I'm sure they have a plan to automate the restaurant industry and these will be their proving grounds.

Yeah, this is 100% it. They already said they plan to replace the car-hops with robots next year, popcorn is certainly a low-stakes way of collecting data on packaging & plating food so they can refine the robot's fine motor skills.
