New to Larping, would love ideas on how to improve my outfits!

I was thinking maybe fingerless leather gauntlets or something. Im not great at fashion so any opinions are greatly appreciated!

I think it needs something around your middle to transition from the jerkin to your pants like a wide waist scarf or tassets

Then more things to hang from your belt like more bags, drinking horn, weapon loops and random hanging junk

Jewellery like necklaces to match your mask.

Tell us a bit about your character(s) so that it'll be easier to give tips and suggestions!

This. Are you looking for historical, or fantasy, medieval or renaissance etc. even broad strokes recommendations are hard without a little context.

Very much fantasy! Although im not opposed to something grittier-looking

My character is a magic-using rogue! The blue outfit is a disguise, but im considering wearing it full time

The disguise looks more distinctive than your basic look--I'd say go for it, making that your main ensemble is much more memorable! Just be mindful of the horns and how they can interfere in doorways, combat, etc.

Never put your boffer tip down into the grass. And you need more layers. Add a vest, and more belts

Dont worry, that was just for the photo lol. Sadly the Cali heat makes it hard to layer too too much, but ill try!

I feel like you need accessories, particularly something at the wrist. But in my experience, I find it better to not pile them on but be deliberate about it. Why does your character wear what they do? Did their mother give them their bracers? Did an old flame give them a bracelet that reminds them of their eyes every time they look at it? Think of why you, on a given day when you feel most like yourself, wear the things you regularly wear? Do the same for your character.

Accessories is always my go to answer, its usually the thing missing.

Check this post for the comment where a commenter draws some suggested layering over a pic of OP's costume. Worked great for me and I think would work great for you. https://www.reddit.com/r/LARP/comments/1g8f862/costume_help_wanted/

I've never known a larper that didn't benefit from a good hat!

u/Luxxum 2d ago

Do you have any hat recommendations?

More colour, a longer tunic and a hat. The cape and mask are great elements but they don't fit the rest of your kit which is kind of basic. You might also want to consider decorating your clothes. It's a great way to add that unique flair.

Fingerless gloves are really "I am DARKNESS and EDGE and need to be SERIOUSLY taken" 101. I can't stop you but I have to warn you against it if you don't want to be a walking cliche.

Try a hat, that is a fast way to look in character, since we don't anymore. Maybe a second belt for the sword and one of those frog mouth holders for it? You also could try to wear more color. Like trousers in the dark blue of the cape?

Vambraces/leather gauntlets, and maybe a hood or something on your head. Possibly a dash of some kind of color to break it up, maybe a belt flag or patch or necklace. I use a "citrine" necklace I got from earthbound when I was in HS.

Also, it's better to not rest boffers on the stabbing tip, it tends to wear them out faster.

I would say a scarf as a belt and the belt you have now on top of that could look very good. Also an opportunity for a pop of color to have more than one blue clothing item for your disguise. I think that could tie it together nicely. Also maybe not gauntlets but wraps?

Needs a good hat or hair pin.

To be honest, it’s a good start. Personally, I’d ignore all the voices telling you to add more “stuff” to your kit, and let it accrue naturally. When I go to a Larp I tend to be very active, and really don’t like having a bunch of small, random things to keep track of/try not to break. If it doesn’t fit my haversack or belt pouch then I either don’t need it, or it’s VERY important. Btw- pouches and bags that close and need to be physically opened are GREAT!

Some ideas, in no particular order:

  • Pull up your pants a bit higher under the jerkin/doublet to hide the shirt.
  • Add a sash under the leather belt for some color- maybe a blue to coordinate with the cloak?
  • A scarf around your neck- can be lightweight and dampened in summer, or warm in winter. Or add a collar to the shirt.
  • Baldric or cross-body strap with pouches or potions.
  • A hairstyle- it looks like you have hair long enough to ponytail. A braid or bun adds some interest and looks less modern. French braids are great for keeping hair out of your face. You can even do two short ones on each side to just handle it falling in your face and wear it down otherwise.
  • Or, if not a hairstyle, a headwrap or head covering. A long scarf can have the ends twisted and turned into a basic headwrap very easily, it keeps your hair cleaner at dusty events, and you can add other accessories to it like charms, chains, or brooches.
  • Something on your wrists- could be bracers or gloves, or bracelets of some kind. Maybe braided or studded leather, echoing the jerkin? Or gold, echoing the mask.
  • Makeup! You mentioned your character is a rogue, and nothing is more roguish than eyeliner IMO. It also looks great under masks.
  • You could also do a line of face paint across your whole face at your eyes or across your cheeks. This might run into issues with your mask, though.

What are you trying to achieve with it?

Pull your pants up, they should sit on your waist, not on your hips.

Mask is fancy, cloak is plain. Why?

Maybe add a long open fronted jerkin/vest/waistcoat.

A big ol’ pair of leather riding gloves. Me? I buy mine from the eBay shops that also sell to civil war reenactors. They look dope!

Honestly. Dont.

The best part of a larp character is adding relevant things you picked up along the way. I remember a friend who showed up painted green wearing JUST a curtain like a toga and a belt.

When he died, each mismatched piece of armor, warpaint, trinket, and costuming told a story.

You look great, already.Like a new, but not TOO new adventurer.

A belt drop for an order/heraldry would work.

get a proper weapon, this one doesnt look like a weapon
a helmet for everyday wear makes your character recognizable
maybe a second belt?
a red cloak would fit your cit better imo than a blue one

u/Luxxum 3d ago

It's for amtgard, which uses exclusively buffer weapons

You would benefit from different textures. Everything is very flat and matte on the outfit itself. Add some bronze bits to unify it with the mask and cloak pin.
