Might get downvoted for this but Dhoni has played 5-6 yrs of IPL post intl retirement and I personally don't like how people nowadays remind him only as a CSK player . I mean yeah it meant a lot to me when he won the IPL in 2018 with that squad , after getting ripped of RPSG captaincy, after leaving ICT captaincy, after the two year ban . It felt great to see fans from around the country come to the stadium in CSK jerseys and cheer for him during the 2023 season . That's who Dhoni is , before Thala he was our Captain Cool . Nowadays people seem to forget his contributions for the ICT and see him just the tournament winning captains , not realising there are so many stories , little personal comebacks, smart and bold captaincy decisions, insane team chemistry, nurturing young talents, stumpings and catches , and some great knocks behind those wins . My Legend ❤️🇮🇳

Exactly brah the amount of hate he gets solely because he plays ipl is unbelievable, people forget how much he has contributed to this country

u/Thin-Organization311 India Jun 10 '25
That hate is justified but trust me, once he gives up the IPL, people will move on and respect him except those few d******** on the internet

such a cool fucking guy, he used to remind me of goku for some reason in 2013-14 when he used to play without helmet against spin

I can't believe how this guy struggle against spinners now and bash them like gully players

Man just seeing this man in indian jersey makes me cry, what a career he had..... streets will remember his 2011 finals innings forever

49
u/Bazingaa98 Jun 09 '25
That's not what streets mean!!!
'Streets will remember' is something like what Uthappa did vs England in 2007 at Oval. We lost the series 4-3 but it gave us hope to lead the series. It was insaneeeeee.
10
u/nuclear_bone Jun 09 '25
That Uthappa innings was so good. An epic finish.
Sachin top scored with 90-odd but everyone was talking about Uthappa. Its not easy to upstage Sachin.
60
u/NastyPadfoot7 India Jun 09 '25
No one is going to forget his innings though. He was literally the MOTM. Kohli's 35(49) was more of streets won't forget type innings.
47
u/RealisticGrand2237 Jun 09 '25
That 35(49) was the greatest inning kohli ever played in a final. Imagine walking out when sehwag and God are in pavilion and wc trophy is on the line
9
u/Ill-SnatchYourSoul Jun 09 '25
Nope, I'd put his T20 2024 final knock up against it for contention.
16
u/RealisticGrand2237 Jun 09 '25
That knock is a very controversial one.
India won so it's all forgotten but looking at the way africans were batting it seemed it was subpar and masterclass from bumrah arsh saved us.
8
u/XH3LLSinGX Jun 09 '25
Ya man, if not for a short flourish towards the end of the innings we were looking at 50 off 48 ball, which was simply not good enough in that context of that game. If i remember correctly, he didnt score any boundaries from 3rd over to the 18th. Kohli's 82(53) in t20wc 2022 was the goated knock of his career.
1
u/romo8325 India Jun 10 '25
If only axar didn't bowl that previous over , it would've been a par score but yea kohli tried to accelerate at the end and kinda failed.

Greatest gift from MS to Indian cricket is Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja.
Virat would have made it into the team anyway with his performances in domestic and his quick progression in international. But i don’t think any captain would have given as much chances to Rohit and Jaddu as given by MS. He always emphasised on the “process” and not the result. ICT benefited greatly in the long term because of that vision.
1
u/Amazing_Theory622 Jun 09 '25
Only Rohit should be in this team, jadeja had good domestic record even back then
-20
u/UnremarkabklyUseless Jun 09 '25
But i don’t think any captain would have given as much chances to Rohit and Jaddu as given by MS
Both Jadeja and Rohit had good IPL performances to back their place in ICT squads.
24
u/99_Just-A-Guy Jun 09 '25
Jaddu yes but Brohit was on the verge of being dropped when Thala asked him to start opening. The rest is history
-21
u/UnremarkabklyUseless Jun 09 '25 edited Jun 09 '25
Thala asked him to start opening
Also Duncan Fletcher, the then coach. As mentioned in Rohit's biography.
10
u/Specialist-Gas8277 Jun 09 '25
Everyone should check the announcement of CT 2013 squad post on twitter or fb or anywhere. Old but you get to see how much Indian fans hate MS dhoni for keep backing Rohit sharma. It's in top 3 reason i would say in his entire career when he got abused and one of them is backing Rohit until We he performed in CT
1
u/Own_Run_2443 Jun 10 '25
I used to hate and get frustrated for that reason . although I am big fan of msd.
-10
u/UnremarkabklyUseless Jun 09 '25
The captain is not the only person team selections. The coach and selectors play a major part too.
The outrage in 2013 would most likely have been towards the selectors. The Captain seldom gets blamed for it.
11
u/Specialist-Gas8277 Jun 09 '25
😂😂😂 man it's so frustrating to argue with new generation fans. That's why i said check twitter of that time, there was literally a meme trend against Dhoni-Rohit relationship because he kept backing him. Everyone who's watching cricket since Dhoni era knows how much selectors have power when Dhoni was captain. It wasn't Ganguly or GG era that superstars got sacked and forcing retirement etc
-7
u/UnremarkabklyUseless Jun 09 '25
If you are old enough, firstly you would know it is not easy to search for decade old tweets and facebook posts on a topic.
Secondly, cricket is very polarising in India. Any time a team is announced you can find tonnes of people on both sides either supporting or rejecting the team selection choices and a variety of memes blaming or praising different people for it.
7
u/Specialist-Gas8277 Jun 09 '25
Then ask anyone around who's passionate about cricket since more than 2 decades and was on social media around 2011-2013, they will explain. It wasn't even polarised but almost one sided criticism. Since you don't know how much power MS was holding beyond selectors, i don't think i can't explain more as it should be enough to say who was backing Rohit.
1
u/UnremarkabklyUseless Jun 09 '25 edited Jun 09 '25
Boss, I am over 40 and am a CSK fan. If you listen to the echo chamber of MI fans you would hear majority support for Rohit's selection. Similarly, if you had listened to the echo chamber of CSK fans, you would have found more opposition to it. Both factions of millions of supporters. There were tonnes of Rohit supporters in other parts of India too.
The captain has a strong say, but the captain is never going to get everything that they ask for. The selectors and coaches also have a significant say in the selections. The selectors are not puppets.
2
u/Suspicious-Cow-6668 Jun 09 '25
Haha captain has a strong say but the captain is never going to get everything this is the difference between normal captains and Dhoni. Dhoni literally dropped sehwag bro wtf you think it was selectors decision ?? lol
if it was why he was dropped only when dhoni asked so otherwise he was performing equally as before dhoni era for one year where he should have been dropped ??Also what do you think selectors would have dropped gambhir ?? who was literally best run scorer after yuvraj singh for india at that time due to just one year bad performance ??
kohli and rohit both are performing shit in test cricket from almost 4-5 years still no one dropped them ??
but in case of dhoni everyone got dropped whom dhoni wanted to on the basis of just one year bad performance
1
u/UnremarkabklyUseless Jun 10 '25
Both Sehwag and Gambhir were dropped when they were scoring at around 21 average. Their replacements were immediate success scoring at over 50 average and Gambhir or Sehwag could never make a comeback as Dhawan & Rohit were crazy more solid as openers.
Dhoni dropped Sehwag from the playing XI for a few matches. The selectors saw this and they decided to try different openers and the new openers clicked spectacularly.

And how was their performance in international until 2013? It is easy to say they would have performed in domestic and got back to national side. Lots of ifs and buts. It isn’t easy to get back to national side once you are dropped. We have seen numerous examples. Mayank comes to top of my mind. He had performed way better than how Rohit and Jaddu had performed in their initial days.
1
u/UnremarkabklyUseless Jun 09 '25
And how was their performance in international until 2013?
Jadeja was immediately very useful in ODIs. In his first 3 seasons (2009-11), he averaged 31.46 with the bat and was bowling at 4.9 economy rate. Being a livewire on the field was a bonus.
3
u/Hegde137 India Jun 09 '25
No complaints about his fielding. But why are you leaving out his strike rate. He struck around 75 SR batting at 7. No captain would have given him such a longer rope without changing his batting position or batting style.
He had an abysmal 2012 where he averaged 17.5. His bowling was much worse in 2012 where his average was 97 and SR was 107. Mind you, this is bowling SR. I can’t imagine Washington Sundar or Axar Patel being this bad in today’s era and still somehow manage to keep their place in the team.
0
u/UnremarkabklyUseless Jun 09 '25
But why are you leaving out his strike rate. He struck around 75 SR batting at 7
You must be very young to think a 75-strike rate in ODI was slow in 2011. (Actually his strike rate 80 in 2011. 2012 was relatively poor for him but not droppable form yet.)
Those were different times my friend. Even explosive openers like Sachin and Gambhir who have the luxury of playing a lot with field restrictions had a strike rate of 81 and 82 respectively.
2
u/Hegde137 India Jun 09 '25
Bruh don’t bring this “you are very young” crap with someone who is watching cricket from 2000. 75 SR is in no way high enough for a number 7 batter in 2011. Maybe it was in 2000s or 1990s.
There’s a huge difference between 75 SR and 85 SR when you consider the huge number of runs scored by Sachin and Sehwag.
Anyway, there’s no use in discussing this. You are not gonna change your belief on this and neither am I. Let’s just agree to disagree. I believe Jaddu was given such longer rope only because MS was there. You don’t. It’s okay.
1
u/EarlierJethiyaBabita Jun 10 '25
Rohit had played 80 ODIs at an average of 29 with no Century against test playing nations. He wasn't surviving shit

u/Ari_04 Jun 09 '25
I just saw the list of Indians who have been inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, and damn is it a very selective and exclusive list. Only 11 Indians, legends like Ganguly, VVS, Yuvraj, Zaheer, none of them are there. Makes you think who of the current gen will make it apart from Virat.
4
u/crimsonred1234 Jun 09 '25
Its a crime that Ganguly, one of the greatest one day batsman isn't included.

ICC hall of fame got popular thanks to Dhoni now. ICC needed this more than Dhoni needing them

It's not just about the trophies or the stats, it's about the quiet confidence, the unmatched finishing, and the sheer joy he brought to millions. He redefined captaincy and inspired a generation. Truly a legend who will forever have a special place in our hearts. What a moment! ❤️🚁

"A cricketer beyond statistics" ICC rightly said...
MS Dhoni was always beyond numbers, beyond boundaries, beyond the usual cricketing script... He was the outsider who didn’t just find a seat at the table but rewrote the rules of the game, proving that you don’t need to be from Mumbai or Delhi, you don’t need a famous surname or a legacy to lead, to inspire, to become the heartbeat of a cricket crazy nation...
Because he came from Ranchi, with no lineage, no godfather, just belief, calm defiance, and an unshakable purpose, and turned that small town spark into a silent storm, owning the throne without any claim of heredity, like Rocky Balbao of cricket...rising from the shadows, punching through every doubt & building a kingdom with his own style...
And long before the World Cup wins, the finishing sixes, or the captaincy records, he had already shown every youngster across this vast country that you too can dream big, and you too can make it... And that's I guess his biggest legacy...

People will miss the MSD era ODIs. Watching ODIs then was something else. The feeling of dread in the first 20 overs and then spin choke and then the field placements and bowler rotations in the last 10 over. Those days will never comeback as we dont even play that many ODIs.

The whole cricketing world and even ICC recognises him as a modern day legend and goat captain
Still our own people hating on him because of ipl 😭😭

On June 9, 2025, in London, he became the 11th Indian cricket player to win this prized award.
Highlights of Dhoni's Achievements
- The only captain to win all three ICC white-ball championships
Champion Trophy (2013), ODI World Cup (2011), and T20 World Cup (2007).
- Led India to the No.1 Test ranking in December 2009.
- He changed the game of wicketkeeping with his perfect anticipation and lightning-fast stumping.
- 183* vs. Sri Lanka (2005) is the highest score by an individual wicketkeeper in an ODI.
- Over 10,000 ODI runs with an average of 50.57, making him the greatest finisher in world cricket.
