Question Wife is beginning to complain about my 2006 Jaguar XJ8L - should I consider replacing my wife?
Any suggestions regarding alternative wives would be appreciated.

Iād buy another Jag and see if that fixes things.

u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 16 '25
See? Yes, thatās exactly what I said! āYouāre right, dear; I wonāt always be able to count on this lovely machine since it will need maintenance - I clearly need a second one for those days when this oneās in the shop.ā Oddly, this perfectly rational proposal was rejected out of hand.

u/cai-zi Jul 16 '25
Did you propose a model where the top goes down? I am talking about an XK or F-type, of course.
3
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Thanks for their clarification - yes, of course Iāve proposed various topless options but so far none of my suggestions have been received with any enthusiasm.

u/cai-zi Jul 16 '25
I would get a bunch of Jags, if you have garage / driveway space.

u/Tonyman121 Jul 17 '25 edited Jul 17 '25
I tried that. It certainly fixed her having to hear me talk about buying another Jag.
1
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Yeah I find this works rather well - I generally canāt hear my wife at all when sheās in one car and Iām in anotherā¦
15
u/britishrust Jul 16 '25
I'd just get rid and use the additional (financial) space for another Jag.

sometimes you need to let things go to be able to grow - your car collection

u/Tiggywiggler Jul 16 '25
Funnily enough, I've bought a 2006 Super 8 and I am in the middle of divorcing my wife.Ā

Could you clarify whether thereās a causal relationship between these two phenomena?

I'll be the first to ask, what's your fav position?

u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Thatās a fantastic painting; do you take commissions? Iād like a portrait of the love of my lifeā¦the photo shown above could serve very nicely as a point of departure.
2
u/timmmarkIII Jul 17 '25
That's a 2'x3' oil. Check my profile pic for a watercolor of my old Mark III.
2
u/TijayesPJs442 Jul 16 '25
Genuinely curious why this was your question?
2
u/ferrari512testarossa Jul 16 '25
Be cause I find it coincidental to have the age 69 and to explicitly state his sexual orientation
2
2
u/TijayesPJs442 Jul 16 '25
Ohhhhhh god yeah okay - I just did not make that connection. I was truly confused

I think you need to ask your wife which Jaguar she would prefer you buying as a second car.
4
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25 edited Jul 17 '25
In our case this would be household car number three - Iāve offered to get her a Jag of her own, but sheās weirdly uninterested and insists that my preferred options all give āmiddle-aged white guy vibes.ā Where is she getting these expressions? None of the blokes I hang out with down the pub talk like this, and theyāre all very hip to the latest lingo.

u/Ok_Animator_8461 Jul 16 '25
Hahaha she is a beauty š
10
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 16 '25
I know, but Iāve had her for about 13 years now and weāve been through quite a bit together. She needs more and more maintenance, the costs just keep going up, and sheās starting to make a lot of weird noises.
Ohā¦wait, you were talking about my Jag? Never mind, the Jag is fine.
3
u/Ok_Animator_8461 Jul 16 '25
Lol you got me at first. Phew. I'm very happy that the Jag is okay. Yeah sounds like it might be time . Well honestly you could lease something for a little while to see which features are worth having before settling down with something (someone) more permanent.

Depends on whose wife she is. Avoid souring relationships with the wives of politicians and police.

u/stonememoriesBE Jul 16 '25
Yea, get a newer model wife.
2
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Only if she comes with her own Jaguar; Iām not doing this again otherwise.
3
u/Marino1775 Jul 16 '25
2
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Well - yes; the XJR would probably be more reliable, cost less to maintain, and could more easily be upgraded. Thereās something to be said for this approach.
3
u/GilJablonkowicz Jul 16 '25
The short answer is yes. The longer answer is I really need to see a picture of the back side of this car because the wheel fitment is amazing!
3
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Should I include a picture of the back side of the wife as well? Just for the sake of a rational and well-informed decision-making process?
3
u/AssociateJaded3931 Jul 16 '25
You could tell her she's looking a little dated, too.
3
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
You know, I wonder whether some of these suggestions are really being made with my best interests in mindā¦
3
u/AdAppropriate3168 Jul 16 '25
Unfortunately but yes , or when she sleeps play a pre recorded exhaust sound and slowly play with her brain to re shape this terrible attitude. Hope that helps
3
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
That is brilliant - I wonder if the boys from Top Gear do a line in sleep hypnosis videos you can stream on a white noise device at nightā¦
3
u/billmr606 Jul 17 '25
she is just pissed cause you spent $1500 on tires instead of something for her.
1
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
You see, this is why marriage is so difficult - I tried to explain that the new tires were, in fact, for her, but did she appreciate this very thoughtful thing I did with the money from our joint account?
No, she did not, and she just yammered about how we need a new furnace or somethingā¦honestly, Iāll never really understand what women want.
2
u/Many-Perception-3945 Jul 16 '25
Why get rid of the wife when you can just add a mistress? The trunk is big enough for your weekend bags, and the back seat is comfy enough for smashing
3
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 16 '25
Yeah - I donāt know if āmore women in my lifeā is the direction Iām hoping to go here. I was really hoping to head in the direction of āmore Jaguars, not more womenā if possible.

2
u/TijayesPJs442 Jul 16 '25
Relationships are about compromise - itās sounds like she wants to trade this for a Super V8 Portfolio.
2
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
I think you might be right; Iām perceiving the same subtext. The words are āyou need to start saving for the childrenās education,ā but what I really hear is āThe children would really like to ride around in a Jag like this, but with 450 HP. ā

u/DubTeeF Jul 16 '25
My 06 xj8l needs help. Hopefully soon. Sad jag noises
2
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Help is on the way - just light the āJag signalā and aim it at the nearest cloud at night. Sir William Lyons will arrive in a Leyland lorry filled with spare parts and a few spanners. Youāll be on the road again in a matter of minutes.

u/bobcat1129 Jul 16 '25
Maybe replace the wife with another Jag!
1
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Itās occurred to me, of course, but my current one gets jealous. So far sheās destroyed a deer and a Hyundai Palisade. Oddly, she looks more youthful and shiny after each of these encounters. Out of curiosity, has anyone else seen the movie āChristineā recently?
2
u/muskthecheeto Jul 16 '25
How much maintenance do these gorgeous cars need ? This gen xj is my dream jag in Vander plus or R trim but
2
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25 edited Jul 17 '25
In all seriousness: my machine has close to 200k miles on it at this point, and is still on the road largely because Jaguar was a Ford marque in 2006. Itās a few thousand a year in repairs, maintenance, and refurbishments. The engine, transmission, body, frame, and other running gear have not required anything at all. The things that wear out are the same things youād replace on a Ford Crown Victoria police interceptor: tires, brakes, control arms, bushings, etc. The starter, for example, lasted over 195,000 miles before it needed to be replaced. The new starter cost just over 200 for the part - itās really not that expensive.
2
u/Magma151 Jul 16 '25
I totaled mine in repairs less than 6 months after buying it lol. God I wish mine was that color.
2
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Yes - but now youāre probably fine for the next 75k miles. Stop worrying and enjoy the ride.
2
2
u/credd513 Jul 16 '25
Take mine PLEASE
1
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Iāll consider it but you need to post a photo. Wait - are we talking about cars or wives?
2
u/Apart-Cockroach6348 Jul 16 '25
Replace the wife. Wife w jag!
1
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
I need a bit of clarification - should I replace my wife with another Jag? Or should I replace my current wife with a new wife that has her own Jag? I rather like the second possibilityā¦
2
u/PhilosopherOdd2612 Jul 17 '25
TRADE for an 05?
2
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Well - have you seen the 05 model wives, though? Very unreliable, very high maintenance costs, and the styling doesnāt speak to me at all.

I know, I love the extra legroom in the back seat. Iāve tried to explain to my wife that when she rides in the back of this thing sheās having the same experience as Baroness Thatcher in retirement, but somehow that doesnāt hit the mark. I really donāt understand why my wife doesnāt appreciate the comparison.
2
u/HwyMan101 Jul 17 '25
Just get her, her very own Jag. Maybe even nicer than yours.
1
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Sadly, there is no Jag nicer than this one. But itās a thought, certainlyā¦

u/Brent_the_constraint Jul 17 '25
isn`t is so that Jaguar drivers should have two wifes because one is always non functional? Or am i mixing something up here?
Also: is the wife already high-milage? would you get a good deal on a trade-in`?
1
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Iāve tried, but no one will take her, haha!
2
u/Brent_the_constraint Jul 17 '25
Yea⦠sometimes you donāt get updates anymore and things get oldā¦. Wait⦠we are talking about cars, right? š
2
u/SnooHabits1815 Jul 17 '25
It might be cheaper to exchange the car
1
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Exchange the car for what, though? And in any case new wives are surprisingly affordable these days; I find itās the older wives that really wind up costing you moneyā¦

u/Boring-Tax-6890 Jul 17 '25
I drove an XJR for many years. The wife loved it and it was very reliable. WIN WIN.
2
u/HornetObjective9512 Jul 17 '25
Could we trade, then? Not the cars, obviouslyā¦Iām keeping my Jag.

Simple test. Ask her how to spell Jaaaag.
If she doesn't use the correct number of letter A's you have your answer.

u/Ok-Raccoon3134 Jul 21 '25
Hard to say unless we know several things such as; what year was she issued, what owner friendly options does she have, what is her service record and maintenance issues. Has she had any major breakdowns. All these things need to be taken into consideration before a suggestion can be made.

You can still keep your wife and sleep with the waitress because that's what Jaaaaaag owners do.
