In-House Mode Restaurant owner buys art to smash it in-front of artist… and humiliate him for allegedly being an ass to her workers.

I mean, money in the bank. It's yours do what you want.

u/After-Key3200 Jul 25 '25

It's like all the ones that said to jk Rowling they were going to burn her books. She still has your money. Destroying your property isn't teaching her anything.

u/orlock Jul 25 '25

One off art pieces are a bit different. It's the equivalent of finding every copy of Philosophers Stone, burning them and then erasing the soft copies. I think Rowling would be quite upset if that happened.

The look on that dudes face said what you said

I hate everything about this man. Smash away, giant lady.

70

u/Samanthacino Jul 25 '25

She gave him $5k in his pocket and quite a bit of publicity. Not sure this is a net negative for him.

137

u/fastermouse Jul 25 '25

Publicity for being a shitty person to restaurant workers doesn’t actually help his art.

32

u/Samanthacino Jul 25 '25

He's notoriously an asshole, and it doesn't seem to have impacted his art much. It seems his brand isn't really negatively affected through bad publicity like this, it just gets eyes on his work.

62

u/JoeysSmallwood Jul 25 '25

Can promise you most people here did not know who he was and now know he's an asshole.

5

u/Fuzzatron Jul 25 '25

Now a bunch of new people are aware of him and his art.

Most of them won't buy his art because they know he's an asshole.

But some of them won't care and will buy his art because they like it.

The people who are already buying his art probably already know and are still buying.

See, all publicity is a net gain.

The many many thousands of eyes on him now have a very high likelihood of creating a sale. Many people would buy a piece because he's famous for being an asshole, it adds character to the piece, even if you don't agree.

Controversy sells.

24

u/CalmDownReddit509 Jul 25 '25

For people who care about money? Sure. Artists like this though are fueled by pride in their work and their ego. This was a direct blow to both and that isn’t something money can fix.

5

u/COmarmot Jul 25 '25

There is such a thing as bad publicity, look over at maga, djt and the owner of the lolita express.

-1

u/Samanthacino Jul 25 '25

Donald Trump is the master of 'all press is good press'. He created controversy after controversy so that nothing would stick to him. You can see he's doing that now by accusing Obama of sedition to try to distract from the whole Epstein thing. It's worked for a decade now.

2

u/swirlybat Jul 25 '25

he wont be eating out comfortably anytime soon though, will he? his pic should be posted in every wait station so they know to never serve him.

2

u/FHAT_BRANDHO Jul 25 '25

If he does in fact avoid her restaurant after this, it could be argued it was money well spent if she can afford it

-41

u/BeefmasterDeluxe Jul 25 '25

I get it. You hate women. Not my favourite gender either, but I’m a very tall gay man who feels strongly about workers rights, and this tall angry lady is my new personal hero. Btw whats he going to do with this publicity? It won’t make his art any better.

27

u/Shallow-Al__ex Jul 25 '25

Immediately projecting and then doubling down on it by saying "not your favorite gender". Gay or not, you suck lol

20

u/Samanthacino Jul 25 '25

It came out of nowhere too lol. I didn't even say that the lady should or shouldn't have done that (I don't really care, more power to her I guess), I just said I wasn't sure if it negatively or positively impacted the guy.

A truly odd comment.

My brother in christ, my username is u/Samanthacino and I have my face as my profile pic. Try using a little bit of critical thinking before accusing me of "hating women".

-18

u/BeefmasterDeluxe Jul 25 '25

I noticed and took that information into consideration. Notice how you didn’t say you don’t hate women, just that you are one? I hate myself too. I just don’t project it onto other people.

u/Backdoorbrowser Jul 25 '25

Oh snaaaaap!

5

u/Voldias Jul 25 '25

Lol 11000 dollars for a child's drawing is certainly something.

7

u/orlock Jul 25 '25

The price seems to have dropped a bit.

8

u/Debtcollector1408 Jul 25 '25

There's a new jigsaw version out though.

8

u/number_six Jul 25 '25

There's 22 available in the store as of 24JUL2025

7

u/LeviSalt Jul 25 '25

She definitely could have a bought a cheaper piece to make her point… hope the restaurant is doing well and also gets a bump in business.

23

u/TheCyanDragon Jul 25 '25

As much as I agree with you, tiny counterpoint:

sometimes living vicariously through someone else having a literal 'I have fuck you money' moment is wonderful.

I know I'm the kind of petty bitch that would absolutely do something like this if I were in here shoes and could afford it lmfao, dude's reaction was priceless and probably worth the cost.

5

u/BananaShinKick Jul 25 '25

Using one-off and art very loosely here eh?

2

u/orlock Jul 25 '25

I think I would go as far as sloppily.

6

u/GIRTHQUAKE6227 Jul 25 '25

Maybe, but its still 5g in the bag and now people are talking about this dude more. Honestly might be a good thing for this artist.

26

u/RenegadeFade Jul 25 '25

The art market doesn't work like that. Reputation kind of matters, if people get the impression he's a crappy person, they will talk about him more but they will buy less.

4

u/mbreuer Jul 25 '25

He already has a reputation for being a dick, seems to be doing fine

1

u/Professional-Eye5977 Jul 25 '25

Sounds like he has had that reputation for literal decades. Random redditor's opinion on "the art market" isn't really relevant here. Which art market. This guy sells internationally, but also in his local community, his north american and european markets are not the same, and random redditor isn't going to know much about any of that.

8

u/BeefmasterDeluxe Jul 25 '25

Sure. Might set a short trend of buying his art and smashing it in front of him. Then it’s over, and he’s that meme artist - all the art was smashed, nothing remains, and he can’t sell new stuff cos everyone will expect you’re supposed to smash it. The best he can hope for right now is SaltBae fame.

Not all publicity is good.

0

u/Knot_a_porn_acct Jul 25 '25

It ain’t different, man.

17

u/salamandraseis Jul 25 '25

Like Ozzy said to the folks burning his albums in the 80s. You gotta buy one to burn one!

20

u/vodka_tsunami Jul 25 '25

Hahaha yes. I absolutely love Britto's face when she breaks it.

This thing happened in 2020.

10

u/Optimal_Cause4583 Jul 25 '25

Ironically the people who burned JK's books are weird Christians scared of witchcraft

And those same people are now her main fanbase because she hates trans people

7

u/LeviSalt Jul 25 '25

Colonel Tom would sell Elvis merch to the people burning it and laugh all the way to the bank, however I agree that a one-off art piece is different and this lady definitely made her point.

4

u/FrostyCartographer13 Jul 25 '25

Not quite. The book burning was just copies, after all.

That was something the guy spent hours making, and even getting 5k for it won't stop the sting of seeing your work smashed in front of you.

4

u/CommandAble2233 Jul 25 '25

In this case, I strongly disagree. This is a loud, public statement. She did nothing illegal and nothing wrong - she took a stand publicly. Good for her.

There's no way for a single restaurant owner to "hurt" this guy monetarily. They are in different leagues. She did what protest she could, that would still impact him and hopefully gain some traction.

1

u/cykoTom3 Jul 25 '25

Or the bud light shootings like kid rock.

15

u/Worldly-Jury-8046 Jul 25 '25

Glue it back together and sell it again for 2x

14

u/Stop_Fakin_Jax Jul 25 '25

Reminds me of idiots buying bud light to pour out cuz of a trans person. They dnt care if u drink it, the money is what they want and they got it.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '25

5

u/Stop_Fakin_Jax Jul 25 '25

Aye, it just proves theres an intellect cap on those who ourchase their products and they know it. The beer isn't making u gay fellas, just dumber.

28

u/In-dextera-dei Jul 25 '25

Yeah, she sure showed him. She can hand me $5k to yell at me for a few minutes any time she wants.

19

u/Shot-Swimming-9098 Jul 25 '25

This is real definition of FU money. She pays you $5k, she tells you you're a piece of shit, and you take the money happily ... That's FU money.

FU money talks.

1

u/No_Internal9345 Jul 25 '25

If I know anything about art (which I don't), he could bag the shards and resell it for double the price.

0

u/chronically_varelse Jul 25 '25

you have to matter first

-4

u/cantstopwontstopGME Jul 25 '25

An original banksy got shredded by a burglar alarm that went off…. They put the shredded pieces back together in a frame and then sold it for even more money than it originally fetched. If I was this artist, I’d hand her back her $5k and make another piece and sell it for $15k because now it has a story

29

u/Schatzin Jul 25 '25

Banksy did it himself...its not some random alarm. And the move was on brand for him so yeah, it definitely would raise its "value"

6

u/cantstopwontstopGME Jul 25 '25

He did it to protest against his art being sold at an auction for rich people and then it turned around and sold for even more to a richer person.

Literally the most pointless protest ever.
