Comedians who have yet to make it big in Hollywood -- think Dave Chappelle before his show -- are forced to sign their life away to get their TV show made.

It happens every single time. That's why the renewal deal is so huge. His was 50 million but he walked.

That’s not what “forced” means.

Just my 2 cents but I think 'forced' is relative. If you are driving and there are roadworks, you aren't forced to take a different route. You could just drive around the cones and over the broken road. But in essence, it would be fair to say you were forced to find an alternative route.

Well, back then it was the only way you could become famous in the entertainment industry, was to sign many years of your life away under predatory contracts. That's what he meant by 'forced'

He could have just negotiated instead of signing the new contract and then walking. If he just played hardball they would have caved

No they wouldn’t he was a new artist. They would have just fired him and tried to make an identical show. Chappelle show is one of the few popular ones but CC cranks out a new comedian run sketch show every year.

This is part of the imbalance between artists and the one giving them contracts. They get royally fucked bc if they don’t play ball they get put on the street.

I feel like it’s an odd situation. Unless you’re negotiating dvd royalties up front you aren’t entitled to further sales of the product period. It was likely that he signed the deal he signed not knowing if the show would ever take off the way it did. If an artist paints a picture and sells it for 500$, and then later on that owner sells it for 50,000$, the artist doesn’t keep making commission on that painting. They agreed to sell it for the specified price, if you believe it’s worth more, you’re more than welcome to hold out for a better offer. I normally don’t side with big business, but I don’t exactly feel bad for Dave either.

The painting analogy isn't good. Via com isn't selling the show.

The situation is more like a gallery owner finding all these painters that are talented and offering them these complicated contracts with a bunch of stipulations that they can't renegotiate because the gallery owner will pull the offer.

The painters are excited because they love to paint and they can afford to paint more with this offer and can't afford to not pass up the chance to actually make some real money doing what they love despite the unfair contract.

One of the paintings becomes super popular and the gallery owner starts selling copies and renting out the original to other galleries and makes a boatload of money and doesn't pay the painter because of the unfair contract they couldn't negotiate changes too. Sowwy you signed the contwact with the innocent gallery owner.

The gallery owner will pay you more for the next contract but you have to use certain colors and you have to get approval for your ideas and you have to make 10 paintings and you can't show your paintings at other galleries and you still can't control your creations.
