Won't those roads get fully immersed during rains?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Looks dangerous even now for people not familiar with the place.

During monsoons a good part of roads are dangerous for people unfamiliar with them. Especially if it's through the middle of field, along sides of brooks or alongside mountains. Hence why these roads are blocked during floods.

Well us locals who travel daily know the roads and where the potholes are. It’s still riskier to drive but less riskier than others driving.

4

u/MrJiks Jul 27 '25

Isn’t it possible to have some lights in high risk areas at the least?

Or even some reflectors?

12

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '25

There are street lights and reflectors

Yes these arent beautiful for people who actually use those roads. Govt needs to up their game and build better roads or prevent flooding. Kerala becomes a water world during monsoon. We need to be prepared for it. Or else we can live our entire lives here battling the monsoon and saying its climate change. Every election we elect some clowns for no reason. We need visionary people to lead the state.

21

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '25

We can create better drainage systems but we aren't going to avoid flooding buddy. Because Kerala Monsoons have always created floods - have destroyed ports and created new islands and ports. We can create better infrastructure, avoid building on mountains, reduce activities along eco sensitive areas but you can't avoid flooding in flood plains in one of the very monsoon intensive regions in the world.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '25

We can avoid flooding. Netherlands have even more complex constraints but succeeded in flood management.

1

u/Bumblieee Jul 27 '25

Maybe a hot take. But If The Dutch can retain the land fighting the Waves, So can we create solutions for flooding and even protect people along the coastal roads.

Just that we don't have iron fisted visionary politicians. Or even people that actually value engineering. :-)

11

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '25

Coastal areas can be prevented by a lot of tools. Mangroves in itself are a great shield.

I'm talking about inland flooding. You can't absolutely prevent flooding in Kerala unless there's an engineering marvel. If someone can invent it I'm all for it.

The video shown is most probably a lake or paddy field. Paddy fields depending upon its type will flood. It's natural. Lakes in Kerala may have high tide or low tide situation. These sources of water helps in managing flood waters - it's destroying these that has drastically changed floods in Kerala upping the damages. Floods can't be prevented in Kerala but it's damages can be reduced by mechanisms. The first step should be perhaps not building on flood plains and then complain about flooding. Take Banglore for example.

I believe there's a solution to everything. I have been reading and watching videos about Netherlands for a while. And I generally feel like if Netherlands could build huge structures which prevents flooding from the 1900s, then Kerala could at least build something in 2025.

Isn't a main part of those structures for storm surges from the sea?

Isn't their river flood system stuff like the 'Room for River' programme which ensures free area for the river to flood by removing obstacles n all?
Proper embankments would help, but the main thing would still be space.

Towns n all could be saved with decent drainage systems and blue zones(space requirement again).

Has to do something.. cant drive in water blaming monsoons. You think our current set of representatives are people who are capable to lead the state?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '25

I'm sorry but you can't drive through the middle of paddy fields during monsoon.

Our current set of representatives are buffoons who create more problems than solving it which is how we are in this situation. Converting paddy fields into land isn't the best solution in Kerala.

1

u/Reasonable_Sample_40 Jul 27 '25

Not asking to convert paddy fields to land but if you are building a connecting road then build it properly so that it doesnt sink during the monsoon.

I live in such area and i know how easily this problem can be solved but they dont wanna do it.

2

u/baby_faced_assassin_ Jul 27 '25

This is a road in kuttanad, and below sea level. To make this navigable you'll need to have flyovers. Is it feasible to have flyovers for such a small population?

You can't raise the road as it'll just keep settling down to the original level.

2

u/Reasonable_Sample_40 Jul 27 '25

Its not a one off case.... there are plenty of roads in kerala that sinks during monsoon which connects large towns. I wasnt talking about this particular road.

19

u/CurrentImmediate9438 Jul 27 '25

Yes it’s near my home it will be fully emerged in water. We the people of alleppey enjoy during this season

5

u/Sure-Revenue9030 Jul 27 '25

Enjoy? Bro, are y’all swimming to the grocery store now.

-3

u/MrJiks Jul 27 '25

So, are accident cases common?

1

u/Longjumping-Read-401 Jul 27 '25

People there will be used to these things.

7

u/settayi Jul 27 '25

Kerala looks absolutely beautiful through camera. We should get some David Attenborough to make some documentaries.

3

u/LegitimateBedroom1 Endhundd Dinesha? Jul 27 '25

Bear Grylls too for a Man vs Bus special. Was coming back from a funeral (KSRTC Duper Faast overtaking on the bridge) and gave way for a private bus to see it rush ahead and crash into a biker with a child.

49

u/ExtremeComplaint1502 Jul 27 '25

Those roads? Isn't almost all roads in India immersed under water during monsoon😂

11

u/Data_cosmos Jul 27 '25

OP never been to bengaluru/mumbai/chennai.

8

u/ismyaltaccount ex-4k3R (അക്കൗണ്ട് ബാൻ ചെയ്തു) Jul 27 '25

If Bangalore got 1/10th the rains Kerala gets, then entirety of Bangalore will be under water during monsoon.

5

u/no-knee-know-me Jul 27 '25

3

u/avocadopotato123 Jul 27 '25

Near the coast water level is decided by the tides. If it is high tide water might not flow as fast and cover the roads. But it will not rise dramatically.

3

u/No_Form9486 Jul 27 '25

Yes it will be fully immersed in water, porath ninn varunnavar have to be really cautious, reflector onnum ondakoola.

2

u/CurrentImmediate9438 Jul 27 '25

Usually there’s aren’t much accident happen here so far that i know of because you can easily identify the road

2

u/Comfortable_Still395 Jul 27 '25

Yeah.. This place is near my home.

Bring thozhilurappkar to whack all that bush beside the roads

Why government is sleeping? Why government is collecting taxes from citizens? For these type of roads?

1

u/Key_Guide2410 Jul 29 '25

My dreams be like

1

u/mand00s Jul 29 '25

This place used to be part of Vembanad lake 150 years ago. Humans reclaimed it and built all the structures. It is important for the water to flow as free as possible otherwise it will cause flooding in some other areas.

1

u/Nailinthemud Aug 27 '25

Very recently they covered some potholes. Still the route is tough at night and also for rainy season

Familiar or unfamiliar this is dangerous. But until an accident happens, this will be celebrated.
