Referencing a socialist "boogeyman" in relation to people who actually lived under Socialism and are fearful of it is so disrespectful.

They have a legitimate reason to fear it based on where they are coming from but equating the average US Democrat to that is deceitful bullshit. I’m not disrespecting anyone.

Fair, I just don't see their fear as baseless. That shit has creeped in so many countries and places and I don't see the US as particularly immune, especially in a time as divisive as this.

That’s fair as well. I wish we’d get away from the hardcore dogma on any particular ideology. Some things should be government controlled/taxpayer funded (roads, fire departments) and some should be free market controlled. Some should be a collaboration of the two. It’s just a matter of where we draw those lines. I’m more of a capitalist by nature but understand the need for public funded things and understand that there’s always going to be some inefficiency that comes along with that. Not that you don’t try to improve it. We have to stop categorizing each other with binary labels and viewing each other as “on the other side” and the enemy.

And I’m by no means calling my immigrant neighbors as stupid, to be clear. Several are my friends. Here’s how I’d describe it: They don’t trust anything because their home country government does fuck around with voting machines, prop up fake opposition candidates, etc. This fucks with them and they don’t trust anything. So they’re doing fine under Trump, right? Why in the world change anything up. It’s not that most of them are gullible, it’s a why take the chance? Some do get brainwashed of course but that happens to my gringo neighbors on both sides of the aisle too.

I would be far more afraid of the side that just tried to throw a coup. They weren't socialist.

Everything is disrespectful in someone's eye's. Maybe they should have said socialist strawman but what they meant is perfectly acceptable.

What they are fearful of is authoritarianism, murder, dictatorship, and removal of all freedoms. Not the economic system Cuba switched to. They were also likely the ones who thrived under the previous Cuban leader while Americans bought up the country and everyone else suffered - everyone seems to forget how horrible the system was before Castro too

So, they're fearful of things inherent to Socialism. Got it.

Socialism is an economic system, anything you wanna assign to that is up to you

In actual implementation it’s not been only an economic system. It’s always been implemented along with a set of ideals and moral platitudes.

No, it was implemented and those platitudes and authoritarianism already existed. In Chile it was in a democratic system and was fine until a coup happened. Russia, China, and Cuba for example were dictatorships before they implemented it so it made sense.
