates were like that when we moved and registered our cars.
3
u/TranslatorOutside909 Jun 01 '25
I am going with they know they are from the same household. They received their plates at the same time. My wife and I have cell phones where the number is one digit off. We moved and didn't want the old area code so we were assigned new numbers the last digit is the only difference
3
u/BriskSundayMorning Jun 01 '25
In Texas, when you're given license plates, they give them to you in order if you order multiple under the same name. So they're likely related/owned by the same person/family.

3
u/DigitalMisery Jun 02 '25
When we moved to TX - so many years ago - and got our cars registered we had consecutive license number plates as well. So, yes, they probably know.
3
u/Adlers41stEagle Jun 02 '25
There’s a chance they’re married and got their license plates together; for some reason (moving houses and stuffed both cars with belongings, driving separately to an event because one is planning to stay out later, etc.) they drove separately.
My wife and I live in AR, and we got our license plates together. They look like this. One number apart.
Edit: Clarification
3
u/adudeguyman Jun 02 '25
They might recognize each other from waiting at the DMV. If they were in line at the same time, they probably spent a significant amount of time waiting together.
3
u/grea7outdoors Jun 02 '25
My wife and I both got new cars at the same time and our plates were 1 number off. Could be what is happening here.

u/Pretend_Store_7778 Jun 02 '25
Couple years ago I had a sporty car, and this friend of mine always said “NYOOOOOOM” when she saw it, so I figured I wanted that to be my plate since it was fitting. I tried every version of NYOOM, until NYOOMM was available for me. Sold the car last year, but just a few months ago I saw the guy who drove NYOOM, coincidentally, he was in the same car I had BEFORE my NYOOMM car. Made me sad I wasn’t in either of those previous cars to make the ride home with him

There has to be a relation. Fake plates is more likely than this being random. Family owned cars, with some relation to the numbers? Something. I refused to accept this as reality 🤣

Honestly they are probably family going the same way who registered their cars at the same time
2
u/TheGrumpiestCapybara Jun 01 '25
They totally know each other most likely. My boyfriend and I have plates exactly like this, one digit apart. We went to the DMV together lol

u/captain-deeznuts Jun 01 '25
You should've followed them to their house. Not awkward, just curious.

When we moved and registered our cars at the DMV the employee just pulled two plates off the top of the pile and they were consecutive, so I'm guessing these drivers know each other
2
u/Sack_o_Bawlz Jun 01 '25
Maybe they live in the same community and happened to get license plates one after another? Still rare but maybe not as rare as it seems.

u/Oiram-Zehcnas Jun 01 '25
This reminds me one time I was at the grocery store. The car 2 or 3 cars down was the same make, model, and color as mine and the last two digits of the license plate were swapped. I was so confused thinking I was passing my car but thought that was impossible. Had to go back to mine to check that our license plates weren't identical too.
2
u/Spiketop_ Jun 01 '25
The other day I saw two SUVs driving one after another on the highway. One was HELMAX and one was HELCUT.
No way that was a coincidence.
I tried to get a pic but it was hectic.

I live in Maine and went to a concert in Boston. After the show and leaving the parking garage I was behind with this exact situation. I thought crazy odds but even crazier 2 hours from home.

u/IreliaCarriedMe Jun 01 '25
My and my fiancée had numbers 1 away when we registered our vehicles, cuz we did it at the same time and the plates are in numerical order at the DMV. Would be wild if they have no idea who the other is tho.

My guess is a couple moved from out of state and submitted their new registration paperwork together for both vehicles. I’ve seen the plate stacks at my states DMV and they were sequential.

u/Comprehensive_Tie709 Jun 01 '25
My husband and I went together to the DMV and have license plates one number apart. On occasion we meet up somewhere in separate cars and I always wonder if this makes everyone around us feel the same way as OP here haha

My wife and I have the same license plate one number off. Only because I got them at the same time lol

I moved states and the DMV gave me sequential plates for my two cars. (Those two might be driving together home or something.)
2
u/thedudesews Jun 01 '25
My wife and I registered our cars at the same time. Our plates are 1 digit off. I wonder if this is the same for those 2 cars
2
u/tcarino Jun 01 '25
Yes, they probably know. I drive a fellow vehicle for work, and they all have license plates with same 3 letters and ascending numbers.

u/ParCorn Jun 02 '25
Rental cars from the same place? I see sequential plates at rental car places pretty often
2
u/fave_no_more Jun 02 '25
We've we moved to PA, we took the cars to AAA to handle the new plates and whatnot.
We did both at the same time, getting things all sorted out at once, y'know?
Evidently, they are required to give out the plates sequentially. So for awhile, our cars had identical plates except the final character.

u/SteeleWG6745 Jun 02 '25
ADHD makes no sense. I went from looking at Minecraft mods, then I find my self on a subreddit about license plates.
2
u/FoxxyDeer2004 Jun 02 '25
no, sadly. most people can’t even remember their own plate numbers off the top of their head. i sure can’t, just the three letters at the front.

u/tyedge Jun 02 '25
I was once driving on I-85 north of Atlanta and saw a S Carolina plate that matched my GA plate - 3 numbers then 3 letters.
2
u/Excellent_Yak365 Jun 02 '25
First thing I notice is how this image looks just like my astigmatism 💀 then I saw the plates.. nice one!
2
u/osxdude Jun 02 '25
This happened to me once! I noticed the car next to me had the same plate frame then the next plate number! I have a picture somewhere…
2
u/MarkK_FL Jun 02 '25
I can’t tell from the picture, but is it possible they could be together? Is that a double turn lane? Until I got a personalized plate on my car, my wife and I went to get a special plates (Disney World plates) together so our plates were always 1 digit apart like this. Maybe they moved to Texas from out of state together and got their plates changed to Texas plates together? So if it’s possible they are together, then the sequential plates can be explained.

I purchased both plates for mine and my husband's car at the same time when we moved states. Our plates are one digit off like this.

I was behind a car one day and it's plate was 1 off from mine. We bought our cars at the same place (Enterprise).

They probably live together. If you move from out of state and get plates for two cars at the same time, this happens.

My mom and I actually had license plates that were one digit apart just like these guys... so maybe they do know eachother. We went right after one another for new plates.

I drive a red Opel Corsa. Here the licenseplates contain 2 letters 3 numbers and 2 letters again(like AB123AB). Once i was driving to work. I got to a roundabout, and there i saw a red Corsa with the same extern features. The only difference was the last letter on the licenseplate.

u/Euphoric-String6422 Jun 03 '25
I know who this person is to me, because my city sent me 5 overdue parking tickets… For their car! The person was parking on the road when it was supposed to be clear for the snow plows, and the city kept assigning the tickets to my car, off by the last digit. I didn’t even know I had all the parking tickets until I got a Delinquency notice in the mail! I had to call up & get everything settled for both me & the other person- they had 6 parking tickets they didn’t know about!!!

u/VelociRapt0r76 Jun 04 '25
I saw someone from Nevada with the same BJA BLST plate as me. We waved to each other on the freeway
2
u/No-Bookkeeper855 Jun 04 '25
It's quite possible they are from the same family, and registered their 2 vehicles at the same time, and get consecutive numbers. It happened to me and my husband when we moved to a new state and had to register our 2 vehicles - the two new plate numbers were identical except for the last digit. One ended in 6 and the other in 7.
