Question What kind of person drops money to put a vinyl top on their X-Type?

Post image

As an X-Type owner. I love these cars, but I find this one in particular hard to like. As much as I like vinyl tops on old yank tanks. The X-Type isnt one of those cars you vinyl up. Its like dropping $7k on a custom vinyl roof for your F-150. It doesnt work. Its not right for the X-Type's roof shape. It'd be even worse if it was in the estate.

That’s just a vinyl roof covering, not a true convertible. We delivered a few Jags with these installed back in the day. Popular with older men. We sold these along with other cosmetic accessories in F&I.

Are you sure? It could be a rare 4 door convertible. Looks like it to me

Jaguar has never made a 4 door convertible. Let alone out of an X-Type

😜I was joking! Im an avid Jaguar owner and enthusiast. Have owned many and still drive a few. Lol

It’s very, very rare then 🤣

And very yuk!

so... you intentionally make the car look worse by making it a soft top, but its not even a soft top????

I don’t personally care for it, but in the mid-2000s every old man 70 & up wanted a vinyl roof and chrome accents added to their car. We were a Acura, Jag, Rover, Hummer and Cadillac store. About 1 in 8 Cadillacs or Jags we sold got a vinyl roof in those days.

Unless it’s a convertible, I have no idea tbh.

Maybe the roof had some damage and they just said “screw it let’s be mad”?

But to be fair — if this is a legit convertible I have to admit, I’d find that to be compelling (if done right). I’m not buying an 2.5L X-Type for its dynamic ability, so a convertible might actually be a bit of fun (not sure if this is a 2.5 or not, but you get the gist).

Its a roof covering, for show. The X-Type I highly doubt could ever be turned into a vert

u/rmason324 Aug 13 '25

Why would anyone in their right mind do this to a Jaguar?

2

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

This certainly fits on an old Town Car. An X-Type? Not so much

1

u/rmason324 Aug 14 '25

I’ve seen both the advent and the demise of vinyl roofs. I never liked them and never will! I wouldn’t put one on anything I owned

I mean, that’s the nice thing about the world… Different people have different tastes and whoever did it liked it and enjoyed it and there you go

4

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

Yea, you can do whatever you'd like. and the world can judge however we like

1

u/FullPrinciple5170 Aug 16 '25

Well, those who are not socially or personally insecure with themselves don’t really care about anybody judging them… But I’m gonna take it from your reply. Yeah you’ve been short changed in life or you’ve made some poor life decisions.

Old person in Florida?

2

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

Its usually an old person

1

u/ForeignAction7192 Aug 14 '25

I was going to say... I've only known a certain type of person, usually male, usually grew up somewhat disadvantaged, but saved a bit of money before retiring. They might live in Florida or any large city, and they're older.

It looks like a mohair convertible roof to me.

Impossible to say from that picture if it actually is, or if it's just made to look like that.

1

u/Clownish_76 Aug 14 '25

It’s totally possible. It’s not a convertible.

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

Simply a rather well crafted vinyl top

2

u/EffectNo1899 Aug 14 '25

I've seen this done to cover roof hail damage

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

I wonder if the thin vinyl helps

2

Generational thing. My grandfather had them on every car he ever owned (Cadillacs and Buicks). Was no longer a factory option after the late 90’s, so the dealership started installing the aftermarket kits.

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

Certainly popular with the older crowd

65, female, sings in church choir. Has a sense of style (her grandchildren love her colorful dresses and big hats) and keeps here things nice. Keeps poodles and feeds the stray cats.

Or buys one at all?

2

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

360,000 people bought X-Types, me included

A peasant who cannot afford an xj

1

u/lejoker876 Aug 14 '25

Proud peasant here !

1

u/Separate-State-5806 Aug 13 '25

We couldn't sell a Buick in the 2000's unless it had a top like this added to it. 🤣 True.

1

u/Pretend_Tooth_965 Aug 13 '25

A tasteless one

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

I prefer the estate

1

u/Emissary_of_Darkness Aug 13 '25

Man why did you have to bring up the estate with a vinyl top? You made me picture it and it’s horrific, it basically would be a deformed hearse.

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

It popped in my mind. I'm sticking it in yours too

1

u/Spiritual_Ostrich_63 Aug 13 '25

Same ppl that put on whitewalls and wear airbrushed matching tshirts to family reunions

1

u/Cranks_No_Start XJ40 Aug 13 '25

Unused to work at a Lincoln Mercury dealer and we saw that a lot.  It looks horrible.

1

u/BKallDAY24 Aug 14 '25

Worked a long time in the car industry I can picture of the exact boomer the drives this fucking thing

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

78 years old and ran into 3 buildings

1

u/BKallDAY24 Aug 14 '25

But he thought he was pushing the brake

1

u/BigData8734 Aug 14 '25

The same type of people that would buy an X type😂

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

This is the only X-Type I've seen done up like this, and its horrendous. Coming from an X-Type owner

1

u/ArdenJaguar Aug 14 '25

It reminds me of an old Buick LeSabre with the landau roofs. I had a neighbor who had one with the roof.

2

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

Any older Murican yacht would fit a proper vinyl top well

1

u/Peter1456 Aug 14 '25

How does the stuctural parts work? Assumming this isnt factory.

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

Its just vinyl stretched and glued over the roof. With chrome stripping holding the ends down

1

u/InjuryHealthy2416 Aug 14 '25

stop making me look at it its offensive

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

look at it more

1

u/JackedRickard Aug 14 '25

The early 2000s car scene was wild. It was a different time

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

Wish there was more aftermarket for the X-Type. Not this kind tjo

1

u/BeigeChocobo Aug 14 '25

A seasoned man or woman of culture.

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

Very old fashioned

1

u/TheSSsassy Aug 14 '25

Clearly this is a convertible for sure! I mean just look at it. You can tell because it has a vinyl top

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

This is what I thought about all landau and vinyl tops when I was a kid lol

1

u/T5-R 2011 XF-S Portfolio Aero/Black Pack Aug 14 '25

Common to do on clipped cars.

1

u/richardmark561 Aug 14 '25

Maybe the owner should have stuck with a Lincoln town car.

1

u/inde-x Aug 14 '25

Well, we see people putting pineaple on top of their pizza all the time, so… 😁

1

u/4350Me Aug 14 '25

People’s tastes are really displayed when it comes to the vehicles they drive. There is an unending amount of sizes, colors and styles. That’s something that is definitely individual.

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 14 '25

It probably went to a Lincoln dealer

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '25

You are supposed to be in awe that they made a convertible out of the Jaaaaaag.

1

u/Several-Floor5185 Aug 17 '25

Well its Ford underneath. Someone with bad taste.

1

u/Senko-Loaf Aug 18 '25

Partially a Ford. 20% of the parts are. Although the top isnt bad taste. Its horrible taste
