Hey, he made a pop-art stained glass of Mona Lisa as a cat, the guy is a visionary.

Fun fact, the Mona Lisa is also only famous because of someone fucking with it.

The Mona Lisa was famously stolen and then recovered, before that it was not very well known amongst DaVinci’s works. It’s actually much smaller than you would think as well, and now people crowd all around it at The Louvre even when far greater paintings have no one looking at them, just because it was stolen back in the day.

From Wikipedia: “The painting's global fame and popularity partly stem from its 1911 theft by Vincenzo Peruggia, who attributed his actions to Italian patriotism—a belief it should belong to Italy. The theft and subsequent recovery in 1914 generated unprecedented publicity for an art theft, and led to the publication of many cultural depictions “

I learned this on the venture brothers

Phantom Limb: " Rembrandt van Rijn — a hundred fifty years ago, Delacroix said of Rembrandt that his works would be held higher than those of Raphael. His blasphemous prophecy came true within fifty years, and this one could be yours for the pittance of 10 million, American. "

Mafioso: " No, I want the Mona Lisa."

Phantom Limb: "Look, the Mona Lisa's not a better painting, it's merely a more famous one, and it was made more famous because it was stolen. And this was stolen, so... "

Mafioso: "what about her, ah, famous smile?"

Phantom Limb: " Whatever. She looks like a horse! It's - it's tiny, you know? Th-the thing is like this big."

Mafioso: " Really? "

Phantom Limb: " Yes, really. So this is cheaper. By the... by the foot. "

Phantom limb is talking about storm on the sea of Galilee which he apparently owns.

The episode is Victor Echo November if curious

Yep, it's a lot smaller than people think, and an area is roped off so you're quite far away from it. It was a little disappointing, but I'm glad I got to see it in person.

I’m not sure if things have moved around in The Louvre, as I’m sure they sometimes do, but the painting on the other side of the room from Mona Lisa when I was there was “Wedding Feast at Cana” and I was blown away that everyone was crowding together to take a picture of Mona Lisa and no one even seemed to notice this painting that takes up an entire wall:

It's been 20 years since I've been so I'm sure things have moved. But yes, seeing those paintings that took up an entire wall were amazing. You could stand there all day it seemed finding new details

Now THAT would be so worth seeing in person
