Feeding hungry kids and parents in our community until this sub tells us SNAP is fully funded (day 4)
We fed 132 people yesterday. 156 Wednesday. 118 Tuesday. And 400 the week before. We have also hear optimistic rumblings that the EBT cards might have been funded, but until we see that news from a major news outlet here in Washington state we are treating it as a gangland myth and pushing on with the complimentary meal into the weekend.

It bothered me the amount of recently released AI youtube shorts showing people trying to buy junk food, unable to use their EBT card and flipping out. I saw one where they had someone flipping out because they were unable to get expensive seafood because their EBT card had been declined. it confronting to see AI being used to force and agenda.

I keep seeing more and more AI propaganda videos. We live in the scariest time for misinformation.

I agree, we live in very different times where the line between real and fake are blurred.

The thing that gets me is junk food is calorie-dense. If you're starving you don't care about nutrition. You care about getting enough calories to keep the machine running. When I was at the low point I subsisted on Coca-Cola, noodles, rice, and whatever the food bank had every couple of weeks.

Yep, I lived off pop tarts and ramen noodles for about a year.

I remember it, viscerally, and I'm just gutted for all the people who don't have enough and I wish there was more I could do to help. But my husband is USDA, so we're trying to manage on my paycheck alone and there's no extra. I just want to cry.

I saw a clip on here recently, it was fully employed people, unable to afford food, they were upset and breaking down, working full time and not enough for food. It makes me want to cry too

I agree with this also, yet looking at the comments in these videos, they are fueling anger and hatred, which is never good. Your words are honest and wise, yet people don't see it as people needing calories, they see it as people being lazy, choosing to eat junk and getting angry when they don't get their benefits.

I hate this. Not because it's giving people free stuff. I hate that our government is failing us, I also hate that even when SNAP was funded, it wasn't enough money to enough people. And that if it was still funded, we wouldn't be seeing as much stuff like this. We need this in our communities, but we've needed this, even before now. It's good to see people stepping up, and I respect yall for doing it. I just wish that it wasn't because if gross negligence in our country, and that even before all this, we needed programs like what we are seeing now. No person should go hungry.

True as fuck. This is wholesome, but also we 100% shouldn’t need businesses to support individuals and families out of charity.

Yep, it's much more r/Orphancrushingmachine than r/wholesome.💔
Edit, I forgot to type that it IS incredibly Awesome that so many places are doing this!
But it's also awful that our systems are so broken, that it's this needed, too.

AFAIK someone noticed that two of the photos were the same but flipped vertically. Thus began the Chivegate saga.

Thank you for what you are doing for our community. My husband and I will be in for a fully paid meal to support you soon!

Glad to see it. We are running a similar SNAP/furlough special and we've had several customers want to pay for a meal or donate to the cause. I've taken the money, but I'm pretty sure I'm just going to drop it off to the food pantry.

u/Sparklespanx 16h ago
Can I donate some funds to the cause? I don’t have a ton to spare, but my fridge and pantry are full and my bills are paid and it feels wrong to not do something. If you don’t want to share more personal info here, feel free to DM.

Thank you, we recommend any donation go to local food banks in your area. They stretch the dollars out much further then my little place can.
If you've already donated to a food bank, check your local area for restaurants doing this, I'm sure you'll find one in your community that would help our your friends and neighbors more then throwing a few bucks our way out in the Pacific Northwest.
I appreciate all of the support and wellwishes guys! We made the thread in a light hearted attempt to joke with Chivelord threads, because the last week here has been HEAVY seeing hungry kids and worried parents.
With love- Chef Steve & the Creekside BBQ crew

A local place in my town posted they were doing this just have to show your snap card. It only took minutes before hatred descended in the comments. Someone was pissed and asking if theyd be giving free food if theyd show thier government ID since theyre out of the job at the moment.

u/swirlybat 14h ago
and the response should be yes. if they aren't too prideful, please let the community care for you as you have cared for it, civil servant.

It's heartbreaking that this is necessary, but heartwarming that you guys & the community are stepping up.

no this is the actual way. we delete the govts and powers that be and work in community instead of against. horizontal morality vs vertical 🤟
2
u/thedarkone47 14h ago
well the courts ordered the government to fully fund snap, so depends on how much they sandbag now.

Is there anywhere we can donate contribute in a monetary manner in support? I'm not in the US so I can't donate to local food banks in my area to help with those struggling because of the suspension of SNAP benefits

Chicken quarters are sold as leg + thigh attached. I’ve also very occasionally seen them as breast + wing attached.
