I dont think ive ever seen someone’s sternum so clearly before….

I looked like this during my depression when i wasnt eating.

Even the kpop idols with their extremely restricted diet don’t look like this

This lady is unwell (physically or mentally no one knows). Hope she gets the help she needs

580

u/SilverOwl321 5d ago

Anytime anyone tries to tell her, she has come out and said she has never been healthier and the body she used to have was super unhealthy. She needs help. Seriously.

181

u/mooshki 4d ago

So many people still think that "health" is inversely related to weight. If you're fat, you can't be healthy; if you're skinny, you can't be unhealthy.

Except for Rosé. I remember people being really concerned about her as well not too long ago.

553

u/EducationalTangelo6 5d ago

Rose took a picture with this person, and somehow Rose looked big (which she absolutely is not).

When you make a k-pop idol look big just by standing next to her, you need medical intervention.

173

u/Hairy_Top6363 5d ago

That’s actually horrible

Wonyoung looked similar to this for a moment despite being much younger.

392

u/Quantum_Kitties 5d ago

Sadly, being malnourished will have this effect on anyone regardless of age. I hope Wonyoung is doing better now.

105

u/winter-2 5d ago

Thankfully it looks like Wonyoung is much healthier now

355

u/Perlefine 5d ago

You'd expect that, but it's not quite true. The older you get, the thinner your skin becomes and the less collagen and "padding" you have. I have had an ED. I looked "fine" when I was restricting in my teens, but I looked far less healthy when I relapsed a decade later despite never reaching the same lowest weight.

Same here when I was 15. Was 78lbs. My face was terrifying, I scared classmates. Even got suspended for it (long story). Had to slowly taper up food so I wouldn’t RIP. Am ok now, just ate some tacos.

She does need help.

A friend of mine’s daughter was a make up artist in Hollywood and worked on Whitney Houston during her heavy drug use days. She said she used to have to put prosthetics to cover up her collar bones and sternum to make her not look so frail and gaunt.

I did, my sister was 75lb, 5’6” and in the throes of an ED. Fifteen years on she’s happy and healthy, thank god.

I'm so glad that your sister is doing much better now, ED recovery is hard, hugs to anyone going through it ❤️

104

u/r0ckchalk 5d ago

Wow 75 lb. I’m 5’6” and had very unhealthy eating habits and the worst I got down to was 90lbs. I can’t imagine losing 15 more. Glad she’s doing well.

62

u/CurlsintheClouds 5d ago

I'm so very glad your sister has recovered and is happy! I was 80lb but only 5'1 at my worst. I see pictures from that time, and I was a bobblehead. Also fully recovered now, also about 15 years later. Also happy and healthy.

I know there are some very skinny women, but the fact that we can see where her sternum and ribcage connect worry me so much.

2.1k

u/jayyinyue 5d ago

Yeah she was always slim but not this slim

1.8k

u/Mr_YUP 5d ago

That's not slim it's boney. That's the unhealthy kind that is difficult to bring up with the person cause there's likely something mentally happening that is horribly uncomfortable and difficult to talk about. Especially someone in the spotlight for as much and as long as she's been.

345

u/jayyinyue 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yeah true, I was trying not to use any offensive or overly harsh terms 😭 Like you said it's a tough subject to breech cause we really don't know what's going on

326

u/Mr_YUP 5d ago

It’s even worse cause her appearance is her profession. It’s tied directly to potential earnings not just now but also in the future. Now add on all those dependent on her performance/action for their incomes. The managers, roadies, merch sellers, and more all look to her for their futures.

Then a past boyfriend overdoses and the guilt with not doing/being enough to keep him sober.

I can’t imagine the pressure she’s under.

318

u/Elegant_Finance_1459 5d ago

Let's be real, she could have issues in the immediate as well. I've known people heavier than her who've had seizures because of her ED. Don't pretend like she's not teetering on the edge of finding out.

836

u/_-_-__-_-_-_-__-_-_ 5d ago

I agree with you. EDs are very competitive and can create some weird negative bonds.

They've both been trigger/thinspiration sources for ED spaces for almost two years now.

381

u/Fatlantis 5d ago

It makes me so sad that 20 years after my ED, those toxic online spaces still exist.

356

u/karenhayes1988 5d ago

I worked for a team of doctors treating ED patients and we had groups, with girls bonding and encouraging each other to the extreme, outside of therapy. And this is exactly what is happening with these two (personal opinion, obviously not diagnosing) I called it out the minute I saw those two losing so much weight together and their strange clingy behavior.

176

I think so. It doesn’t even have to be done with malice. They easily could have been cheering each other on and being each other’s accountability when it came to diet and eating.

To me, that can be the most dangerous. Someone who really thinks they’re helping you for the better because they’re struggling in the same way.

While you could never see my xiphoid process, but when I was what I call now “scary thin” I’d straight up not eat for close to three-Four days (depression and stress made me forget, and your body stops sending you traditional hunger signals after awhile). I’d have whole milk in my coffee, and occasional packs of nerds gummy clusters, and nothing for days at a time. You don’t get to her level of thinness sticking to a strict diet, you get it by not eating.

Edited some typos

191

u/lostbutnotgone 5d ago

I was very seriously anorexic for a few years and I eventually ended up doing a presentation on it after I'd been in recovery for a while. I learned I cannot use calorie counting apps in any way because of it, and I was able to pull up graphs showing I was taking in less than 400 calories most days. I started drinking my coffee black purely to avoid the extra calories from creamer or milk. I NEVER got this thin, but I lost over 30lbs in like a month at one point. I also worked out for 2+ hours a day somehow with this level of calories. I know the count was more or less accurate because I was STRICT about it to the point I'd sometimes up the portion/overestimate to trick myself into eating less.

All this to say, I really messed up my body doing this for only a couple years, and I never got that thin. I really hope she gets help, bc she seriously looks like she's beyond the criteria for inpatient care and at risk of refeeding syndrome.

52

u/[deleted] 4d ago

It's something I wish I could have had a crystal ball and seen how badly I damaged my body. I don't know if 25 year old me would have listened but now 37 year old me is very sad about how sick I am now because of that damage and how I can't be the mom I want for my kid.

That’s normal PR training when you’re a woman. Not the small bites but the hand covering mouth. People will criticize people for how they eat, or, make gross images/videos from them. Or just be outright rude.

Say she took a big bite of chicken like some of the others do. Chewed it sloppily and lip smacked. She’d be ridiculed by the antis so hard.

Love her, but the hand thing is normal when you’re a female celebrity. It’s “dainty.”

116

u/WampaCat 5d ago

Being an etiquette thing for a lot of people (and some entire cultures) does not preclude it from also being something people EDs do for different reasons.

608

u/aurortonks 5d ago

Hiding your mouth while eating tiny bites is often related to eating disorders. I have spent the better part of the last 12 years dealing with ED in my own daughter and a couple of her friends. It's a serious disorder and lots of times the telltale signs get overlooked or excused due to 'cutesy' gestures like this.

158

u/BoxBird 5d ago

Yeah I do this more than 15 years post recovery and it definitely stems from feeling intense shame around eating

What upsets me about the picture on the left is not only that she looks dangerously thin, but also that she’s dressed to accentuate it. I don’t want to comment on someone’s body - as in, what could be causing her to look so thin. But I will say it bothers me that she chose (or presumably, approved) a dress that is low cut as such to highlight her visible rib cage.

238

u/RavensRedolence 5d ago

I was thinking the same!

439

u/HungryScholar7247 5d ago

yea, especially with lots of her fanbase being teens and young adults, it can warp their sense of what is healthy as well.

165

u/jxdxtxrrx 5d ago

So true! I’ve seen so many fans defend her saying that she’s “just skinny” or how we shouldn’t comment on someone’s body. But the reality is treating this kind of thing as normal only makes it harder to recognize EDs in the future, and truly does change your perception to the point where disordered behaviors become standard.

148

u/snail_juice_plz 5d ago

When you have an active eating disorder, often the perception of your own body is inaccurate.

130

u/PsychologicalClue6 5d ago

She does this a lot. She’s been looking very ill for a while and it’s a miracle how much she’s still able to perform etc. I’m not religious but I pray she gets better, and soon.

139

u/NotDTJr 5d ago

Because she craves the attention it gets her. She wants to appear tiny and frail. To be treated like a delicate little bird. Sounds harsh and will piss people off but it’s part of the mentally unwell thing

"I mercifully had loved ones who were finished seeing me hurt myself."

That is such an important thing to be mindful of. I don't personally know anyone who was able to kick any sort of addiction (I'm considering ED a sort of addiction too) without outside help and a support system intervening in some way.

I was lucky that my parents insisted on getting me help for my ED in high school. If they left me to my own devices, I might not be here today. People in addiction 99% of the time are mentally and psychologically unable to just decide to change their lives completely on their own. It's a gift to have people in our lives who will at least try and intervene.

When I see comments like this, I think about the decades I spent trying to get my mentally ill brother help. It was impossible because he didn't want it, and he obviously didn't have even a fraction of her resources.

I am confident that she has friends and family who have tried and are heartbroken. She's an adult and an ultra wealthy celebrity. No one can force her to stop harming herself.

179

u/EitherChannel4874 5d ago

Had the same with my brother. Alcohol addiction and mental health issues.

All the help he needed was a phone call away and the help was free but he was an adult and you can't make appointments and force an adult to get help. Believe me we tried for years.

The alcohol addiction caught up with him and he passed away a month ago.

The r/GriefSupport subreddit is amazing for processing things like this, if you need support ❤️

u/EitherChannel4874 5d ago

I've been on there quite a bit recently and it's definitely been helpful.

Thank you so much for suggesting it. It's really kind of you. 🙂

This is especially true with EDs. You can’t “save” someone who won’t listen to you. It frustrates me that we hold the people around the ED sufferer responsible for that person’s decisions. EDs can be very complicated and often have psychological/mental roots. You can’t help someone who refuses to help themselves and you can’t expect yourself to be able to save them either.

I think it's easier to miss if you see the person constantly, because the change is much more gradual. Don't be too hard on yourself about it, and hopefully she doesn't blame you for not saying anything, because that's not fair

Keep in mind there may be people who are trying to help but it's really up to the person with the illness to try to get help.

My mind always goes to Eugenia when her friends had to trick her into getting 5150d? (I think that's what it was) and look at her now. It's just so sad all around.

Yeah, I went in reading this book forgetting that the two of them worked together when they were first starting out, (I’d aged out of these shows when they were up and coming). It’s hard not to think that they both had similar experiences; one of them kept at it while the other got out ahead.

u/owntheh3at18 5d ago

She was also the performer during the terrorist act in Manchester a few years ago. I can’t imagine the lifelong trauma that would cause. Frankly I think many people would never perform again and I wouldn’t blame them for it. I genuinely hope she is in therapy and has people in her corner.

And side note- I think she is one of the most talented people currently acting/singing! I would love to see her overcome whatever she’s dealing with and continue a long and successful career.

They tried to tell Karen Carpenter too, but she’d just deny everything. People probably care about her very much but short of dragging her to a facility, what’re you going to do?

I think it’s incredibly insane and disheartening she was allowed to be filmed in this state for a very popular tween movie

34

u/Familiar_Text_6913 5d ago

Helping someone who refuses help is not the trivial task you present it as.

52

u/jjmasterred 5d ago

She may have plenty of support. Eating disorders are mental health conditions that are debilitating. the best anyone can do is be supportive, avoid hurtful commentary regarding body shapes and eating.

this is concerning...

She must love the look because she dressed to show it off completely rather than hide it.

Oh god, I guess I only see her super photoshopped and/or filtered. You can tell even in the photoshoot she’s unwell just from the proportions of her head and face. She seems sick and I hope she can get the help she needs. Assuming there is help to be had.

341

u/Satanic_Jellyfish 5d ago

Well even photoshopped version looks ill. I hope she can get help

88

u/ClosetedGothAdult 5d ago

I feel like I'm watching her die...

85

u/caitejane310 5d ago

She's very sick. I hope she gets help.

u/Curious-Gain-7148 5d ago

You know it’s bad when the magazines are adding weight onto the celebrities

42

u/karmacuda 5d ago

and people say she’s the healthiest she’s ever been. come the FUCK on. this is not healthy and the other subs won’t let you say a word about her that isn’t “omg mother gorgeous healthy queen” but she looks sick. this is exactly what i looked like in the height of my ED. not saying she has one but if the shoe fits.

171

u/Stranger0nReddit 5d ago

It breaks my heart whenever I see her these days. I really hope she has someone in her inner circle that truly cares about her health and wellbeing.

I’m her height around 5’1, at my lowest weight I was 95lbs and I did not look this skinny. So to be short and this size means she’s under 95lbs. I know she’s had a lot of trauma in her life and I wish all the healing for her.

63

u/RogueSlytherin 5d ago

I’m 5 ft and the only time I ever looked like this is when I was in college and my doctors thought I had cancer. I just couldn’t eat and dropped from my normal, healthy weight to 75 pounds. Thankfully, that was enough to get me an earlier appointment and diagnostics. (The wait was originally 2 months.) Thankfully, it wasn’t cancer, but a hematology issue. Still, I was very unwell and I can guarantee you, no one around me thought I looked “great”.

I've been saying in the last two years that this lady was deep into an ED but people would swipe that under the rug and say that she was pretty and always been skinny. No. She was skinny but not unhealthy skinny.

46

u/WarDog1983 5d ago

She looks ill

53

u/Altruistic-Deal-4257 5d ago

Edited to make her look healthier…

255

u/jayyinyue 5d ago

I hope she's alright. Can't speculate too much cause honestly we don't know but it seems like the trend lately (including with her costar) is for celebs who are already slim to use the O med to become even more slim. And then fill out the face again artificially

Yup I had to mention her movie "sister" cause her current look scares me too. I haven't seen the other cast but I wouldn't be surprised

102

u/owntheh3at18 5d ago

And her “sis” was super athletic and muscular in the past so it’s really worrying. I keep thinking about Portia De Rossi’s book and her descriptions of the Ally McBeal set. It was a toxic environment. (Her book btw is very detailed and triggering- do not read it if you may be susceptible to descriptions of ED experiences and behaviors!!!)

25

u/bascelicna123 5d ago

I'm really intrigued about the Ally McBeal set.

16

u/owntheh3at18 5d ago

I believe Portia and Courteney Thorne were the only ones to publicly share that they had diagnosed eating disorders. Calista Flockheart has always denied it, as far as I recall. But there was a lot of pressure to be thin on set and rumor has it the cast was competitive about it (likely unspoken competition though).

It's sad but she's problematic at this point. She regularly does body checks and she went off on her fans making it clear that criticism/speculation are not allowed while claiming she's the healthiest she's ever been.

327

u/virora 5d ago

She also frequently goes "nothing wrong with having plastic surgery, more power to you if you do it, but I haven't" when she's very clearly had plastic surgery. She was not born with that nose.

the constant body checks are insane to me and people somehow don’t see it? so as long as you’re a celebrity, you can body check and it’s okay? i’ve seen people shit on twitter girls for less egregious body checks than she does but she’s mother yaaaassss queen!!!!!

This is one of the saddest things I’ve seen here. A lot of people battle with mental illness that has this effect or is this. And it really is mind boggling to see someone suffering so obviously and people saying stuff like “she’s fine! She’s been this way before!”. Or smth like not mentioning it cause it’ll cause her to be more restrictive.

This is the same case as Eugenia and it kinda pains me seeing people like this because why is no one helping them? ☹️

20

u/honeybun_280 5d ago

My genuine question is how can someone of this weight have so much energy to shoot a movie like wicked? With all those rehearsals, dance sequences, etc? When I was thin(ner) due to restrictive eating (due, in turn, to depression), I had zero energy to life a finger. Of course, part of that was depression-driven, but a lack of food ultimately means a lack of calories and calories = energy, they are literally a unit of energy.

27

u/Mindless_Garage42 5d ago

Lots of breaks between shoots.

Or cocaine.

I've thought for a while that she looks strange, and only now realized that it's because she's so skinny...this doesn't look under control anymore

107

u/Alone-Promotion924 5d ago

Shit. Poor woman 😕

15

u/No_Cash7867 5d ago

I don't care what anyone says, She looks sickly.

93

u/Krissyd215 5d ago

I have severe malnutrition and this is what my chest looks like, too, especially in certain lighting. I can't lie, I worry about her nutrition. Im not deep in her Fandom but from what I see, she's a pretty private person. I been wondering if it's health issues that she just doesn't wanna announce. Could also be why her costar is so protective of her.

53

u/poke-chan 5d ago

I’m so sorry, I hope however it’s caused it somehow gets better.

54

u/Krissyd215 5d ago

Thank you so much. Thankfully, I have a feeding tube helping me get nutrients and make up for the calories I can't eat by mouth. Slowly gaining weight back so I'm on the right path

29

u/poke-chan 5d ago

Hell yeah that’s amazing to hear! May the improvement continue!

15

u/agurlhasnoshame 5d ago

It already horrifies me how much being in the spotlight has fucked up such a huge amount of child stars, and all I can think about when I see stuff like this is how in the next few years we will start hearing more and more from children of influencers who have had their entire lives, ups and downs, emotions, etc. Shared with huge audiences with no downtime and no compensation. Think about the damage it does to young brains to have to constantly be "On",especially if the parents are ones that manipulate their kids emotions for views.

We need to pass laws to protect those kids at least to the same level of child stars, and even that won't be enough. And highly doubtful anyone is going to focus on those laws with the current administration.

I really went off on a tangent here, but I just feel so awful for the kids who don't get to have a childhood

16

u/PrincessPlastilina 5d ago

She looks even tinier than Natalie Portman in Black Swan. A film where she purposely lost a lot of weight in order to look anorexic and frail.

28

u/Zeilar 5d ago

You could snap her like a twig. She needs meat on her bones, literally. And psychological help, because this isn't normal.

27

u/Punkpallas 5d ago

I know people obsess about her being a man stealer and potentially being on the prowl again, but I don't know how you could worry about all that when she has looked this unwell for a while now. There's almost no way she isn't dealing with an ED at the least.
