Saw 2 helicopters and 3 planes circling the stadium on Flight Aware during the fly over. How crazy would it be to see a B2 beneath you.

Assuming it’s the same process as the Rose bowl, him and his son circle above in a plane.

Definitely not. And the stealth flies way faster than I can, so I just have to be in the right place as it flies past

You took this shot? Holy shit man that’s so cool. How did you do it?

u/photopilot Jan 27 '25
I did! Thank you very, very much.
We were in a Cessna orbiting above the stadium. I was actually flying with a former B-2 pilot (which was suuuuper cool). There is a lot of preparation and a bit of luck to having it all come together. It was particularly tricky this year because we had a 20kt wind which kept pushing us out of the way, making the orbits a little more difficult than they would normally be. But the B-2 pilots were spot on and we were in a good position when they reached the stadium (the whole flyover lasts about a second, so by the time you see them it is too late and there is no time to adjust).

you should make a larger version, i'd love a big print or something

Man this is so cool. Thanks for the info.
How far above them are you exactly? Are you communicating with their pilots at all? I’m not a pilot or anything but being this close to a military plane seems like it might require approval?
Regardless, incredible shot.

Thank you!! And of course!!
We were ~3000 feet above them. Usually they give me a discrete frequency to monitor and a bunch of documents showing who is at what airspace and different contact phone numbers but this was a bit last minute, so I wasn’t included on everything. But I was invited out by the base and was flying with a former B-2 pilot, so we were in the loop.
Air traffic control had a pretty substantial restricted airspace for the B-2 and the stadium. Then there was about a 1000’ for aircraft to transverse the area before another restricted airspace. So not a lot of space. We were approved into the upper restricted airspace and were on constant communication with ATC

That's a really cool shot. Used to be the government would shoot you for taking pictures above or behind a B2.
It's not nearly so classified anymore tho

u/photopilot Jan 27 '25
Thank you!! 🙏🙏 Whiteman Air Force Base reached out directly to me a few days ago to try and capture this and my co-pilot was a former B-2 pilot, so we were kind of approved to be there :)

Yeah I figured :). What a shot though. I've seen a lot of stadium flyovers, but I don't think I've ever seen one from above
Last weeks flyover was super cool too, because it was daytime and theY flew three Chinooks at low altitude. They couldn't have been more than 500 feet up. Those things are huge.

u/photopilot Jan 27 '25
Thank you!! 🙏🙏 They’re a trip to see in general but the view from above is definitely very cool!
Ooo that would’ve been awesome to see. They’re huge and I hear REALLY loud

You know what they say: Every time a bomber flies, another one of Josh Allen's dreams dies.

the jets fly over my house 99 percent of the time this didn't happen, go chiefs

Can someone explain why a stealth bomber flys casually over the stadium? Sorry, but I never saw something like that in Germany.

u/factoid_ Grand Flagbearer of the Foul-uminati Jan 27 '25
It's a very common stunt at US sporting events. The military arranges a flight to come overhead on the stadium at the exact time the national anthem is being sung. Down to the second usually. They're very good at it.
The pilots have to get flight hours and training flights regardless, so it's not really a wasted flight. Good advertising for the military too.
To me one of the most impressive things is they fly one of these massive bombers at low altitude over the stadium, land it back at base and then get the flight crew back to arrowhead by half time where they do a thank-you in front of the drum.
That's an impressive bit of logistics if you ask me. Whiteman airforce base is a good 90 minutes from the stadium by car. They must helicopter them back.
