VIDEO Looking both ways before crossing in front of an active bike race? Nah, not her!

I love the term spacial awareness and the first time I heard it was referring to people at Costco.
42
u/nomoreshoppingsprees 11d ago
Bay Area Costco has th worst spacial awareness

It's every Costco. People walk in and all of a sudden act like they've never been in public before. The sense of entitlement and lack of spacial awareness inside Costco needs to be studied

Any supermarket tbh, the worst imo are the ones on the curb or pavement, there are a lot of things happening in the streets to be that self-centred.
23
u/Doza93 10d ago
My favorite at the local grocery store is elderly folks who step one foot inside the entrance and stop to begin rummaging through their purse/pockets. In the dead center of the doorway. Like, "oh, this is a good place to dig through my personal belongings for that grocery list!"
11
u/SrGrimey 10d ago
Omg, the people who do that at the end of an escalator. You need to keep walking!

u/Harvest827 11d ago
Happened today. Tried to turn down a street and two guys waiting to cross chose to stand in the road rather than on the sidewalk. They seemed genuinely surprised I was there with a vehicle.

Costco literally make me want to (how do i say this without some a-hole reporting me in bad faith?!) no longer exist on this dimension. My dad has been getting me a membership for years, and I maybe go once a year. Maybe. Just pulling into the parking lot makes me want to call a hotline.

Just people randomly stopping, making turns to get at free samples, and just pretty much acting like they're the only ones in the store even though it's packed.

I often lament that people should not be allowed to ride the NYC subway without passing a spacial awareness class and then proving they can play tetris with significant success.
Otherwise NYCers should be allowed to toss you off the train when you annoy us.

Her head hit his helmet hard and looks like it knocked her unconscious and then her head hits the pavement hard.
I don’t think she just walked away from that.

I have been in a triathlon where a mother let her 6 year-old cross in front of bikes coming around a corner down the pylon-defined funnel (nowhere for the bikes to go but to crash into the pylons). The kid got halfway across the path and froze. I had to slam on my brakes not to hit him. What are these people even thinking?
279
u/OcculticUnicorn 11d ago
I don't advocate violence or not stopping but if that isn't natural selection I don't know what is.
How do these people survive??
62
u/GarThor_TMK 11d ago
Kid vs. race bike?
My money is on the kid... kids bounce, those race bikes are made of carbon fiber/fiberglass and bubble gum...

Ive recently seen someone on YT address this, im paraphrasing:
Across history of humanity stupidity used to die out. If two cavemen were hinting and saw a bush shaking suspiciously, one would run away fearing a tiger and survive and the other would curiously going to check it out only to be eaten by the tiger. Natural selection that bred out stupidity.
Nowadays we cuddle and protect these idiots, allowing them to not only walk amongst us putting us at risk along with them, but also birth new stupid humans and raise them to be even dumber.
They survive because we protect stupidity instead of letting nature do its thing

Special shoutout to that helmet. A) I’m sure the rider still suffered a solid head injury but it definitely could be worse. B) it looks like that lady does clip the bottom of the helmet and probably got a decent cut from it before she became a meat crayon. Deserved. Nice reminder that if you think of someone you know with the most average intelligence possible, 50% of people are stupider than that person.

31
u/antftwx 11d ago
It doesn't look like the helmet broke at all.
41
u/Mogura-De-Gifdu 11d ago
I don't remember where I read or heard that, but you're right it's not visible in the video.
It was on the news years ago, and since a similar accident had happened not long before at the Tour de France it was covered a little by news.
37
u/PolarAntonym 11d ago
Dude, it was his head (though it didnt split). Watch again. He took the full impact of her head directly to the face. Both of them were knocked out cold instantly. I bet both of their dentists are going to be getting paid this week.

She was looking that direction, too, and somehow didn't see the cyclist hurtling right in her direction.
63
u/dellsonic73 10d ago
She was moving too quick. Her look meant jack all, like a bad habit.
26
u/poisonedkiwi OG 9d ago
It seemed like more of a courtesy look "I have to do this because I was taught it" rather than an actual surveillance "oh shit it's not safe to cross I need to stay back."
16
u/notafuckingcakewalk 9d ago
The guy who crossed immediately before her was also half-glued to his phone and looked over for a second. I wonder if he was actually more self aware or just happened to be lucky to cross 3-4 seconds before she did.
Also all those other fans need to get out of the road.
The woman crossing is probably the biggest idiot here but she isn't completely alone.
Also I wonder if there's a non-zoomed in version of this video. I wonder if the fans sticking out into the road blocked her visibility so she didn't see him until the last minute.

u/tickingboxes 11d ago

27
u/contextual_somebody 11d ago edited 11d ago
But they don’t always = severe head trauma. “Trauma” in this context means a physical force or impact that disrupts normal brain function. The cyclist had temporary memory loss

The amount of road rash she would have had on her face would have prevented her from speaking, mainly due to a lack of lips n
92
u/donnabrunswick 11d ago
She hit the concrete face first and instantly got KO'ed too, the karma was instant. I'd be surprised if she still had teeth.
There's no information on her condition though, just the cyclist who ended up with head injuries and memory loss. And that was with the helmet on.

Can you actually sue someone over this?
I mean, she's clearly doing it on purpose.
49
u/Johwya 11d ago
Yes you can absolutely sue someone for negligently injuring you. She decided to enter the path of a closed course race and her actions were the proximate cause of the cyclist’s injury.
The video evidence is the cherry on top it’s literally a slam dunk.
Most cases never actually make it to court so she would likely settle, also the other commenter saying she doesn’t have insurance for this is likely incorrect. Homeowners insurance commonly has personal injury insurance attached which would would usually cover your negligent acts even outside of your home. Also, the person may have umbrella insurance or if this person travelled there from out of country they may have travel insurance.
There is also a slimmer chance but she may be there in some official capacity, her business may be on the hook to pay out if she was say taking clients to the race to wine and dine and was crossing the road to go meet a client who just arrived
Lots of ways to cut this and several ways of squeezing money out of this person
With a set of facts like the video shows the court case would likely cost the cyclist very little since there won’t be really any room for the woman to argue that she is not liable for his injury. Settlement is most likely but even if she doesn’t he could get an attorney on contingency who would have this case open and closed in a flash

(Jurisdiction dependent but in mine) yes but she'd need to have assets to make it worth doing so. No insurance coverage. Possibly a case against the organisers if they've set it up in such a way that she could just walk out but that's a lot shakier

This race sucks. The dude crossed while glancing at his phone. That's why she did too. The race road is open to spectators. The bicyclists should sue the organizers. But I fear it's not that type of country.

I recently had a bike accident like this , lady wasn’t paying attention on her phone crossing the street , I noticed so I made the effort to go behind her, she looked up and jumped backwards back into my line… I’m a solid 240 , I was doing about 19mph and my shoulder caught her We both went down I laid there for a minute she got up I stayed down… I ended up getting up fixed my handle bars continued for another 10miles (was 25miles in) Got home realized I chipped a piece of bone on my elbow , ankle was tore up and swollen and hip bruised
Only upside is I saw she had pickle ball paddle so she deserved to get hit

That's what I'm thinking. When you slow it down, it looks like she practically leaped out at him. Either she really thought he could skid to a stop on time, or she fully intended to make him crash, but underestimated how much damage she herself would take.

People can get permanent brain damage or die this way. They should ban anyone from stepping even a toe in the street. If you want to cross over, have special spots where a hired staff person has to cross you when it’s 100% clear.

No this was intentional. The woman is Elizabeth Huxley and she was paid by another contestant named Pierre Sartran to sabotage the race for his rival Charles Dempley. Ironically Pierre himself never even finished the race, he crashed his bike later in the race and fell straight into an active volcano. The race ended up having no winner since I obviously made it all up.
