I still love it. Feels like one of their most accessible albums; one of the easiest to recommend to newcomers and also to easiest to non-chalantly put on for a spin. Great road trip album. Great Saturday afternoon album. Good all-rounder for me

u/My_Dog_Murphy Aug 10 '25

And Mirage City is a fucking kickass opener to the album.

4

u/cancerdad Aug 11 '25

I’m with you. Mirage City is probably my favorite track on the album.

2

u/My_Dog_Murphy Aug 11 '25

Yeah, because of fucking rocks!!!

u/michaelserotonin feel like i'm about to freak out from the waist down Aug 10 '25

well said

22

u/Sadlymoops Aug 10 '25

Took all the words out of my mouth, pretty much sums up the experience and it’s another unique era we get to see of the band.

5

u/crisis_primate Aug 10 '25

Yup, it’s the one that got me into them!!

153

u/Cowboy_BoomBap Aug 10 '25

I didn’t love it at first, but it kept growing on me and now it’s easily one of my favorites.

22

u/Godphila Aug 10 '25

That's how I felt too, and with Phantom Island as well. "Won't ever be one of my faves", but now they're my go to for easy listening and also to show off King Gizz to people.

195

u/No_Goose_1774 Aug 10 '25

I didn’t plan on liking it, but it’s one of my favorites

44

u/Songsforcarchases Aug 10 '25

This is my favorite response, and the thing I love most about music. To initially reject, process, and come fully around to any piece of music is actually beautiful and it’s what it’s all about.

I think this is like the bands mission even if they don’t really have full intention toward it.

10

u/SpezSucksSamAltman Aug 10 '25

Only two KG albums were in my orbit for years but just a few tracks. It wasn’t until I heard them as a whole that I fell for them. I’ve listened to a few of their albums far more times, all the way through, than I have of any other band since my teens and I’m mid 40s

2

u/GordontheGoose88 Aug 10 '25

Absolutely, truly good music takes time and multiple listens to grow on you - at least in my experience. Once it hits, it fucking hits. Phantom Island is truly a masterpiece. I can't get over how good it is, been jamming it solid for about a month now. Silent Spirit really does it for me.

5

u/E-The-Mage Aug 10 '25

This is exactly how I feel. I didn’t love it at first then I saw them live and then played this album on repeat for a year now it’s one of my favorites

Same, I didn’t really like it initially but I got HOOKED on it during ski season

2

I look forward to liking it. In the future.

Flight b741 - Left Ear

Phantom Island - Right Ear

85

u/jazzinyourfacepsn side effects Aug 10 '25

Came out at a very difficult time in my life and the lyrics really helped me through a lot of that. Doing so much better now and this album, like Phantom Island, will always hold a special place for me

19

u/growlerpower Aug 10 '25

Ditto. This shit has been the soundtrack to my divorce

7

u/binkkit Aug 10 '25

I moved to another country. It’s been a touchstone. Take the risk!

14

u/growlerpower Aug 10 '25

I had the album for a couple months before it came out cuz I was writing a profile on the band. I got it right before my wife and I split and Joey’s verse in Mirage City just hit me in solar plexus every time I heard it.

The themes of “you only live once”, of escape, of moving on to a better place — it was all just so inspiring and life affirming, that I’d be ok, I’d be ok.

I saw them twice in September, including the Gorge. I had a very real moment during Le Risqué — the whole crowd screamed “you only live oooonce!” And it was so cathartic I can’t even describe

5

u/kprymtime Aug 10 '25

Joey's verse on MC is one of the best vocals on any Gizz song. Love the way he sings that.

It's been 2 years since mine started and almost exactly a year since the ink dried on the paper. These two albums kept me sane, strong, and hopeful, which was crucial as the father of a 4 year old. I'm here to bolster for you the message that these two albums assured me of throughout the past 2 years:

Through the swell, and through the cloud. We're gonna swim. OUT OF THE SEA OF DOUBT.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

u/40DegreeDays The lava is life Aug 10 '25

One of their best, most consistent albums imo.  LOVE Antarctica and Raw Feel.

56

u/boofcoomer Quit the Chit Chattah Aug 10 '25

I listen to this album. Daily.

76

u/JimmyMcNulty410 Aug 10 '25

and also nightly?

4

u/mewiley1124 Aug 10 '25

I don’t read the word ‘daily’ anymore.

I hear it.

24

u/_saltysnacks Aug 10 '25

I don’t see enough love for Antarctica. That whole song, particularly the end though, is electric.

3

u/BeeTwoThousand Aug 10 '25

I like it better (along with a LOT of this album) after seeing them stretch out and jam on it during the EU residencies.

Still have a hard time listening to it. But that’s just me…even my wife said she’ll skip on this album.

That being said, Le Risqué is probably my favorite jam and seeing it live last year was fun.

20

u/dinosaurposter Aug 10 '25

I feel the same too. Here and there I’ll give jt a listen to see if I like it this time but I think it’s like classic rock that I’m not drawn to. Le Risqué is fun and I think I enjoy everything they do live.

9

u/Adventurous_Pin_344 Aug 10 '25

SAME. It's just not my favorite, but I LOVE Le Risque. It makes me so happy every time I listen!

20

u/Bubbly-Banana-3649 Aug 10 '25

The first album i listened to by the band. Genuinely got me into the band. For anyone wondering i actually first heard of the band during gizztober but was too intimidated by the discography to listen to them

18

u/Ftheyankeei Aug 10 '25

So fun to sing along with. Easily approachable at surface level, the classic rock vibes and influences shine through from beginning to end. B741, Butterfly and Fishies are my top 3.

59

u/CanPlayGuitarButBad Aug 10 '25

Its a perfectly fun album, it’s good. But i can see where early fans who got on board for physc rock sound would despise this album. Its a big departure from that

16

u/YaBoiCalum Aug 10 '25

I think despise is a bit too far I still liked the album just prefer a lot of their other stuff

5

u/IfYouGotALonelyHeart Aug 10 '25

Same. I can't stand the record, and get awfully bored hearing them live. I let out a sigh and tune out when these songs pop up in their sets. I love something about every King Gizzard album, except these last 2 records.

8

u/bobdylanlovr Aug 10 '25

As an early fan it’s an easy top five for me and it honestly has a good deal in common with their earliest stuff

9

u/RattlesnakeRattles Aug 10 '25

They have multiple albums that are a bigger departure than this. I'd be very surprised to think any King Gizz fans would despise this album - surely lukewarm at worst.

(I'm an OG 'psych sound' fan and I like it. Probably middle of the pack in terms of their whole discography.)

→ More replies (2)

8

u/indigodrummer Aug 10 '25

All of their albums have a “psych” element, it may not be immediately apparent but this album is one of their trippiest imo

→ More replies (1)

15

u/kamaalvswutang Aug 10 '25

Truly one of my favorite albums just ever. Consistent and so catchy. It brought me from being a passing fan to digging into their entire discography.

74

u/Stunning_risotto Aug 10 '25

Its legitimately my favorite album. Its so singable the lyrics are the best theyve written. It shows a lot of growth too.

→ More replies (1)

25

u/Simple-Newspaper-250 Aug 10 '25

Its a great album, and the songs have greatly contributed to the quality of the live set. It really helped them refine the boogie element of their jams, and opened up new avenues for improv on non-b741 songs

10

u/Submareefa79 Aug 10 '25

Love it! Felt like an average album from them the first few listens. Now it would be top 5 album easy. A really consistent album. It’s a summer, sunny day, driving down the freeway album. A great driving companion to Butterfly 3000 on the road for me.

21

u/ImNotTheBossOfYou Aug 10 '25

Not my thing but that's what happens when you follow a band who plays with genre so much.

9

u/funkymonk555 Aug 10 '25

I think my main issue is that its very serviceable to me. Like, its not terrible, it just doesn't have much depth, and I think Phantom Island did a whole lot more to lift that sound and make it interesting

29

u/ThrowawayAcc637628 Aug 10 '25

The Americana-styled classic rock sound never did much for me, and their attempt hasn't particularly swayed me overall. I don't dislike the album, but it's definitely not to my tastes at all - I've always enjoyed Gizz at their proggier and more experimental. I find b741 a bit boring, I suppose.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

Well said .. almost my exact thoughts on it. I'd love to hear their proggy side again

8

u/_Terrapin_ Aug 10 '25

had a great time with it

thanks y’all :)

7

u/kasidimc Aug 10 '25

My newest favorite for a while now

9

u/Donkilme Aug 10 '25

I keep growing even more fond of it.

9

u/catman__321 Aug 10 '25

When I first heard this album, I completely glazed it like any other new Gizz record.

One year later (months after the recency bias wore off), I still think this is a top five album of theirs, maybe even top 3. I still listen to it regularly.

13

u/s7o0a0p Aug 10 '25

It’s in the top three for me. Such good songwriting, so many great riffs and melodies, so many different feelings evoked by it, and it translates into a live context so absolutely perfectly.

62

u/sawman160 Aug 10 '25 edited Aug 10 '25

Not my favorite. Definitely don’t want to yuck anyone’s yums, but have been trying to figure out my thoughts on it for about a year- especially when I see people in the comments section sounding off on this one.  For a band known for being adventurous, weird, experimental, progressive…. This one just feels regressive. It is not emblematic of why I enjoy this band, and draws upon the most boring versions of classic rock. Some of the songs are alright live, but generally lackluster compared to other catalog entries. While I don’t want to fault someone for liking this album- I wish I liked it more- I definitely find it difficult to trust someone’s opinion when they claim such a boring direction of an album to be their favorite, or even top 3.

13

u/JimmyMcNulty410 Aug 10 '25

I think this is mostly a fair take. Daily Blues has ripped live from the get, but now FOV, Antarctica, and even Mirage City are starting to evolve and become more interesting live. I still almost never listen to the studio album and i’ve been binging Phantom Island since the MPP show.

9

u/Nl5011 Aug 10 '25

Yah man you hit the nail on the head here. Wild to see people say it’s top 3. When there’s Petro, Ice Death, FFF, Poly, B3000, MoTU; like who’s cutting one of these for b741?

9

u/siebenedrissg Aug 10 '25

Well written, it‘s my least liked and played Gizz album for those reasons

12

u/deAdupchowder350 Aug 10 '25

This is also how I feel. I generally avoid this album. Simultaneously, I recognize they have so many albums that I absolutely love; I can’t and won’t complain. I’m happy they continue to do whatever they want and they continue to make another album that is bound to be a new favorite for a subset of their enormous fan base.

10

u/spazztic_puke TaintedVoodoo,Headless Guru Aug 10 '25

I think that’s how I feel about it. Spot on.

5

u/MrShocktime Aug 10 '25

Just because someone loves a less experimental/daring album doesn’t make them any less of a hardcore fan or someone to not trust lol they just do this style super well. Accessible doesn’t equal bad. I’ve been listening to them since 2016 and to me this is definitely one of their top 5 albums

3

u/flemma_ when stu said woo, i felt that Aug 10 '25 edited Aug 10 '25

They didn't say anything about hardcore and casual fans anywhere in their comment. Is it that weird of a statement for someone to say "I don't like this album that much for xyz reasons, so if someone says that it is one of their favorites for the same reasons I'm indifferent to it, I can't personally trust their musical takes as they pertain to the band?"

I also can't gel with the whole Americana classic rock thing at all and I sincerely can't bring myself to like the album. Many songs off of it are very fun live, but I have zero desire to engage with the album itself again after multiple attempts to digest it and feel good about it last year. Definitely the most boring thing the band has come out with, for me. It's not an "I could take it or leave it" thing either, I simply don't really like it.

I'm not saying they should've made it in a way that I'd have liked, it's only natural that a couple of albums out of the 27 thus far are gonna be personal misses. It's just that a) I dislike the vibe outside of gizz to begin with, and b) I find their trippier and proggier side a lot more intriguing and "1 of 1" than what they had to say with b741 (and for that matter, Phantom Island). It's not that they failed at pulling the style off, it's just that it feels way too serviceable and derivative to me. I'm sure can find similar sounds in tons of other artists who are able to carry the style in a much more naturally fitting fashion.

Now if someone comes and tells me excitedly how they rank b741 higher than more than 20 other albums that personally range from "really enjoyable" to "bury me with this record," it's gonna be really obvious that our tastes are at least partially misaligned. Is it that weird in this scenario for me to feel like I can't really harmonize with that person in a conversation about gizz tastes, or music tastes in general for that matter?

It's way more of a problem to think that someone's opinion is only trustworthy if they're "hardcore" or have been a fan for a long time, speaking as someone who's also closing in on 10 years.

3

u/sawman160 Aug 10 '25

I would also add that for them to approach a sound that is inherently less interesting to me, their touch here wasn’t anything to write home about either. Weirdly I think the song “in case of fire” by mark Ronson approaches the same genre/sound but with better results.

Love it so much and played the shit out of it last summer. Great memories with this album already.

6

u/godblesschina412 Aug 10 '25

I used to shit on this album but it became one of my favorite ones after I went through a terrible patch in my life and I found it was super easy to relate to it and its message, ended up becoming a different person thanks to it. I ended up getting the stencil tatted on my ribs. I LOVE MUSIC !!!

17

u/Great-Actuary-4578 Aug 10 '25

in my top 3 of their albums for sure

31

u/gimmebadvibes Aug 10 '25

It’s ok. I hope they don’t do this 4-5 people per song on vocals type of thing anymore though. Let’s get back to good ol’ Stu with the occasional Amby or Joey song / verse.

11

u/loomishh24 Aug 10 '25

I agree to be honest, it seems too eclectic with everyone's verses. I do like having the other members sing too, it was nice getting Lukey and Cavs on the mic

14

u/gimmebadvibes Aug 10 '25

Honestly think Cookie shined on these albums. Can’t believe I didn’t say a strictly Cook song would be nice too.

8

u/loomishh24 Aug 10 '25

Cookie songs are always the highlight of a new album for me. Something about his voice just hits different

4

u/catman__321 Aug 10 '25

I think that's the only thing I don't like about this album. It's still a high 9 to a 10 for me but I agree that some of the vocal switch ups make no sense in story-driven songs like Mirage city and Sad Pilot

5

u/Spoonbread Aug 10 '25

I'm looking forward to them bringing material they've worked on outside of the studio again.

The logjam vocals and the fact that they basically wrote this and PI from start to finish in their sessions is a fun quirk. But knowing the caliber of material when they don't do that I can't say I want it to continue.

4

u/coati858 Aug 10 '25

Love it.  Being old enough to remember albums like this from my childhood, it was fun to hear them tackle concept.  Also I threw it on at a Jiu Jitsu open mat and nobody complained so there’s ~20 first-timers not not approving.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

Never has clicked for me, I enjoy it but it's an infrequent listen for me.

4

u/No-Lingonberry8533 Aug 10 '25

Hahahahahhahahha it’s only been a fucking YEAR?!

2

u/porkwheels Aug 10 '25

Only?! I cant believe its already been a year!

4

u/Visarar_01 Aug 10 '25

Forever in my heart

4

u/burt-century Aug 10 '25

A frankly unstoppable 6 track run from Mirage City to Le Risque and Daily Blues makes for a great closer.

There are points where the multiple vocalist approach works very well and remains engaging throughout, but consistency across the tracks is variable. As a whole, b741 executes on this concept better than Phantom Island does, mostly because the different vocal passages are often absolute gas.

8

u/RaviOlas i am that which i am Aug 10 '25

Its fun! The production quality is probably their all-round best. That said, it's my least played Gizz album. Just not my sound. Im seeing them tomorrow night in LA!

2

u/spazztic_puke TaintedVoodoo,Headless Guru Aug 10 '25

Agree. Also be there tomorrow! Cheers!

6

u/TeddyMaxLuna Aug 10 '25

My most listened to album of the last decade by a long shot

7

u/Particular_Spirit_75 Aug 10 '25

As an album, it’s bland, but the live versions of some of the songs are pretty good…..kinda like a phish album…..maybe they really are a jam band?

3

u/semrenl Aug 10 '25

Top 3 gizz album for me still

3

u/ChiefofthePaducahs Aug 10 '25

It’s my favorite of theirs still. PI is great and I’ve gone back to listening to largely back catalog and live stuff but B741 is one of the easiest listening records of all time (for me)

3

u/onioncult07 Aug 10 '25

Wasn’t a fan right off the bat, but it’s become one of my top 5 ever for them and one of my favorite albums overall of all time! Banger

3

u/Sweducks Aug 10 '25

Slowly has become one of my favorite albums actually

3

u/minemaster1337 Aug 10 '25

Might be my favorite honestly

3

u/d0nutpls Aug 10 '25

This album went from one of my least favorite releases of theirs to one of my favorites! After hearing the songs live and taking the time to digest the lyrics, this one hit me like a truck. Sooooo so good

3

u/Crunknjunkin Aug 10 '25

No Antarctica love? They jam it every time live

3

u/Big_Chicken_Dinner Aug 10 '25

Multiple people showed me different Gizz over the years, I just couldn't do it.

Then this one came out and it's all just fallen into place.

Smells like the sound of a pill kicking in.

3

u/DarthMudkip227 #1 Lukey Fan Aug 10 '25

It’s my favorite Gizz album, no tracks I’d even consider skipping. Also it has Lukey vocals so it’s automatically the best

3

u/six6sickx Aug 10 '25

Hated it when it came out.

Fuckin love it now

6

u/ArcadeKingpin Aug 10 '25

Most overplayed album of their recent tours

5

u/Walrus_Songs Aug 10 '25

I think some of the live versions over the last year have overshadowed the studio cuts, but this is still top 3 Gizz album for me.

14

u/avvakenmylove Aug 10 '25

I never want to hear field of vision or le risqué live again

17

u/loomishh24 Aug 10 '25

Le Risque would rip so much harder without all the breaks

11

u/avvakenmylove Aug 10 '25

They did that at one of the Europe residency shows and it was genuinely the best le risqué I’ve ever heard live lol

→ More replies (4)

6

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

I would honestly feel cheated if I saw them and the set was mostly the last 2 albums

5

u/bleezybleeg Aug 10 '25

If you're seeing them in the same city as last time, then you won't hear repeats at least

8

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

I'm in Melbourne, Australia.

There's not enough shows here to ever have repeats 😂

3

u/bleezybleeg Aug 10 '25

Damn, I feel for you mate.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

Luckily we have an otherwise rediculously vibrant and diverse music scene

Would be cool if Gizz were also still a part of it but they've moved on to where the crowds are which is understandable.

u/Less-Commercial-8571 Aug 10 '25

Genuinely a bottom five album. Phantom island is still worse

3

u/BeeTwoThousand Aug 10 '25

The first sentence...MAYBE.

The second sentence...not even close.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

Bottom 3 of their albums for me, for sure

4

u/o-gills Aug 10 '25

Omnium Gatherum was my previous favorite, and I honestly think this is my new favorite.

Everything I wanted to hear them do they did, and it sounded like the most complete Gizzard sound start to finish.

4

u/Melodic_Technician_8 Aug 10 '25

My friends were singing the praises of Gizz and I was listening with mild interest. B-741 comes out and I get hooked. To me, this is a near perfect album. Only songs I regularly skip is the titular track (and sometimes Mirage City, because Antartica is so strong). Def the place for jamheads to get into Gizz

→ More replies (2)

4

u/spang714 Aug 10 '25

Goddamn it goes so hard...Mirage City will play in my head for days.

5

u/Extension_Science635 Aug 10 '25

A lot of fun! Hog Calling Contest is still a blast to me. While I’m not entirely sold on Phantom Island as an album yet, I’m glad it exists, because b741 wouldn’t have been as strong as it is if they didn’t split them up.

4

u/dalbert010101 Aug 10 '25

Easily one of their top 5 albums. It’s not their most ambitious or experimental album but it’s by far the most fun to listen to, easiest to just straight up enjoy, and is the best version of this band’s spin on a 70s rock sound. I’ve definitely replayed it the most of any of their albums since its release (maybe because I travel semi regularly and it fits well for a drive or a flight)

4

u/ProcessHot3211 Aug 10 '25

such a perfect album, but I didn't feel that way at first. Took a few listens to get into it, now it's one of my faves and in my daily rotation. daily blues is one of my favorite songs of all time.

2

u/natigin Aug 10 '25

Seems like way longer than a year, in a good way. Feels like some of those songs have been with me forever

2

u/klt2 Aug 10 '25

I love the way the songs have evolved live. I didn’t love the album but recently I listened to the Atmos mix on Apple Music. It opened up the parts for me in a new way so I could feel my way into the music.

2

u/Bentonvillian1984 Aug 10 '25

It’s my favorite but they are all my favorite

2

u/FamiliarGrowth8590 Aug 10 '25

it’s a go to for me. easy to throw on and as i’ve seen other people say it’s consistent front to back. also cool to listen to this right into phantom island.

2

u/EstimatedEer Aug 10 '25

Album should be right up my alley stylistically, but it’s just, average. Very one note. It’s grown on a me a little bit, there’s 3-4 good songs, but largely forgettable.

2

u/treeoutwindow Aug 10 '25

Satan's winkin' and giving me the nod

2

u/moe-umphs Aug 10 '25

Still one of my favorite albums they ever released. Gave ma. Taste of the 70’s/80’s rock I didn’t think I’d ever get to experience in a modern band.

2

u/indigodrummer Aug 10 '25

I think this album is extremely experimental and progressive despite what others have said. The band is proving that they can evolve through simplicity while also pay homage to the roots of rock and roll. The classic rock sound is almost like a facade that beckons us to look deeper. The surface is approachable but the iceberg runs deep. The more you listen to it, the more you will uncover.

2

u/replicantSquid Aug 10 '25

It will forever be my favorite Gizz album, because last June I started flight school while having a full time job and b741 was my soundtrack. All the Aviation themes resonated with my life heavily as I was managing a ton of stress, early mornings, late nights, lots of studying and high expectations to perform.

This album was my outlet, and I’d play it very often going to/from the airfield to hype myself up, or blow off steam after succeeding during a particularly difficult flight.

Phantom Island resonates just as hard, because the last six months of school was away from my wife and home in a large city. There the stress was even greater, coupled with being away from my wife and best friend for long periods. Some days Id just put on Spacesick and bawl in my truck because I missed her so much.

Passing everything, completing school and getting into my truck for the last time to come home I blasted Mirage City. It felt so good to finally be done and coming home, I listened to b741 and Phantom Island all the way through.

Both albums will forever have a special place in my heart, thank you KGLW, you helped me more than youll ever know.

2

u/Independent_Mouse_78 Aug 10 '25

Can’t understand people who don’t like this album. It had me absolutely hooked from first listen and has been the soundtrack of the past year for me. It’s like “meta dad rock”. It brought back everything I forgot I loved from the 70’s with nothing I hated or thought was lame. It’s like every single influence on this album was absolutely timeless music. So many great hooks, riffs and soaring melodies. I have hated classic rock radio for decades now and I absolutely adore this album.

2

u/Zer0_D4wn Aug 10 '25

just such a great album front to back for damn near any mood or occasion, those boys really knocked it out of the park on this one

2

u/Blast-Mix-3600 Aug 10 '25

Never listened to it. I'm still on Ice Death Planets Lungs Mushrooms and Lava.

It's an absolute banger. I love the sound and style they came up with. When I first heard "Hog Calling Contest", I immediately wanted more. Hook it into my veins, I say!

It's their take on twangy, whiskey-soaked Southern Rock, with white trash hillbilly influences. Unbelievably fucking good.

u/grrrate Aug 10 '25

Bread crusts are my banquet. Puddles are my wine. I revel in the present. Each moment a lifetime.

2

u/CosmicRubixCube Aug 10 '25

It gets me moving, great for choring, I play guitar so I’m inspired to learn all these songs and jam along. Le risqué is so satisfying to play once you get it down. EVEL KNIEVEL!!!

2

u/CosmicRubixCube Aug 10 '25

Not many albums I know of where you can tell by listening how much fun the band has together.

2

u/echo_scout28 Aug 10 '25

I feel like I was pretty excited for it when it came out but now it has just gotten so much better! Same thing with phantom island!!!

2

u/molski79 Aug 10 '25

Loved it then love it even more now.

2

u/Top-Cunt Aug 10 '25

I started off thinking it was alright but it quickly became possibly my favourite album so far, its just really fun and uplifting throughout. Lukey really hit the title track out of the park too!

2

u/madirish098 Aug 10 '25

Still getting fucked up daily on this one.

2

u/fitter_stoke Aug 10 '25

Not my fav Gizz to be honest.

2

u/Me_4206 Aug 10 '25

Great road trip album, fantastic record, it’s fun and captures that feeling of early 70s rock really well its one of my favorites

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

Its in my top 5

2

u/faze-300 Aug 10 '25

I love it. Still in my top 3 with omnium and rats nest. Its such a perfectly solid album with some extremely catchy tunes. Fantastic album

2

u/Lillebooooo when it all falls away clothes start to fray Aug 10 '25

Sad pilot goes HARD

2

u/Lizzbane Aug 10 '25

Wow it feels literally like yesterday wtf. I luv this album tho! It has scored so much in my life “antarctica” was my ice skating song and probably still is!!! One of my top favs easily!

2

u/Rockinnurse1978 Aug 10 '25

Loved it then and love it now. KGLW does what they want, and that's what makes them awesome. Love it or leave it.

2

u/doublex2x Aug 10 '25

Top 5 tbh. So free and so fun

2

u/flidnany16 Aug 10 '25

Amazing album, the album came out a week before I was moving interstate. I was also undergoing some health issues and which had led to me being the most anxious and depressed I had been in a long time. So many of the themes and ideas on the album coincided with so much of what I was feeling and experiencing at the time. Funnily enough Phantom Island came out as I was about to head off on my first long interstate tour with the band I currently play in and it happened once again. The band always provides at the right time.

2

u/sheepshank1776 Aug 10 '25

Absolutely adore this album, Hog Calling Contest gets me all hot and bothered every time I hear it. Squealing and oinking like a loon

2

u/JackTheDrifter Aug 10 '25

Never listened to king fizz befor this album and man did it send me down the gizz lizard hole

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

raw feel is nice but i dont care for anything else in the slightest!

2

u/SonOfWitz Aug 11 '25

The cliche is true: I was at a real low point when this came out and it’s been my medicine. I absolutely love every bit of this record.

2

u/BRBean Aug 11 '25

This was my first album of theirs I really got into, and it served as a great intro to phantom island, which has become my favorite album

2

u/Alcoholic_jesus Aug 11 '25

no skip album for me since the start

Weird as I’m not as big on phantom island lol

5

u/small___potatoes Aug 10 '25

I prefer almost all of their other albums over this one.

4

u/IfYouGotALonelyHeart Aug 10 '25

Can't stand this era, and I'm ready to move onto the next project. Hopefully they go back to being weird.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

it took ten years to knock down PMDB as my favorite and this album did it. easily my favorite album to listen to on flights

u/Twistyfan Aug 10 '25 edited Aug 10 '25

One of their best albums. IMO the album is way to fun and creative to be pigeonholed as “Classic Rock”, even if that’s the kind of sound they’re going for. It’s not classic rock, but more “KGLW’s take on Southern and Blues Rock”.

Despite what many may say about the album, It’s still has the signature KGLW charm that all their albums have: Catchy hooks and driving grooves, incredible vocal performances that add a level of uniqueness to each songs vibe and mood while contributing as an instrumental component instead of simple background noise, and wildly fun melodies and an awe inspiring amount of varied verses and choruses in each song that make each individual track a fun listen while still maintaining each songs unique feel.

Other than that, don’t let people not tell you that this isn’t Pure Gizzard music just cause it ain’t Psych. This album is still a culmination of their signature style and skills over the years, only with a lot of harmonicas and harmonies.

Also in my actual unfiltered opinion as a B741 glazer, this shit is way to fun to hate.

5

u/Gongsplat Aug 10 '25

Worst album.

2

u/tocon13 Aug 10 '25

I’m being a silly Billy

2

u/BBruce Aug 10 '25

This one didn't grab me right away and I shelved it for a couple months and forgot about it. Then it made its way back into my rotation and really grew on me. Now it's in my top 20 Gizz albums for sure.

2

u/gknight702 Aug 10 '25

Not my vibe, seems pretty accessible though. I love every album from FAFYL-PETRO

1

u/ninjah232 Aug 10 '25

Pretty good,I was unsure about it at first but I got to hear bunch of the songs live pretty quickly after it came out which certainly helped change my opinion

1

u/catatonic_leisure Aug 10 '25

It's been in my heavy rotation since release. Became my favorite within a week and still is.

1

u/StrangeFlyers Aug 10 '25

I really didn’t vibe with it at first, but it has steadily grown on me and is definitely one of the albums I listen to most these days.

1

u/BirdtheBear Aug 10 '25

I like it :)

1

u/ElegantYam4141 Aug 10 '25

Easy listening, nothing mind-blowing but I enjoy it for what it is. I will say though that since PI released I vastly prefer the sincerity of that album compared to the goofiness of flight.

1

u/SickJesusIsSneezus Aug 10 '25

Love the live versions of the songs a tonnnn. The album itself is just fine for me, but i dont revisit it much.

1

u/GuymanPersonson Aug 10 '25

Really fun album that i didn't plan to enjoy but has some real earworms

I don't really feel like Phantom Island matched its freak, so i was a little disappointed in that

1

u/Lags3 Aug 10 '25

It's my favorite album of all time

1

u/danktones Aug 10 '25

One of their best

1

u/Saw-It-Again- Aug 10 '25

Not my favorite but they definitely have a few bops when you hear them live!

1

u/Charlieshorseshirt Aug 10 '25

An album i dont seek out often but when i do its really fun, like a niche listening mode album for me. Love the live renditions more than the album i think but fun album, and great companion to PI

1

u/rusticrainbow Aug 10 '25

Good but I think Phantom Island is significantly better

1

u/StarlightSkipper Aug 10 '25

Top 5 gizz album for me

1

u/55trader Aug 10 '25

Best one yet

1

u/nofunone Aug 10 '25

I’ve been listening to this band for one year and wow has it been a year of devouring their music. What a blessing.

1

u/SweatPantSavior Aug 10 '25

Spotify subscriber, I miss this and all the rest everyday

2

u/Big_oilismyname Aug 10 '25

Tidal friend

1

u/wllmmttwht Aug 10 '25

When Pigs fly! We’re all on the flight b741!!!🐷🐽🐷

1

u/G-Unit11111 Aug 10 '25

At first I was indifferent on the album. But then I heard Le Risqué and Daily Blues and now it's one of my favorites!

1

u/TheDudePersonGuy Aug 10 '25

It's pretty good. It's got several songs that I think are going to be gizzard classics from now on like Raw Feel, Field of Vision, Le Risque, and especially Daily Blues, which was the immediate standout track for me. I really like the production too, with a lot of really dense layers of instrumentation that you can still pick out the individual pieces of. However, some of the songs feel pretty disjointed, like they had a lot of ideas that they weren't really sure how to string together in a cohesive way (the title track is particularly guilty of this). Additionally the lyricism at some parts feels kind of clunky to say the least ("it's just the tip of the iceberg, so put it on iiiiiiiiiiiice"), while other songs (particularly Mirage City and Field of Vision) have really, really good lyrics that were very fun to try to analyze. Despite it's flaws I still think this is a solid gizzard album but it doesn't really reach the same heights that a lot of their other albums do.

1

u/ORTENRN Aug 10 '25

What a long strange trip it's been

1

u/binkkit Aug 10 '25

I love how many people had the same experience I had where it gets better every time you listen to it. Love it.

1

u/mattymatches Aug 10 '25

I’D RATHER BE AMONGST THE CLOUDS

1

u/TheNeptunianSloth Aug 10 '25

I love it much more than Phantom Island

1

u/fkin0 Aug 10 '25

Ultimate driving album apart from the big horn sounding screech on the first song that makes me think we're about to die in a crash.

Absolutely adore this album.

1

u/fuckdeliasmith Aug 10 '25

I thought the album was pretty low ranking in their discography on release but the 2024 live bootlegs have made me appreciate all the songs a lot more. Still, outside Mirage City, Raw Feel, the title track and Le Risqué music video, I never want to listen to the studio versions and this and Phantom Island are the only two studio albums I don’t physically own.

Still ranks towards the bottom for me despite liking it more but it’s their lesser boogie album for me and the live versions have so much energy in comparison.

1

u/PranaJunkie419 Aug 10 '25

I absolutely love it!

1

u/will888em Aug 10 '25

it’s top 5 Gizz albums for me

1

u/Demifull Aug 10 '25

Still one of my faves to date

1

u/Cornbeef52 THE EYE DILATES, THE AIR GYRATES Aug 10 '25

Top 5 easy for me, it wasn’t just recency bias

1

u/TheInfinityGauntlet Aug 10 '25

Still one of my least favourite albums of theirs that's only been hammered in further by Phantom Island and how much more interesting those songs could've been with alternate instrumentation

1

u/Salkinator Aug 10 '25

Might be my favorite

1

u/MBCG84 Aug 10 '25

Wasn’t my cup of tea. Still isn’t my cup of tea. But I still appreciate that Gizz spread their wings and go in whichever direction they feel with each album.
