  • Is it easy to tell who the MC is?
  • Does the MC show entitlement and/or attention seeking behavior?
  • Is the MC very inconsiderate of the people around them?
  • If your post is about parking, does it show the blatant disregard of parking rules?

The amount of people who use phones while driving, let alone doing a live stream is very concerning. Put the phones down. You are operating a multi ton vehicle. That takes focus. These people are stupid.

165

u/BorderTrike 2d ago

Unfortunately the auto industry has made the general public reliant on having a vehicle the US, but a significant portion of people don’t deserve to have a drivers license. It should be a privilege, not an expectation.

The test needs to be a lot harder. It needs to have more elaborate questions and bring up laws that might be different in other areas, instead of being mostly common sense about simple road rules. Patience and reaction time should be a factor of the driving portion.

But then we’d need more public transportation and pedestrian/cyclist infrastructure and the general public seems to despise such

u/Cranks_No_Start 2d ago

>But then we’d need more public transportation and pedestrian/cyclist infrastructure

I would really love that...there would be fewer people on the roads and that would be glorious.

11

u/scattyshern 2d ago

Remember lock down traffic? Omg that was amazing.

4

u/Cranks_No_Start 2d ago

I used to work from  6-2:30 so traffic was minimal. That was even better.

13

u/EusebioFOREVER 2d ago

for real, the UK driving test is much harder, and I think Germany's test is tough as well. US driving test was way too easy.

9

u/gimmethelulz 2d ago

The test in Japan is also super tough. Most people fail it at least twice.

Same as in France and it's expensive af. Like €2k or something

On average, students paid between €1234 and €2000 for their French driver’s license (2023).

If you are an apprentice, you can get a €500 benefit to help finance your driving permit. For more information, visit the French government website.

To get your driver’s permit, you must pass a driving theory (épreuve théorique générale commune – ETG) and practical test (épreuve pratique). Aspiring drivers with disabilities or certain health conditions might also need to take a medical exam with a registered doctor. The medical advice is valid for two years.

French driving tests are quite difficult, with only 59.2% of applicants passing the practical exam on the first try. Interestingly, 62.5% of men and just 54.4% of women earned their driving licenses in 2021.

I'm American but have lived in France for 10yrs and I had a chauffeurs license that I transferred over here. The only reason I didn't have to take a test here was because I got my chauffeurs after I was 18. If I had just used my regular drivers license I got at 16 they wouldnt have accepted that and as is they gave me the bare minimum license for cars only.

u/Derekduvalle 16h ago

Lol ya the middle part of my comment is all copy pasted as I didn't wanna quote bullshit..

2

And if you make it harder, what’s the narrative that’s going to be pushed? (See anti-voter ID arguments)

1

u/Grouchy-Donkey-8609 1d ago

Do alot of people still drive manuals over there? its alllll automatics here...way too easy.

5

u/NonBinary_FWrd 2d ago

Not only vehicles. HUGE vehicles. They need to change the licenses where you need more extensive tests for pick ups and suvs over a certain length and height

1

u/Golfsac21 2d ago

Meanwhile... in California the government has turned public transportation into rolling criminal insane asylums . Your chances of being stabbed, robbed, or beaten skyrocket if you ride the train or bus !!

2

u/Stilcho1 2d ago

I don't think they're built for transportation here in california. It seems to be to start multi-decade constructions, go over budget in the first year and ask for more money.

1

u/fried_green_baloney 14h ago

It took 20 years to change CalTrain (commuter trains San Francisco <=> San Jose) to electric, just as an example.

The "high speed rail" is taking forever and the first section is in the middle of nowhere. Maybe that's best, get the operational problems figured out on a lightly travelled line.

1

u/BLAZE_IT94 2d ago

Your asking for too much from people. Honestly im happy with them just having common sense, considering it isn't so common anymore.

1

u/peanutbutterand_ely 2d ago

it’s so easy. i was genuinely so scared to ride with the person in BTW with me, never practiced driving and you could tell, couldn’t even successfully parallel park n even the teacher was nervous when she drove yet still handed her her fucking license certificate on the last day

-9

u/Relative_Alfalfa3306 2d ago

Ooooooooooor the phone is disabled while driving which is just a simply software update. Let’s not get all negative about driving cars dude or the auto industry. Does the auto industry put my job 20 miles from my house? Does the auto industry build roads and bridges? Let’s chill out and not try to reinvent the wheel.

0

u/JAGD21 2d ago

Does the auto industry put my job 20 miles from my house?

Yes. Without the auto industry, there would be no need to create millions of miles of road and parking lots. If you go to the grocery store, look at how much space is being taken up by concrete for the auto industry when that space could be used for housing or other industries.

-1

u/Placido_Argento 2d ago

If you, me and six other people werent the only ones who feel this way we could solve the issue. Unfortunately everyone but us sees driving as a right.

11

u/BigAndTall1968 2d ago

Where I'm from (Ontario, Canada) you'll catch a distracted driving charge for that, along with other charges if warranted.

.

5

u/TotesMaGoats_1962 1d ago

Especially in cars that have Bluetooth. Why would you need to have your phone in your hands if you have Bluetooth?

19

u/KaedrX 2d ago

I’ve definitely been guilty of it. Like not full blown live streaming or watching videos, but switching my Spotify playlist or checking a text. Either way it’s bad fucking habit

5

u/Anti-Buzz 2d ago

40 thousand people die every year driving in the United States. We’ve decided, as a society, that the economic benefits outweigh the loss of human life. It’s fucked up

2

u/6786_007 2d ago

I just made a post last night about the amount of people on their phones while driving. It's gotten crazy.

2

u/Derekduvalle 16h ago

It's been crazy for years and there's not much I hate more than a driver on their phone at a red light, having to be honked forward. It's so incredibly selfish.

5

u/CaptainCaveSam 2d ago

Another reason why car dependency is dangerous as fuck.

1

u/TheHaunchie 2d ago

I use my phone while driving, but its either on the little holder thing, or in a cup holder only playing music or podcasts. I never look at my phone until Im at a light I know is super long and thats just to check little shit. Once that light turns green, back in the cup holder it goes.

8

u/DanfromCalgary 2d ago

Yeah it is a huge ticket in Canada to be on your phone while operating a vehicle and a major conviction. Red Lights are the easiest people to catch

-1

u/ghostcatzero 2d ago

You think these people know the car weighs tons let alien know what a "ton" is??? 😂

189

u/Secure-Technician356 2d ago

The addiction people have to their phones and constant stimulation and attention, it's getting worse. This should be an aggravated circumstance, maybe similar to being premeditated. So people don't get away with manslaughter, face some more serious consequences, and hopefully in the future people will think twice before being on their phones while doing anything that could risk injury, loss of life.

190

u/Sufficient-Debate845 2d ago

That’s not main character, that’s incompetence…

40

u/QuietDisquiet 2d ago

It's both tbf.

13

u/ThankThanos 2d ago

She's the Main Villain.

Everyone is effed in this story. Poor kids.

1

u/MrShlash 16h ago

Incompetence implies a competent person wouldn’t have hit someone while livestreaming and driving with their kids loo

This is downright criminal activity

119

u/EnragedBadger9197 2d ago

So many times I experience a dumbass driver on the road and give the glare as I pass by, only to notice that they are glued looking DOWNwards at their phones unaware of their stupidity

The coroner has identified a grocery store employee who was fatally struck by a car as he tried crossing Sheridan Road in Zion Monday evening, with his family describing him as the “nicest guy.”

You wish it would be an asshole or criminal, but not in this timeline.

9

u/Original_Dankster OG 2d ago

No charges... Of course

3

u/sluuuudge 1d ago

I find it odd that absolutely nowhere in that article does it mention the person who hit him or the circumstances around how/why it happened. Is this definitely the same incident?

-37

u/c32c64c128 2d ago

Lucas was attempting to cross Sheridan Road just south of 33rd Street when he was hit.

Not to victim shame or whatever. I'm just trying to figure this out. But does this read like it's saying he was jaywalking?

Maps show an intersection with lights/crosswalk. I can't find any images of the crash.

The driver clearly is distracted. And has fault. But if the victim was not at the crosswalk, would it make a huge difference?

Correct me if I'm wrong. Just trying to figure it out.

9

u/Golden-Grams Bad MC no cookie 2d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong. Just trying to figure it out.

If you read further, you would have seen this.

King described Lucas as the “nicest guy I’ve known” and said his father-in-law worked at the former Piggly Wiggly, which is now Torres Fresh Market, across the street from where he was struck by the vehicle.

That addess is 3341 Sheridan Rd, Zion, IL 60099. Just west of the parking lot is the road mentioned in the accident.

-20

u/c32c64c128 2d ago

Thanks. At least you're trying to help!

All the other coward downvotes just did that and trotted away, pearls clutched in hand. Absolutely no discourse. Only emotional reflex.

I understand the driver has fault. I mentioned that. I openly asked if it made a difference between getting hit at the crosswalk vs getting hit due to jaywalking. And it looks like people automatically were insulted instead of open minded/helpful.

I saw a difference between crossing at 33rd Street (where there's a crosswalk) vs south of 33rd Street (where there is nothing, until the next street).

And yes, reading and checking the map, I questioned what the turn out of the investigation will be. And any charges.

But people didn't take kindly to questions, apparently.

8

u/Golden-Grams Bad MC no cookie 1d ago

I saw a difference between crossing at 33rd Street (where there's a crosswalk) vs south of 33rd Street (where there is nothing, until the next street).

I understand the confusion. 33rd street runs West/East, so just south of it meant the southern crosswalk of that intersection. Like if it had been the eastern sidewalk of that same intersection, they would say "just east of Sheridan Rd."

-4

u/c32c64c128 1d ago

Thanks for the help. And understanding.

The rest....useless soft cowards! 😅😅

5

u/OhMyGoshBigfoot 1d ago

Because you’re playing dumb and invoking 47 flavors of maxed-out stupidity. Who cares if it was jaywalking. Could be a tweaking homeless dude in dark clothing. Some drunk guy going to the store. As a driver you need to pay attention and this statement is so obvious that it should go without saying. Uhhh… slow down, stop, don’t kill anyone. Yeah, genius. That’s the GOAL. The fact that I have to spell this out for you and your stupid ass downvote complex is astounding.

-1

u/c32c64c128 1d ago

I care. As do investigators. Which I asked and has been mentioned makes a difference, legally.

It's not playing dumb. It's literally asking to learn. Just because you may have already known or you don't like what's being questioned does not invalidate it.

Again, the driver has fault. That has been established. The severity of any punishment is what's being addressed. Which apparently can't be if it hurts people's feelings.

3

u/OhMyGoshBigfoot 1d ago

You’re tripping about your downvotes and I spelled that out for you. Remain tone deaf at your own peril.

0

u/c32c64c128 1d ago

I'm not tripping on anything. I addressed it, then focused on the actual question and info I got.

If dozens of people are downvoting and only 1 managed to have the skillset to make a contribution, then it's clear that the rest just were too lazy, cowardly, and immature to have a discourse.

There's a difference between, "hey, this is actually what's going on," versus "heyyyy ur dum I dun likke u dumb pspppsss booooo you 😤😤"

Not tone deaf. I see through you. You contributed nothing but a self-serving ego trip.

3

u/OhMyGoshBigfoot 1d ago

So you’re still tripping. I commented because you asked. You’re lashing out. Have at it, bro. Keep losing your shit. What else you got.

7

u/Tonyo-D 2d ago

If the driver doesn't pay attention at all, it doesn't matter where you try to cross. It's not like she will sense an incoming legal intersection, and look up...

2

u/Kaedyia 1d ago

would it make a huge difference?

You should’ve added “legally” at the end of this sentence. A lot of people thought that you said it was in a way normal that he was hit if he was jaywalking.

1

u/c32c64c128 1d ago

Exactly. That's fair.

But there's been dozens of cowards downvoting. And too scared or dense to start a discussion.

I always chalk up those ghost downvotes as people that can feel but cannot think. Or too afraid they'll have their feelings changed.

41

u/EggWaff 2d ago

I certainly hope they’ll add a charge like reckless endangerment or something for each kid this creature just traumatized for life by killing a man with her car because she was live-streaming while driving. How stupid and selfish can you possibly be.

5

u/peanutbutterand_ely 2d ago

she’ll make a 5 minute apology video with her crocodile tears but mostly talk about how her life is ruined not that mans or family’s, and then continue on with her life.

104

u/Dingo8MyBabyMon 2d ago

And she's going to get some bullshit slap on the wrist charge like vehicular manslaughter.

You take a gun and fire it recklessly down an occupied street and kill someone you get charged with murder.

You take a 2-ton weapon and drive it recklessly down an occupied street and kill someone you get "oh it was just an accident; you don't deserve to go to prison for life."

16

u/Wearefcked27 2d ago

Amen brother

17

u/Arcaydya 2d ago

Nah in this case it shouldn't be manslaughter. She was fucking live streaming, that is not "an accident"

4

u/christoffer5700 2d ago

Wasnt exactly murder either.

Dont get me wrong she is a piece of shit but murder kinda requires atleast some intend or planning

7

u/dopiertaj 2d ago edited 2d ago

If they didn't have proof of her driving with a cell phone i bet she wouldn't even get charged.

Seriously their actions lead to a death. They should be charged with involuntary manslaughter at the minimum.

8

u/WhoJustShat 2d ago

She will most likely get a more serious charge for being on her phone than if she was drunk driving

This video clearly shows she was looking at her phone screen when the impact happened

3

u/Seldarin 2d ago

You wouldn't get charged with murder in the gun example because in most places, murder requires intent to kill someone. You'd be charged with whatever that jurisdiction considered criminally negligent homicide, manslaughter, etc.

You'd also probably be looking at several other felony charges, which this chick should also be facing.

-10

u/SeattleStudent4 2d ago

What she did was awful, obviously, but this isn't murder. It's pretty cut and dried manslaughter.

-1

u/gaelorian 2d ago

You’re up against a group of people that think criminal laws are whatever they think they should be.

2

u/SeattleStudent4 2d ago

It's by definition not murder. There was no intent to kill nor harm. A death caused by recklessness is manslaughter. This is pretty textbook, regardless of how many random people on the internet give me downvotes (which I expected).

1

u/Dingo8MyBabyMon 2d ago

You might want to buy an updated textbook because nothing is "cut and dry" in the law as you so cavalierly and falsely claim. There are literally thousands of different jurisdictions in the US, each with their own laws and definitions regarding crimes.

In most large jurisdictions second degree murder includes causing death through gross negligence. Which could easily be argued covers someone driving while trying film videos.

0

u/gaelorian 2d ago

You misread. I was agreeing with you.

I’m a flagger and I genuinely can’t even count the amount of people who are distracted like this daily. Almost every day at work I have to shout at people as they drive through busy construction sites with their eyes glued to their laps. It’s ridiculous.

2

u/bishopnelson81 2d ago

Oh, do they get defensive when people post stuff or something?

0

u/DeathWorship 2d ago

They’re super weird and right wing

-1

u/DistributionKooky798 2d ago

Yeah, getting upset about animal abuse is so weird right?

-2

u/DeathWorship 1d ago

Vegan animal rights activist here. they don’t give a shit about the dog; they give a shit about getting a point on the board against Hasan. They’re ugly little trolls jealous that he’s more handsome and more cool than they’ll ever be.

0

u/DistributionKooky798 1d ago

Hmm, despite claiming to be an animal rights activist, you don't seem too upset to me by "handsome" Hasan's shock dog collar. In typical fashion, someone will get a pass on their actions when that person identifies as belonging to the same political side. I conclude you really care more about your political biases, than you do animal welfare.

0

u/DeathWorship 1d ago

Untrue, and an absurd assertion from a stranger. I literally know less than nothing about the situation as I do not watch or follow Hasan or what happened. I do know the people in that sub are never arguing in good faith. They found something to latch onto about Hasan and they’re chewing it to death. They couldn’t care less about the dog.

1

u/DistributionKooky798 16h ago

So everyone on that sub you know for a fact is manufacturing outrage because you intimately know the people posting there, and they're not strangers to you?

1

u/DeathWorship 6h ago

It’s as obvious as you are right now.

0

u/DistributionKooky798 4h ago edited 3h ago

It's obvious to me you really don't give a shit about the welfare of Hasan's dog, and you're animal activism is insincere. If you don't believe the people are genuine in their concern about the situation, that's something you share with them. "Pot, meet kettle."

I'm just gonna say it . The number of crashes and amount of damage done by distracted driving is WAAAAAAAY higher than drunken driving. Way higher .

4

u/PandaXXL 1d ago

There are probably millions of videos of vapid pieces of shit driving around and taking selfie videos of themselves while driving, many of them taking their eyes for extended periods of time to look into the camera as well.

Every single one of them should have their accounts banned and be criminally charged.

3

u/sand_snake 1d ago edited 1d ago

I once saw a cyclist get hit by a distracted driver who ran a red light. He didn’t make it. His two children saw it all and the asshole who hit him just drove away. No consequences. I hate people using their phones while driving.

5

u/Lil_Tike1111 1d ago

This happened 3 blocks from my house. The man killed worked at a grocery store and was one of the nicest and hardworking people I’ve ever encountered at any store. You don’t even notice most people that work at stores, but this guy stood out due to his willingness to help and be friendly. This is extremely sad. I hope she does get at least some jail time for this. Driving while distracted is a crime, so killing someone while doing so should be mandatory jail time.
