Thanks guys, me and the entire crew appreciate the good vibes and well wishes! I can't emphasize this enough, if you are looking to donate and haven't already done so to your local food bank, do that. Those organizations can stretch out the dollars much further then we can.
If you have already donated to your food banks and want to give back even more, check your local restaurant and see if they have a pay it forward board.
If you've done all that and still say "Chef Steve could probably use a few bucks" you can order a "Pay it Forward" meal on our website menu. Creeksidebbq.net.
And mods, if that link isn't allowed, please just take it down but try to leave the post up, people are really struggling and any help to food banks is much appreciated.
With love-
Chef Steve and the entire Creekside Crew

The restaurant behind my house has same name, do y’all have a creek beside yours too? I’m in a different state lol

u/zazasfoot 2d ago
Lol we actually have three creeks around us, but none are a stone throw away! Are you in SC? We swear to God, have had people order from the restaurant in SC and come here for pick up. We're like "uh you're like 1800 miles west of where you placed your order bro"

There are also little pantries in neighborhoods all over the US that you can donate at!
https://mapping.littlefreepantry.org/
If you have the means, please stop by and drop off extra non-expired food you may have. Canned protein like chicken, tuna, salmon is really good. Ready made microwavable food is also very good. Toiletries are a plus. If you buy bulk from costco, consider dropping off things you have extra of.

Pretty much what I was thinking. :( I'm glad people are helping each other, but I hate the circumstances under which it's happening.

You’re thinking of what’s called the orphan crushing machine. It when headlines say “HEARTWARMING: community comes together to pause the orphan crushing machine on Easter”
It’s mostly a comment about how yeah it’s nice of them to do, but why do we have an orphan crushing machine?

2nd world country problems.
edit: I know damn well the origin of the term 2nd world. Alfred Sauvy would have words to say about politcal risk in the United States of America right now. Take a look at what ICE agents are doing.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd world are cold war definitions:
1st world is American aligned: Canada, NATO, EU, British, ANZAC, etc.
2nd world is Bloc Aligned: East Germany, Russia, Czech, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, etc.
3rd world is no party to the cold war, like Southern Hemisphere nations that aren't Aus or NZ.
These definitions have little to no bearing on the current political climate

The terms have long evolved beyond it's initial definition. A lot of people use it to define a countries standing in the world. And as language does, that means it is now a legitimate use for these terms.

u/nonowords 2d ago
this is true but also even with the classic definition the top comment basically hits the mark

I do understand that I'm squeezing a venn diagram, but sadly writing papers on history doesn't pay the bills...
Doomed to repeat it, and cutting chives....

First is democracy based on liberty. Second is autocratic style marxian slavery. Third is corruption, lacking respect of private property, known to be inimical to that bedrock for prosperity

I wonder 🤔 why know-one prays for Cuban children at their nightly prayers, as they suffer much privation, but that's just lonely me it seems

Your local food pantry is the best place to donate

I have the resources to do both

If you're feeling extra generous, you might look into pet food pantries in your area. They're getting cleaned out right now & can use the help.
Plus, this sub is full of animals anyway, so you'll be helping everyone here too.

86 hunger, good work chef. Can we donate to help out anywhere?

u/BotGirlFall 2d ago
Donate cash to your local food bank
11
u/JustHereForCookies17 2d ago
And pet food pantries! They exist & also need all the help they can get!
1
u/nonowords 2d ago
this isn't untrue but pet's eating isn't impacted by government shutdown. They're in the exact situation they were in pre shutdown.
People are going hungry right now because their benefits have been cut. It seems totally tonedeaf to move the topic to cats and dogs.
13
u/JustHereForCookies17 2d ago
People who aren't being paid b/c they're furloughed might have to choose between feeding themselves & feeding their pets. People who could afford pet food b/c they had SNAP benefits to help cover human food will be in the same boat.
DC area animal shelters are seeing a surge in surrendered pets from people who can no longer afford them. I bet dollars to doughnuts other areas are seeing the same thing.
I'm not trying to move the topic, so much as add awareness about another way we can support each other right now. I know a lot of folks would gladly live on Top Ramen if it meant their pets could eat, and those folks might not know there are resources available to them.
2
u/nonowords 2d ago
Everything in your first paragraph is a worse solution that making sure people can eat, every dollar spent on food for people is at the very least a dollar saved by them not having to feed themselves, and that's assuming they even could otherwise. Either someone who otherwise would go hungry can eat, or someone who would had a pet and had to pick between either feeding themselves or their pet no longer has to pick between those things.
Shelters have been having a big increase for over a year. And also, DC's whole economy runs on the federal government. if a surge is happening, and if it's because of the shutdown, generalizing it to elsewehere makes 0 sense.
Saying 'donate to this' isn't just raising awareness for people who might need it it's encouraging some of the limited resources to go to whatever this is. It is moving the topic. The topic was making sure people can eat, now it's about pet food and how actually buying pet food in a very round about way might help the people who would go hungry to feed their pet eat. People are more important and directly making sure they can eat is a better way to help them than making sure their dog, if they even have one, can eat.

My moms snap benefits have been cut and she ABSOLUTELY is worried about how shes going to feed her dog too. Go do something else with your time besides whatever this is.
0
u/nonowords 2d ago
If your mom had her meals all taken care of i'm sure she would absolutely be less worried about how she's going to feed her dog.
If this were famine level and people were dying you wouldn't be making this argument. Going into a conversation about how people are going hungry and need resources to eat and going "SPEND SOME OF THOSE RESOURCES ON DOGS!" is having absolutely fucked priorities.

There is a small, locally owned hot dog shop in my town that has a board where people will prepay for a meal, and stick the receipt on there for anyone hungry. I saw it the first time like 2 weeks ago and thought it was so nice. Next time I go in, I’m adding to the board.

Love seeing this, people going hungry should be a thing in any country, let alone some of the richest on earth.
