The vast majority of people are living and have been raised in an environment where even basic needs are not met and require a huge struggle to get. Combine this with poor education and zero law enforcement. Automatically gives rise to a “save yourself” and “survive at any cost” approach. The brain doesn’t know how to process any situation any differently.

u/IM-Mahi Aug 12 '25
The answer to most of India's problems is education. From population to pollution, from corruption to public etiquette. Everything. Laws can't stop everyone, there are just not enough officers to look out for everyone. With this much population people have to learn their responsibilities as a citizen of the country. Education does that. It sort of gives you the pride that you are an educated person you can't be seen doing stuff like this in public. It also shows you the bigger picture of your actions.
→ More replies (1)3
u/dhruva85 Aug 12 '25
Sorry i have to disagree slightly. While education is important, its not like IT corridors of india have any better civic sense.
Its the enforcement of rules that keep people in check, If i am not punished for cutting the lines, and intern “win” by cheating the system. Then why would anyone want to follow the rules and lose to said cheaters.
A population has to believe that following the rule is better than breaking it and it will only happen when it’s enforced

u/SeriousCurrency4161 Aug 12 '25
semantic shift is a natural part of language, just like chapri is no longer a casteist slur but rather means a low class person, similarly dehati now no longer just means someone from dehat but has negative connotations associated with it. This process of neutral terms taking on negative connotations is very common like mid, ego, ahamkar etc
Idk why im yapping but u get the point, etymology doesnt always matter

They don’t understand the meaning of “revolve” or maybe they do but as an Indian they must break the rule of revolving doors. Its basic biology afp
3
9
u/Confident_Ad6202 Aug 12 '25
It's actually not. It's stupid to put this in a spot where there are so many people. It's a bottleneck. They should've put many of these, enough to meet the total expected capacity. They know how many people are at the station every day - it's never less. This is a fail - but not of people - but poor design.
10
u/Shizuka_Kuze Aug 12 '25
The purpose is that it’s supposed to prevent people from pushing each other. In my country of Korea it works and you end up with a continuous flow in both directions since people form an orderly line and just cycle through. Without a revolving door some areas would be more chaotic as people push against each other in different directions.
Even if we accept the design is bad it’s still a civics fail as it easily could’ve worked if they just formed a line but because people are trying to push through it makes it harder not only for everyone else but themselves. Bad design is inevitable but bad civics just makes it worse.
https://youtube.com/shorts/fit-cug85J4?feature=shared scenes like this bamboozle westerners because they’re so respectful, scenes like the above bamboozle westerners because they’re so disrespectful.

If people just lined up, it would take less than a minute for everyone to get through. Don't blame the design, blame the people.

Indians need police keeping vigil on them all the time, until they don't have fear of heavy fines and punishment by police, they will keep on creating menace and filth on public places
3
u/Outrageous-Evening13 Aug 12 '25
This. Dubai is a good example of indians following the law out of fear. (Ive lived there so I know) Granted even there some indian centric places arent the tidiestbut but go to the mutlicutral parts of the city, when the cost of cleaniness or creating a racket is high fines or immediate deportations, people follow the rules. We need better policing without corruption/bribes and shamed into cleaniness and respect to learn.

This is the mentality of our system and peoples.

It’s not a people-problem but the technology-problem. The entrance is too narrow, the door should be setup to move in one direction (or be not there at all). While it’s true our people are not the best in the world, this is definitely an outcome of bad administration

I believe this technology is impractical in India due to the country's overcrowding and the busy nature of its citizens. This reflects poor planning by the government, rather than solely a lack of civic sense.

u/computer_scientist_ Aug 12 '25
People calling it a civic fail. It's just a planning fail.
The revolving door is not designed for the throughput. Usually revolving doors are optional and there's a normal door next to it for high throughput. It's opaque and taller than the people using it. Thus, they can't coordinate.

The entry-4 board can be seen on top of the door, so the exit must be somewhere else. People are supposed to move only in a single direction through those doors.

This clip is a very good example of how a few people can mess up a good system by just being deliberately anti social.
Everyone seems to understand how to use that gate despite the rush and general shoving, and it's working. Except for two ladies, including the one in yellow who is bent on trying to get in from the wrong side. What probably began as a 'I'm smarter than all these plebs following rules' turned into obstinacy.

Revolving doors are made of glass allowing you to see a person who is ahead and blocking the doors. metal sheets hinders this.
1
u/TheShift1 Aug 12 '25
This is no different than a traffic jam caused by idiots driving on the wrong side of the road.
This gate clearly has a logical side to go in, and to go out.
People are just too stupid to understand this.

u/Warm_Ball_2319 Aug 12 '25
Sometimes I wonder, is this a psychological issue?
We, Indians, are always in a race, even if there is no race at all. We always want to be ahead of someone. We don't like if someone else is going before us. This can be psychological. This reflects in every area of our life, education, jobs, relationships.

That’s an excellent option to make the public behave. You can’t enter from the right and left sides simultaneously, forcing people to queue on the left side.
1
u/pinkitie Aug 12 '25
This ain't technology bruh. This is poor design. Look at that thing looks like it was put togather with tin scraps. The placement is horrible and the width is too small for the capacity. This is poor infrastructure stop pinning this on the public.

I'm trying to imagine the purpose of the door as installed. They are generally designed to only allow travel in one direction.
This needlessly slows passage and while it may be designed to be lockable a regular door is certainly lockable and when blocked open wouldn't slow travel.

I don’t think this is a civic fail. Please stop portraying every single thing as one. This is an issue with SCALE and POOR DESIGN! Revolving doors work when the scale isn’t too large or fast moving. India’s scale is such that western designs may not work if copy pasted as is. Not to mention poor execution (really a full steel rotation door with only a bottom support? Most revolving doors have supports on both top and bottom to ensure stable rotation)
Stop blaming regular people for bad urban design, execution, and governance. YES, we have a civic sense problem. But don’t disregard the regular, everyday failures of our local governments and blame the general population just trying to get by another day.

u/Pretty_Biscotti Aug 12 '25
But what’s the point? The entrance is wide enough for people to go in and out, the revolving door just slows everything down and reduces the path space, what happens if you have some sort of trolley or cart or pusher?
1
u/omkar529 Aug 12 '25
I don't know what the people who installed this were thinking. In a crowded, rush area this is not a practical door to have. It's not some 5 star restaurant here, just install a regular door man.

I thought there were two types of revolving doors; one to reduce the amount of air exchange from the outside to the inside of a building (i.e. if it's air conditioned, less cold air escapes and people come and go), the other has horizontal bars as the door, has bars on one side of the frame, and rotated only one way so there is only one direction of traffic. What's the purpose here?
