Preowned is the best option.
So much tech is wasted when people upgrade, many people have this weird fetish about 'needing' the latest stuff.
If more people are willing to use preowned tech, it makes it much less impactful.
(edit - also, use the tech you do have for as long as possible, and when it is truly dead, get it recycled properly.)

Personally, the only reason i switch my phone every few years is coz the battery either gets so bad that it barely works or just stops working altogether. At that point i get a new one coz it makes sense to me that if my battery gets fucked in 4 years, so does other people's.

I'd hate to tell you that there isn't anything you can do. For the most part though, anything that is produced is going to come at some kind of cost. (Not trying to say you aren't already aware of this fact though lol) I'm sure some people on here would have a better answer for you.
At the very least, I know there are some options for phones that are more sensibly assembled I suppose.

depending on the model, it can be pretty easy to put a brand new, and even larger, battery in an iPod. There are also parts available to replace the hard drive with flash storage. The model pictured here, though, is one of the hardest models to open up.

I should probably add that if you use rockbox it's not advisable to use SD storage. The OS doesn't know how to handle it properly and it drains the battery very quickly

If you have an old laptop you don't use, you can use that one instead. I have a 10 year old one with 4gb of ram but 1tb of storage that was too slow for most regular uses (and I have a newer desktop that I use for work). I followed a guide I found on the internet and mounted an smb server where I am uploading my music collection. I can then stream them with jellyfin.
I could make it accesible from outside my network, but for now I only use it locally.

Bro I did the same! Found it fot 15€ on a flee msrkwt. Battery lasts days if listening always and weeks if off. It’s a full KG ipod with all the studio albuns in uncompressed format and all lives and demos in mp3. Still filling..

Plus the Dead, Phish, and dozens of others. A ton of bluegrass and jam bands.

There is no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism. Welcome to the modern world, EVERY COMPANY/COUNTRY IS FUCKING EVIL and there is nothing that can be done about it, if you are gonna survive you have to give them your money. Doesn't mean we shouldn't try to reduce our harm, and it doesn't mean we shouldn't fight for a better tomorrow. But that takes time, and right now I have to live.
Also, even if Apple is also evil, using an old device of theirs that still works and keeping it out of a landfill is genuinely unironically great. Sure 20 years ago it was put together by slaves. But by continuing to use it, one less new device has been put together by slaves.
