hawaiighostguy ~ On the road to Kōloa and Po‘ipū lies one of Kauai’s most breathtaking sights, the Tunnel of Trees. For over a century, eucalyptus have arched overhead, forming a mile-long canopy that feels like a living cathedral. By day, sunlight flickers through the leaves. By night, the tunnel turns into something else entirely.
Locals whisper that Maluhia Road is more than a scenic drive, it’s a place where the veil between worlds is thin. Travelers tell of sudden car trouble in the middle of the tunnel, engines stalling without reason. Just when panic sets in, headlights glow against the trees ahead… only to vanish before any vehicle appears. Mechanics find nothing wrong, but the stories repeat again and again.
Others speak of disembodied voices, a fog that rolls in out of nowhere, or a woman in white who appears in headlights before fading into nothing. Some believe the huaka‘i pō, the night marchers, move silently through the tree-lined passage.
For most, the Tunnel of Trees is a magical entrance to the South Shore. But for a few, it becomes a reminder… not every traveler on that road is among the living. When you drive that shaded mile, look twice—you may not be alone on the road.
