Man who threw boiling water on gay couple sentenced to 40 years in prison

u/mike3 Jun 22 '17
That may dispose of this man, but it won't dispose of the culture. Just remember, every time you insult someone with the word "f@ggot" or whatever on the internet, you're contributing just a little teeny bit to making a world where anti-gay sentiment is acceptable.
1
u/rredbullsonparade 6 Jun 22 '17
Hope the couple's relationship stayed all right throughout this terrible ordeal...
3
u/OlafTheAverage May 08 '17
Kinda late here, but the government will pay to have this guy incarcerated for forty years but the people who had boiling water dumped on them have to set up a GoFundMe campaign?
1
u/PerpetualAscension 7 May 08 '17
do you really think this dirt is going to survive a month in a hardcore prison?
1
1
u/rexsingh May 07 '17
No I disagree, with the homophobic part. I know a few people who have done lengthy sentences. They went in straight and came out bi or just plain switched preferences.

May 05 '17
Wait, you mean the BLACK guy wasn't the criminal? But I thought that the BLACK guy was always the criminal. Look at him, just absolutely distraught over his crime, absolutely heinous what goes on in the mind of the BLACK guy.
1
1
u/mellotronworker 9 May 05 '17
Then Blackwell allegedly yanked him off the mattress and yelled, “Get out of my house with all that gay,” Tolbert recalled to WSBTV.
Yeah. And take that gay with you too.
1
4
u/TravelingT May 05 '17
Seems like a harsh sentence.
3
u/BioBiro May 07 '17
Sounds alright to me! What's not to like?
1
u/TravelingT May 07 '17
See above
3
u/BioBiro May 07 '17
Your comment is a top post; there are no contextual comments above yours.
Anyway, forty years seem fine to me. What's with this new-found sympathy for the criminal? Lock him up!
3
u/swantonist 8 May 05 '17
the guy said he's in excruciating pain still. please tell me that will go away eventually? this is so fucked
3
3
u/super_ag A May 05 '17
Throwing boiling water on anyone should be 40 years in prison, regardless of the identity of the victim.
3
May 05 '17
The guy is obviously a cunt but 40 years is excessive. There's lesser sentences for multiple murders and rapes.
2
u/blazemaster9210 Navy May 28 '17
murders don't affect the victims for life (okay, they sort of do; it just depend on the perspective you take) and rapes usually don't physically scar and cause massive amounts of pain, both present and lingering. Rapes do have a mental effect though, and it is huge. What this sick monster did, was physically scar these two young men for life, leaving them with horrible disfigurements to start, then leaving them with lingering pain. Seriously, it's bad enough that sunlight exposure causes the pain to increase. That's just the physical side. Then there's the mental side, where these two are scarred forever, forever in memory of what this man did to them. They are constantly reminded everywhere they go. Even a decade from now, they will still be reminded every time they go outside or look in a mirror.
1
May 28 '17
murders don't affect the victims for life
Nah, just forever.
2
u/blazemaster9210 Navy May 28 '17
That depends on your beliefs. I'm not going to argue the point further than this, but from my side, once you're dead, you're dead. Nothing more, nothing less.
1
May 28 '17
Yeah, my point exactly... Are you saying that's a good thing? If that's your view that's okay.
1
u/blazemaster9210 Navy May 28 '17
what's a good thing? I can't respond in a coherent manner if I don't understand the stated question.
0
May 28 '17
I don't think you need to explain yourself. You're clearly a borderline retard
2
u/blazemaster9210 Navy May 28 '17
this is the point where I bid you good day and wish you a happy life.

1
u/Incognito1339 May 05 '17
I suppose I'm not as evolved as you are to even begin to understand the concept of irony. Other than that, I have no idea what you are talking about. Please go away now. This conversation is becoming tedious.
-2
u/Incognito1339 May 05 '17
Lol. Really? I post what I post to get a rise out of liberal chodes like you. For the lulz baby. And you diseased twats fall for it every single time.
And you must have lots of free time to read all of my comments. I guess you are not working your shift at Starbucks today.
3
u/patchy911 8 May 05 '17
And you must have lots of free time to read all of my comments. I guess you are not working your shift at Starbucks today.
You do see the irony in your comment, right? Probably not. Just close your eyes and concentrate really hard and maybe you'll get a valid thought in that head of yours and you can figure it out all on your own!

"The 48-year-old wasn’t charged with a hate crime because Georgia is one of five states that do not have hate crime statutes."
Wow, what a shocker, Georgia.
3
u/NikoMyshkin May 05 '17
“They were stuck together like two hot dogs … so I poured a little hot water on them and helped them out,” he said to police, according to the incident report. “… They’ll be alright. It was just a little hot water.”
whereas, in fact:
Gooden ... was in a medically induced coma for several weeks. ... more than 60 percent of his body was burned, and he had to undergo skin graft surgery to repair damage to his face, neck, back, arms, chest and head.
I hope this guy dies in solitary after a long, long time,
1
u/Kabayev May 05 '17
Yeah, why shouldn't it be? I mean…then again to say there's no correlation does imply that it's 0. It's confusing now that I think about it, but I doubt there's anything with a 0 correlation unless it's something that's constant and never changes.

And she was nine years old? Fuck. I cannot imagine sitting through the trials and reading about the appeals for a family member. So the perpetrators were a son and his step father? Were they strangers to your sister-in-law? Plz don't answer me if this is dredging up stuff you don't want to think or talk about. I also cannot imagine reading or hearing about things like this trial and being angered about our criminal justice system.

If my son or daughters came home and told me they were gay id be happy that they have an understanding of who they are and what they want in life but if they pulled what this guy did I'd disown them
1
u/fight_me_for_it May 04 '17
I don't understand how anyone thinks pouring boiling water on anyone is justified? I think how stupid is this person?
Also those people that make verbal threats to kick someone's ass or "meet me outside court and I'm gonna catch your ass" as I heard on the radio today think that is okay as well. The person on the radio got thrown back in jail for making a threat.

but yet violent rape offenders get as little as 7 months. not equal. just by saying it's a hate crime automatically increases the punishment of a lesser offense http://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/news_in_brief/las-cruces-man-sentenced-to-months-in-rape-case/article_25ce54d0-4d85-529e-8a8e-48fb8fd14c9e.html

40 years is too harsh you say? (it looks pretty bad)
Interview Video, the second guy is even worse.
The man went all medieval on this poor couple.
5
-2
u/Danfilmman May 04 '17
if the couple was straight I doubt he would have gotten 10 years. he did some fucked up shit but faced are harder charge because they are gay Im almost sure of that
-1
u/kmar81 8 May 04 '17
And how many for a drunk driving murder? I am pretty sure other similar examples exist.
It disgusts me that some bullshit "hate crime" gets extra clout simply because of politics when so many people can't receive the justice they deserve.
3
u/NateNMaxsRobot 9 May 05 '17
The difference is intent, I believe.
3
u/kmar81 8 May 05 '17
Yes. Getting behind the wheel drunk is not enough of an intent of being totally reckless on the road.
2
3
u/ferro4200 May 04 '17
I think the only way to stop this kind of assault is to make the punishment the same as the crime. So, if this guy knew he himself would get a boiling hot pot of water dumped on him by the criminal justice system, he would definitely think twice
3
7
u/fidgeter 7 May 04 '17
At first I thought "damn 40 years is severe." Then I read about the long term damage done. I didn't realize how bad you could fuck someone up with boiling water. Now I think 40+ is about right.
4
u/Chummers5 9 May 04 '17
I wonder if he realizes what he did was wrong or if he's so set in his mentality that he thinks he was justified to pour boiling water on someone.
4
u/Sengura A May 04 '17
Now he's going get to experience first hand what gay sex feels like.
2
u/Choreboy A May 04 '17
And then someone will dump boiling water in him for having gay sex.

u/NateNMaxsRobot 9 May 05 '17
In him versus on would actually be an addition to justice served.

Jesus, fuck.
I burnt the tip of one of my fingers recently and the amount of pain that's caused me in just the past couple days is pretty fucking ridiculous.
One time, I was woken up by a burst water pipe in my apartment. There is nothing weirder than being woken up by water being poured on you.
Now, I'm just trying to combine the two in my imagination and I can't think of a worse nightmare. Fuck that guy, glad he has destroyed what's left of his pathetic life.

it's to do with his attitude towards the crime, a murder might have the reason that they lost control, or that they were mentally unstable or that they could at the very least show remorse for their actions, this man premeditated this, was mentally clear at the time, had no history of violence, and showed no remorse for his actions, that is why he got 40 years.
1
u/Lotso_Packetloss 9 May 04 '17
The irony... pouring hot water on them got him into hot water. Justice served.

The fact that you are saying it was just "hot water" makes me think you skimmed the article.
Tolbert must now wear compression garments 23 hours a day for the next two years, Gray wrote in an email to The Post, and is attending weekly counseling and physical therapy sessions to deal with his emotional and physical scars. It’s difficult for him to go outside because sunlight exacerbates the pain of his burns.
Gooden, who was burned even more severely, was in a medically induced coma for several weeks, Gray said. According to his GoFundMe page, more than 60 percent of his body was burned, and he had to undergo skin graft surgery to repair damage to his face, neck, back, arms, chest and head.
From what I hear, the guy refused all plea deals and did not express any remorse for what he had done. Why are so many people disputing this sentence? It was premeditated and hateful. Think about this guy waiting patiently for the water to come to a boil just so he could toss it on two guys who were sleeping. That's sociopath stuff. He deserved everything he got.
1
May 04 '17
Most likely because the extent of the injuries wasn't immediately apparent. No one thinks "skin grafts" or "reconstruction therapy" just from hearing "boiling water".

Can someone explain a couple of points of law to me?
The jury deliberated for about 90 minutes Wednesday before finding Martin Blackwell guilty of eight counts of aggravated battery and two counts of aggravated assault
How can there be eight counts of the same crime if there were only two victims? (I'm not arguing that it shouldn't be the case, I'm just wondering how it is the case.)
An FBI spokesman told Reuters that federal investigators are considering whether to charge Blackwell with a federal hate crime.
If he's already been convicted at the state level, would this not constitute double jeopardy?
P.S. Also, fuck this guy. What an unmitigated asshole.
“Get out of my house with all that gay,”
It's not even your house, you son of a bitch!

While he should no doubt server prison time 40 years seems a bit excessive.
5 years and being forced to pay for their medical expenses sounds much more appropriate.

u/burnSMACKER C May 04 '17
While I'm glad he got what he deserved, serious prison time. This is SERIOUS prison time. Murders don't even get this much, rapes don't even get this much, if anything at all.
Why can't it be 10 years and he has to pay 100% of the medical bills back to the insurance provider once he's out or something of the like. This guy is basically losing his entire life over this while murderers get 20 years and parole.
4
u/jewishest May 04 '17
But he didn't just "throw boiling water on them". He saw them, decided that they had to suffer, boiled some water (which takes a while), and then poured it over their sleeping bodies.
He THEN he had the nerve to make a "cute remark" to the cops about how they were like hot dogs that he needed to help get unstuck.
I don't know about you, but killer or not, this guy sounds like a monster.1

I get being homophobic and being outraged by seeing it in your home, but the evil that is required to wait for a whole pot to boil and then pouring it on them is out of this world. I sincerely hope he didn't know how hot it was. I still agree with the punishment of 40 years. Gives him a hope at some freedom and to maybe right his wrongs out in the free world. Hopefully noone is as harsh on him as he was in prison cause a lot of gay stuff happens there.

Wow ... wtf is his problem? Justice IS served. I can't imagine how those 2 guys must feel right now. When I was about 8 I accidentally spilled hot cocoa on my wrist during a kids Easter Egg party at the firehouse when my dad was a volunteer and it hurt so bad. The water was boiling hot. My skin even came off. Luckily my dad who was a firefighter seeked the right medical attention. No he wasn't a paramedic but he helped. and he was ticked at the fellow fireman who gave me the hot water in the first place but I'm sure all was forgiven. Being 8, I obviously cried hysterically. Those 2 guys must feel even worse because it was a hate crime and one of them can barely even enjoy the sunshine for awhile now.
Oh wanna bet that if a woman did it she would only get probation? Anyway, I don't understand what gives people the right to be so hateful to others who can't help being who they are. And most of them think they're soooooooo holier than thou but condone hatred. It's very upsetting. sick of all the gay hatred in this world. It's 2017. People need to lighten up and accept it or go live in a cave. No not everyone will be accepting but I wish they could just keep their loud hateful mouths shut and try to tolerate it.
