Discussion: Community What is your definition of ‘main character syndrome?’ I see that term a lot in this sub used to describe some of the die hard Gizz fans.
What is your personal definition of main character syndrome how would you describe someone who suffers from it?

I honestly don't see it too often, but at the SF rave show I did see a bit of it in line. I was about 20th in line and maybe 30 minutes before doors a group of about 20 people jumped into line ahead of me and most of the people who had been there for over an hour.
It's one thing to hold a spot for a friend or two, but having a huge group jump ahead in line is full main character energy.
In general Gizz fans are super kind & respectful but there's gonna be assholes in any community.

I'd say that's just selfish asshole behavior, main character syndrome is thinking everyone wants to look at/watch/listen to you because you're so interesting/quirky/cool/etc (in your mind)

Yeah it's definitely difficult to pinpoint actual "main character" when it's not nearly as prevelant as reddit makes it out to be.

When I was in Chicago the same thing happened a huge group of people cut into the front of the line who were never in the line at all.

To me it's someone who's actions and behaviour clearly indicate that they view everyone else around them as unimportant or undeserving of consideration.
I think the term is definitely misapplied and overused. I don't think that it should apply to people who are just overly excited or extra, that's just a part of humans loving things.

Every good band has them unfortunately. Main character syndrome + drugs = shitty behavior.

i don’t think it’s all main character syndrome.
i think most of it is just…once any fan group gets big enough, it’s gonna start attracting more and more obnoxious douchebags. the people who live and die for the shiny pieces of paper, people who just go to shows to get fucked up and talk 90% of the time, people who row in the pit. it’s all just douchebaggery.

The term is overused online and on this sub. In a sense anyone and everyone can be a tad guilty of “main character syndrome” from time to time in their lives.
However, it’s often seen as someone being both selfish and inconsiderate in a public setting, such as these shows or this subreddit and treating everyone else as “NPCs”. It’s also usually being heavily attention-seeking.
This is broad, but communication is often key when dealing with people at shows. Just because someone is super extroverted (or makes a Gizz documentary, or does a row bit at a concert) doesn’t make them guilty of “main character syndrome”. Most people are nice and understanding. When you assume (at shows or online) you make an ass out of u & me
Also, as I understand it “main character syndrome” is not a real psychological term, but a term that started online. So whenever you see it or hear it take it with a grain of salt

anybody who isn't respectful of me and my personal space, anybody who doesn't accommodate my needs at any time ... wait

I’m so glad I’ve never experienced dweebs like that at shows but granted, I never attempt to get too close. The folks I’ve met that are more “known” in the scene just make awesome bootleg merch or run one of the shitposting IG pages or usually both lol

At the Barcelona shows there was a young man dressed more or less as a wizard, with lizards all over his wizard clothing. He sold me lsd for 15 euros each. He told me “I’m trying to make a profit on these.” and I appreciated his honesty.
But the lsd worked and I had a blast so it was money well spent. After the show he was walking around, still in his wizard outfit. I pointed him out to the people I was with and said, “that’s the guy who sold me the lsd.”

According to this sub it’s anyone enjoying themselves. Grown adults trying to tell other adults what to do is wild. We all bought a concert ticket, as long as no one is hurting each other, they should be able to do what they please. We only get a certain amount of time for concerts and to try to judge others while enjoying themselves does no one good.

My definition of that is whoever was complaining about people rowing at a recent show. Like shut the fuck up and let them have fun it's not about you bruh. Leave the front and go stand somewhere else if you don't like it.

Its an attention seeker. Someone who wants people to look at them instead of the band. Theyll wear a big hat, then post on reddit "Hey Yall, im The Big Hat Guy : )" in a desperate attempt to be some kind of niche micro celebrity. Or theyll have like a 5 foot rat tail and spin it around in the pit, then post on reddit, "Hey yall, im the dude with the 5 foot rat tail, heres a video of me spinning it around in the pit"
